He has left us a man and father a sacred feeling and example of a pure righteous parent.
Our dear mother who benefited of his aid but strengtened by his grand principles survived many years and with each that love for us given to when no one knows but the “Father that knows all.” Her thoughts were all for us. Her happiest days were when one or all of us visited the old homestead which she often suggested she would divide and make us each a home near her.
A yearly reunion of the Hanes family many years before their demise would have been the greatest of happiness for them and now sad with regrets but knowing their spirits are with us meet with Clara and Eston at our beloved old house August 15, 1924 and renew the bonds of our brotherly love and revere the memory of our dear beloved parents.
This becomes and organization, a secy being elected and place of meeting selected at each meeting for year.
Ella Harding elected secy. The old home with Clara and Eston (McCague) place of meeting for 1925.
Those Present: Clara and Eston; Alt and Metta; Cam and Ida; Metta; Carl; Sarah and Chas.; David
Among the first comers were Paul and Hazel Vane, by auto, from Lansing. Charles and Sarah and Chas. Jr., Cameron and Ida, by Auto, from Chicago.
With their good help, Clara and Eston and Carl had everything ready when the rest arrived.
The Gardners turned in early Saturday evening. The Wagners bringing
John, Irene, and Bobby with them Sunday morning about 10:00 and followed
by William and Tommy Haines before noon – Eston then drove to Waterloo
and brought Alt and the children – which completed the circle.
Then came the dinner--The table was stretched the full length of the kitchen and if it could have groaned under the weight of all the "goodies", as ordinary tables do, it would have let out a noise similar to our new deflector just installed by the government at all lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Everything that could be cooked, boiled, baked, or fried, greens, pastry, pickles, salad, suey and sandwiches, coffee, cake, and cream--everything--if any thing was omitted not one of the party, has noticed it yet. Each one took his plate and helped himself and then found a nice spot in the house on the porch or in the yard to sit down and "feast". After all were filled the table was left but not emptied and visiting and music was the next thing in order-cousin Hattie and David Aldrich came for a short visit and brought their daughter Mary and little girls - These little misses sang several songs in real concert style - Two autos took the young folks to Hamilton Lake for a swim - and brought Mary Hanes back with them--While the young folks were gone the rest of the folks drove down to the cemetery and visited the graves of our loved departed.--At four o'clock all reported, and it was decided to hold the next reunion at Sarah's in Chicago, and she was chosen secretary also. For the next meeting the cooks decided that each family should bring just what they wanted for their selves - and an exchange, trade, or swapping of eats could be done at the dinner. Hazel & Paul were the first to leave - but were not gone long before the Wagners and Gardners left for their trip home. -
Cameron and Ida drove back in their new Studebaker the next day (Mon.) Chas. and Sarah and Chas. Jr. stayed a few days at the farm before going on to New York where they spent a week sightseeing - Alt's folks were taken home by auto - and thus ended the big day.--All those on their way home feeling happier for the privilege of having fulfilled one request of our dear Parents--"that we may have many happy reunions at the dear old home." Ella Gardner. Sec.

Relatives from out of town arrived Sat. the 15th. Carl from Butler, Alt, Metta, and Theron went to Goshen Ind. by train - from there - with Metta and Carl Wagner by auto. - David, Ella, Dorothy, and Marcella by train from Wisconsin. We all visited from one place to another Sun. Those that had an auto took the crowd out sightseeing. On Mon. the dinner was served at the Pier. - Ida had taken much care in selecting a good location for our little party. At 2:30 PM everything was ready - Our tables were beautifully arranged before the open windows - While eating, could watch the beautiful lake with excursions coming and going with their merry crowd of cheer and laughter. Also music from the merry go round was delightful. Alt led us in prayer - We then undertook to do ourselves justice. The table was loaded with all kinds of cakes, salads, pies, cookies, sandwiches, coffee, and many other trimmings. Everybody did justice - noone seemed to worry if he had overstepped his amount as Dr. Howard would take care of all immergences (emergencies).
After dinner all gathered at the Library Room - a letter from Clara and Eston was read - as they could not be with us.
A report from last year's reunion was read by Ella - Also one previous to that by Cam.
We then voted the next reunion would be held at Metta's at Goshen, Ind. Aug. Mon. 15-27, she being elected secretary. At 5:30 PM all adjourned, some by boat - others by auto. David left for Wisconsin, Olla, Dorthy, and Marcella staying in Chicago. May we all meet again.

It was voted to place on our minutes a piece of poetry composed by Celestia Hanes and read by her father Altenburg Hanes, the space allowed too small for report. I'm making a special page.
Our smiles are broad; our eyes are bright
Wilmette is the one who entertains
As greetings pass from left to right And hopes and hopes against the rains
And brother, sister, father, son She plans until her head does ache
Turn this day to frolic and fun We'er glad that Goshen is at stake
At our reunion. For our reunion.
And from Chicago comes the flocks
Here are tables piled so high
Of lady folk in fancy frocks And there's the cozy park nearby
There's Cam the oldest and Sarah next Here's everything to make us glad
With all their families at their best To drive away the sorrow, sad
At our reunion. Is our reunion.
Here they come from down on the farm
From the old home with winsome charm
Clara and the boys leave their occupations
For a holidays vacation
At our reunion. Wilmetta Wagner, Sec.
Morning of the 20th came, and Gardner's place was a busy one - Everybody preparing his part for the dinner which was to be served in the pavilion at Grant Park, four miles south. Three autos carried the folks and provisions - meat roasted, coffee made, and served by the attendants at the pavillion. Small tables were pushed together, chairs placed around and napkins laid for 42 guests. Mother Gardner, Emma, Teresa, and Hannah, Sister Mary Ursula, Mother Mary Xavier, James Gardner and family. Miss Murphy and Mrs. Klump all came in time for dinner and to help. While the cooking was going on the young and fleet of foot went through the park and down to the swimming beach, while others took advantage of the rocking chairs inside. Dinner was called at 1 PM which consisted of roast veal, pork, whipped potatoes, salad, coffee, cake, and ice cream--and many other dainties. There was no hurry with the eating, but by the time it was over and things cleared away - we assembled on the lawn for pictures. Several sittings were snapped, followed by some real artistic aerobatics stunts by Florence and Don Heffelfinger. The sun began hiding behind the clouds, rain threatened, and some were already picking up to start home. Business meeting was called. The first, upon calling to order was the presentation by Wilmetta Wagner, of a gavel to the organization. The gavel was made more precious because it was the work done by Carl Wagner, and we all know how Mother did cherish anything made by her wonderful granchildren. Letters noted from Clara & Eston, Alt, and Mettie, those absent; also Irene Gardner, altho in St. Francis, she had to stay in bed and cuddle Mary Ann, just 5 days old. A suggestion was made to buy a lota at a summer resort near Elkhart, Ind. And erect a cottage or shelter, to be used as a permanent place for the reunion. After talking it over Chas. Heffelfinger Sr. was asked to make inquires about location, price, etc. and report at the next reunion. The invitation by Clara, for the next reunion was quickly accepted. After everyone had signed the register - meeting adjourned, the company hurrying homeward to beat the rain...Cameron & Ida, Mettie & Florence Wagner left first - all the rest were taken to the city and St. Francis by David & Virginia acting as taxis. Chas. and Sarah left in the erarly evening. Geo. & family, Don & family staying overnight. The rain came in earnest about 10:00, but we knew all were home or safely under shelter with us -- Uncle Carl staid (stayed) a day longer with us, but he too had to go and all that remained was the sweet memory and knowledge that it would be only a year until the next reunion-- Ella Gardner, Sec.
....a daughter Mary Ann was born to John and Irene Gardner August 15, 1928.
There is a picture labeled "As we were at Grant (County) Park, Aug. 20, 1929. I think this probably should have said 1928 as the next year in 1929, it was held in Butler.

Charles Heffelfinger made a report as to the suggestion of the lot proposition but after investigating it found it to be a poor place, as the lots were back too far. Ida made a motion next meeting to be held in Chicago on Labor Day. It was 2nd by Sarah. Next came a good entertainment from Alt and everybody sat with eyes and ears open enjoying every word. We all enjoyed songs together. In the afternoon Cousin Hattie and David A. and Mr. & Mrs. William Magginis and Mrs. Jake Obendorf called. We had a very distinguished guest and dear friend of our family so many years, dear Aunt Jennie Becthol and no one enjoyed the reunion more than she did. By the middle of the p.m. some had long drives to make and then came the parting, William, Howard, and Mary were the first to say Good By. Then Hazel and the cousins - Metta W. staid (stayed) a few days and Elias remained with us until Wed. She started her journey home stopping with Alt and at Goshen. A letter was read from Uncle Casper, in respond (response) to his invitation to be with us. If we had space would like to record it, but will attach it to our Record book so that we can all enjoy to read it when the book appears again.
One birth was reported, a son to John and Irene Gardner.
Two deaths came in our family and Martha Altenburg and Maud Will A.
One wedding reported; Charles Heffelfinger Jr. and Louise Harrington - We all welcome her to our family.
The only run this year was scored by the Gardners, which keeps them still in the lead--A boy, Walter David, was born to Agnes Gardner Williams - January 19, 1929 at Birmingham, Alabama. This was added.

For the host this reunion date was a long time coming and then grabbing a few words with this then, then that one, the day vanished so quickly and everybody gone, it ended in sadness.
First arrivals were Ella and David the 16th, Clara (&) Eston with Mr. (&) Mrs. Emmet Cox came same day. Sunday brought Metta via Suburban next Dorothy, Wm., and Miss Wilson, the latter being a guest at Milwaukee Reunion 1929 and who seems to be interested in the happiness and affairs of our especially Gardner family (see Marriage records). Lastly came Hazel and Emma Altenburg Cook from Lansing, Mich. - A new member from Mother's side surely welcomed by all as indicated by the presence of her attention received.
A sparse gathering but a busy enjoyable one.

The guests began to arrive Sun. 6th and by eleven o'clock Labor Day all had assembled at 313 E. Washington St. from there all met at the park in time for a gorgeous dinner served at one large table. An ideal day with happy guests marked another anniversary in honor of our beloved parents. Prayer was offered and dinner over a number of short talks followed. The business of the meeting was next transacted. A suggestion was made and carried that we employ some one each year to cater for each reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Nic? Cripe being in charge of the gathering a vote of thanks given to them for the service and quality for the price of .55 per plate. It was moved and carried that we hold our reunion on the Sunday being nearest to Aug. 14th. Goshen was chosen as the most centrally located and most convenient place for all as a permanent location. Contests were next in order winners being Mary Keiss Ella Gardner George Mailloux Jean Heffelfinger.
A number of groups of pictures were taken and everyone certainly had a lovely time visiting. It was decided to extend membership to each and all the remaining relatives and try and have them join us each year and keep the organization growing.
We again gave thanks that we were able to all meet together once more and hoping for next years success we began to depart this ending a perfect day. On Sept. 8th one day too late a letter from Hon. Cosper Altenburg of Little Rock Arkansas was delivered which was to have been read at our meeting but will certainly be held over for Aug. 14, 1932.
Sept. 26th, 1931 Dorothy Gardner was united in marriage to George Mailloux at a beautiful church wedding at St. Francis.

Register for the 1937 Reunion as follows: I am not sure why
some names are twice unless they were asked to add addresses. I think
names and addresses and possibly two years of registars got mixed in together.
I included both lists anyway, because past addresses are nice to know.
