is a worthy motto, and that they have done. As elected public officials, sheriffs were sworn to keep the peace within the bounds of our county. Sheriffs have historically had the odious responsibilities that include riding a day by horseback to execute warrants or serve subpoenaes, delivering prisoners to other counties and policing the expansive rural areas of Sumner County, which has never been an easy task.

There are no known portraits of the earliest Sheriffs from the 1780's, however, there are photos of Sheriffs that go back as far as 1880.
