Records of Militia Service

The Militia in Pennsylvania during the Revolution usually consisted of men between 18 and 53 years of age; therefore it is doubtful that any of the Georges are the pioneer - his age - but most likely are the son. Men in southwestern Pennsylvania joined the militia of the colony they were loyal to, Pennsylvania or Virginia, and were exempt from the other. Some avoided service by always claiming allegiance to the other colony when recruiters came. The family loyalties appear to have been split. George and John served in Virginia and don't appear in Pennsylvania rolls until the border was resolved in 1782, while Peter was in Pennsylvania after an early service in Virginia. James appears to have followed Peter when he became old enough to serve. Their names appear consecutively on one of the rolls. Daniel's name isn't found in any record until 1792 when he is listed as a Lieutenant. He was then about 30 years of age and obviously had served before to be chosen to a leadership position.

The Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd Series, Volume XIII contains "The following list of soldiers of the War for Independence has been compiled chiefly from the Depreciation Books in the Office of the Auditor General of Pennsylvania" with a "George Waddle" listed on page 233. There is no reference to location, unit or year(s) of service; he could have been any George Waddle anywhere in the state. There no way of determining if it is the pioneer George or maybe his son. Interestingly, his name is the only variation of Weddell, in any form, that is listed.
