Susannah Clementine Jones was the author of the handwritten document to
which reference is made in the exchange below. I found a copy of this document
in the Clifford Family file in the Davie County Public Library in Mocksville,
NC in 1988. Her maiden name was Susannah Clementine Clifford. She was born
in Davie Co., NC on 8 Sep 1847, married
Henry Jones in Davie Co., NC on 19 Nov 1874 and died in Summitville, IN on 10
Mar 1939. She was a daughter of James Gray Clifford and Rebecca Coker.
James Gray Clifford was born in Rowan Co., NC on 20 May 1816,married Rebecca
Coker in Davie Co., NC on 16 Mar 1839 and died in Cana,Davie Co., NC on 22 Nov
1900. He was a son of Joseph Clifford and Susannah Wells. Joseph Clifford and
Susannah Wells were my great great grandparents.
Susannah Wells was born in Rowan Co., NC on 6 Sep 1787, married
Joseph Clifford in Rowan Co., NC on 15 Apr 1809 and died in Davie Co., NC
on 12 May 1863. She was a daughter of James Wells and Rachel Horn. James
Wells and Rachel Horn were my third great grandparents.
I do not have a date of birth for James Wells. He had two
marriages; I do not know the name of his first wife. By his first wife he
had the following children: Mary, Sarah, Francis and James. I know
little about Mary and Sarah except the names of their husbands. Francis
and James both moved to Indiana while it was still Indiana Territory. In
the 1850 Clark Co., IN census Francis' state of birth was shown as
Connecticut but in the 1860 Clark Co., IN census his state of birth was
shown as Delaware. In the Clark Co., IN 1850 and 1860 censuses the state
of birth shown for Francis' brother, James, was Maryland. The father of
these children, James Wells, had a second wife named Rachel Horn. I do
ot know when or where they were married but I think it is likely that
they married in Rowan Co., NC, since their first child, Susannah, was born
in Rowan Co., NC. James Wells and Rachel Horn were my third great
grandparents. James Wells died intestate in Rowan Co., NC in 1810. There
is a record of the administration of the estate of James Wells in Rowan
Co., NC on 5 Nov 1810. The administrators of his estate were his widow,
Rachel Wells, and his son-in-law, Joseph Clifford. James Wells was the
son of another James Wells; I have not identified James Wells' mother.
This couple were my fourth great grandparents.
It seems likely that all the children of the older James Wells and
his unidentified wife were born in either Delaware or Maryland. I don't
know just when James Wells moved to North Carolina; the first record I
have found for him is his entry onto a tract of land in Surry Co., NC on 5
Apr 1787. This portion of Surry Co., NC is in present-day Yadkin Co., NC
and was located quite near the border with that portion of Rowan Co., NC
that later became Davie Co., NC. This James Wells died in Surry Co., NC
in 1810; his will, dated 25 Jan 1810, was probated in Surry Co., NC in the
Nov, 1810 term. His will identified his wife, Mary, and ten children.
The will lists James' children in the following order: Thomas Wells,
Elizabeth Riece, Lucretia Witty, Nunam Wells, Rachel Hutchens, Susannah
Rash, John Wells, Marian Wells, Mary Beck and James Wells. It seems
likely that James Wells was the oldest of these eight children inasmuch as
the will left to this James Wells "all my land and tenements and also one
half of my moveable property." Some descendants of the James Wells who
died in Surry Co., NC in 1810 think that the wife, Mary, identified in the
5 Jan 1810 will was the mother of these eight children. I tend to doubt
this conclusion. The will, in its reference to James' wife, Mary, left to
her "the land she brought with her when she married" and "the
other half
of my moveable property" with the justification being stated as follows:
"as I consider the property she has brought to me when we were married as
her own I want her to hold the same without any division." It seems
unlikely that this sort of language would be used to refer a wife who was
the mother of his ten children, all of whom were probably born in Delaware
or Maryland. On the contrary it seems more likely that it was used to
refer to a recently married wife who had property which she had inherited
from a former deceased husband. I have found a record of a Rowan Co., NC
marriage bond dated 15 April 1809 (less than a year before the execution
of James Well's will) for the marriage of James Wells and Marey Graham. I
think it is probable that this marriage was for the James Wells who died
in Surry Co., NC in 1810. One further reason for this belief is that one
of the bondsmen for the marriage bond was Joseph Clifford, husband of
James Wells' granddaughter, Susannah Wells. It is also noteworthy that
the date of the marriage of James Wells and Marey Graham was the same date
as the marriage of Joseph Clifford and Susannah Wells.
There is an article in the Surry County Heritage Book by one of the
descendants of Nunam Wells, the son listed in the will of the James Wells
who died in Surry Co., NC in 1810. It is clear that this Nunam Wells is
not the same person as the Newman Wright Wells who is referred to in the
exchange of emails listed below, despite the fact that both Nunam Wells
and Newman Wright Wells at one time lived in Buncombe Co., NC. Newman
Wright Wells was apparently a considerably older person than Nunam Wells.
What information I have about Newman Wright Wells is fragmentary and
sometimes contradictory. If we could get more concrete information about
Newman Wright Wells it is likely that we would find a relationship to the
members of the Wells family whom I have identified as my ancestors.
I hope the presentation of this information on the Wells list will
encourage other descendants of these two James Wells who were my third and
fourth great grandparents to supply any additional information they might
have that might help us resolve some of the unanswered questions presented
in my presentation. Some descendants have identified the wife of the
older James Wells (the one who died in Surry Co., NC in 1810) as a Mary
Price and have cited a marriage of a James Wells and a Mary Price in
Philadelphia Co., PA on 14 Feb 1846. These descendants express the belief
that this Mary Price was the wife, Mary, to whom James Wells referred in
his 1810 Surry County will. I have never found any documented support for
this belief although I have seen it reported in several secondary sources.
