The Call to Arms:
Sumner County
in the
Civil War

From 1861 to 1865 we slaughtered hundreds of thousands of our own countrymen. Never in our history had we lost as many soldiers in any war, nor have we since.
The carnage and destruction was rampant, the disfigurement horrendous, and disease decimated men on both sides, especially those who had been captured and placed in Prisoner of War encampments. More notorious than any others, the Andersonville Prison was a death camp. Men developed typhoid and dysentery at an alarming rate. Fresh water supplies were tainted by their own excrement. Clean bandages and fresh food were unheard of.
