Generation Three

4. Harman Utterback was born in 1746 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. 58, 59He married Elizabeth Crump (see #5), daughter of George Crump, in 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. 60, 61He married Margaret Strumatt in 1796 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. 62He died in 1826 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. 63, 64

Harman Utterback, b. 1746, of Fauquier Co., Va. was the 4th son of Henry and Agnes (Brumback) Utterback of Fauquier Co. This Harman Utterback of Fanquier Co. was Prof. W. I. Utterback's direct ancestor, and he seems to give an accurate account of the family, but strangely enough makes Harman of Fauquier Co. a son of Henry Utterback (1714-1799) of Culpeper Co. Harman Utterback of Fauquier Co. owned land in Culpeper Co., which he was deeded by his eldest brother, Henry, in 1774, as mentioned previously (Culpeper D. B. "G", p. 313). He continued to own this Culpeper land until 1812, when he made deeds of gift for it to his sons, Thompson and James Utterback (Culpeper Co. D. B. "FF", pp. 200 and 201). However, this Harman Utterback lived all his life in Fauquier, all his sons are shown as tithables there, and he himself died there in 1826, leaving a will which mentions all his children. This Harman was, therefore, almost certainly a son of Henry and Agnes Utterback of Fauquier Co. He was, according to the Utterback book (p. 39), where he is shown as No. 32, born in 1746 at Germantown, d. in Fauquier Co. in 1826, m. (1) 1769 Elizabeth Crump (b. 1750, d. 1795), and (2) in 1796 Margaret Strumatt, a Frenchwoman, who d. before 1826 and by whom he had no children. The first wife was a daughter of George Crump, who died in Fauquier Co. in 1789 leaving a will in which he mentions his daughter, Elizabeth Utterback.

The children of Harman Utterback and Elizabeth Crump were: (1) Nancy Utterback. b. Oct. 7, 1770, d. unmarried in 1790; (2) James Utterback, b, 1771 m. Susannah Green; descendants given in the genealogy; (3) Sally Utterback. b. Oct. 5, 1773, d. before 1826, m. April 20, 1796 Thomas Norman; no descendants given; (4) Elijah Utterback b. 1776, m. Susannah Bice, descendants given; (5) Judith Utterback b. 1777, m. 1801 Elijah Sanders, bond Fauquier Co. Dec. 22, 1801, with Harman Utterback on bond; descendants given; (6) Nathaniel Utterback, b. 1779, m. Molly Tomlin, daughter of John Tomlin, bond April 4, 1804; descendants given; (7) Mary Utterback, b. Feb. 7, 1781, m. Feb. 15, 1812 Edward Settle, no descendants given; (8) French Utterback, b. 1783, m. Frances Burgess, descendants given; (9) Thompson Utterback, Professor Utterback's ancestor, b. 1785, m. Oct. 12, 1809 Elizabeth Vaughan, descendants given; (10) Willis Utterback, b. 1788, m. (1) Barbara Brown and (2) Harriet Griffin, descendants given; (11) Armistead Utterback, b. 1790, m. Mary Price Crump, descendants given; (12) Thornton Utterback, b. 1792, m. Matilda Ann Crump, descendants given: (13) Ann (Nancy) Utterback, b. 1794, m. George Crump, descendants given. 65
Children of Harman Utterback and Elizabeth Crump (see #5) were as follows:
5. Elizabeth Crump was born in 1750. 92, 93She married Harman Utterback (see #4), son of Henry Utterback and Anges Brumback, in 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. 94, 95She died in 1795. 96

6. David Smith Vaughan was born in 1750 in Culpeper County, Virginia, USA. He married Mary Catherine Anderson (see #7) in 1780 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, USA. He died on 22 Aug 1825 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, USA.
His Ancestral File Number is 1L90-D8.
Children of David Smith Vaughan and Mary Catherine Anderson (see #7) were as follows:

7. Mary Catherine Anderson was born in 1748 in Lunenburg County?, Virginia, USA. She married David Smith Vaughan (see #6), son of William Vaughan and Elizabeth (--?--), in 1780 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, USA.
Her Ancestral File Number is 1L90-FF.
GenSmarts estimates - Mary Catherine Anderson [1183]: She was born in 1748 in Lunenburg County?, Virginia, USA, and she died in GSEST. 1815 in (perhaps Fauquier County, Virginia). She married David Smith Vaughan [1182] on 1780 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, USA, and had the following children: Mary [1188] (GSEST. 1785), Robert [1189] (GSEST. 1770), James [1179] (1781), Balin [1186] (1787), Willis [1184] (1788), Elizabeth [1187] (1790), and Pleasant [1185] (1793).

Her date of death was estimated based on the following events:

1748 - she was born
1793 - her child, Pleasant Vaughan [1185] was born
1780 - her spouse, David Smith Vaughan [1182], was married. 97

Generation Four

8. Henry Utterback was born on 21 Sep 1698 in Trupbach, Germany. 98He married Anges Brumback (see #9), daughter of Melchior Brumback and Elizabeth (--?--). 99He died in 1798. 100

GenSmarts estimates - Henry Utterback [4727]: He was born on 21-SEP-1698 in Trupbach, Germany, and he died in 1798 in (perhaps Fauquier County, Virginia). He married Anges Brumback [4728] on GSEST. 1735, and had the following children: Henry [4880] (ABT. 1737), John [4881] (ABT. 1740), Jacob [4882] (1743), Harman [4725] (1746), Benjamin [4883] (1754), and Charles [4884] (1769). His parents were Johannes Otterbach [4729] (b. 1692 in Trupbach, Germany, d. GSEST. 1745), and Margarethe Dornsieffer [4885] (b. GSEST. 1678, d. GSEST. 1736).

His marriage estimated to be in 1735 was estimated based on the following events:

ABT. 1737 - his child, Henry Utterback Jr. [4880] was born
1769 - his child, Charles Utterback [4884] was born
1698 - he was born. 101

Corrections in the Utterback Genealogy in America

Professor William I. Utterback, Marshall College, Huntington, W. Va., published in 1938 "The Utterback Family, 1620-1938" an excellent genealogy of the Utterback family. However, there seems to me to be some need for corrections in his account of the first four generations of the family. He traced all the Virginia Utterbacks back to Harman Utterback, the 1714 immigrant, through his sons John Philip and John, while it seems to me that the evidence we have shows that they were all descended from Harman Utterback's nephew and great-nephew, the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734. As indicated in previous chapters, it seems highly probable that Harman Utterback came over in 1714 with his sons-in-law, Jacoh Holtzclaw and John Kemper, as did his contemporary, Philip Fishback. This view is confirmed by the early tradition in the Kemper genealogy that Harman Utterbach was a member of the 1714 group, by the fact that there is no record of his family in the Siegen church books after that date, and that unless he came to Virginia in 1714, it seems impossible to find wives for John Joseph Martin and Harman Fishback, and a second wife for Peter Hitt young enough to have been the mother of his children. As indicated previously, all these wives are proved to have immigrated in 1714, and their names correspond to those of Harman Utterback's daughters. In view of these facts, Professor Utterback thought that the later Utterbacks were all descended from Harman and gives the following pedigree (with numbers used in the genealogy):
1. Harman Utterback, b. ca. 1663, d. in Prince William Co. after 1748 (!).
4. John Philip Utterback, son of Harman, b. 1692, d. in Prince William Co., Va., m __________, and had sons: 17. Henry Utterback; 18. John Henry Utterback.
9. John Utterback, son of Harman, b. 1702 in Germany, d. at Germantown after 1772, when he witnessed a deed from Jacob and Mary Rector to Jacob Utterback; wife unknown; sons: 28. Harman Utterback; 29. Henry Utterback.
The third generation is then given as follows:
17. Henry Utterback, son of John Philip, b. at Germantown 1717, d. in Culpeper Co., Va. 1799, wife Anna; sons: 30. John Utterback (of Fauquier Co.) b. 1740, d. 1826, with an account of his family from the Fauquier records: 31. Joseph Utterback, b. ca. 1742, of Culpeper Co.; 32. Harman Utterback, b. 1746. of Fauquier Co., Prof. Utterback's ancestor, with details of his family from the Fauquier records: 34. Jacob Utterback. b. ca. 1750 of Culpeper Co.; 40. Henry Utterback, b. 1770, of Culpeper Co.; 41. William Utterback, b. 1771, of Culpeper Co.
18. John Henry Utterback, son of John Philip, m. Frankie, granted land in Culpeper Co. in 1747 and 1751, deeded land there in 1774 with wife, Frankie; sons 42. John Utterback, b. 1747, unknown wife, of Culpeper Co.; 43. Henry Utterback, b. ca. 1751, of Culpeper Co., m. Tabitha McDowell in 1796; 44. Elijah Utterbach, b. 1752, shown in Culpeper Co. in 1810; no further reference.
28. Harman Utterback, son of John, b. 1721 at Germantown, d. after 1793, unknown wife; sons: 45. Jacob Utterback, b. 1743 of Fauquier Co. (later for a short time Culpeper); 46. Joel Utterback, b. ca. 1747, no further reference; 47. Benjamin Utterback, b. 1754, of Fauquier Co.; 48. Harman Utterback, b. 1755, of Culpeper Co.
29. Henry Utterback, son of John, b. ca. 1725 at Germantown, m. Agnes Brumback of Germantown; sons, 49. Henry Utterback, b. ca. 1758, of Fauquier Co.; 50. Peyton Utterback, no further reference; 51. Charles Utterback, b. 1769, of Fauquler Co.
With regard to the first and second generations given above, Professor Utterback gave no documentary evidence at all from the Virginia records, except in the case of John Utterback, son of Harman, who is identified with the John Utterback who witnessed the Rector deed at Germantown in 1772. However, everything seems to indicate that the witness in 1772 was John Utterback, No. 30 above, who lived all his life in Fauquier Co. The complete silence of the Virginia records on Harman Utterback and his sons, John Philip and John, would seem to indicate that, like Philip Fishback, they all died early at Germanna, and the sons left no heirs. This would not affect the question so much, if we did not have the records fairly clearly on the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734.
With regard to the third generation as given in the genealogy, the following seems to be indicated by the Virginia records: (1) Henry Utterback, No. 17, is well attested by the records of Culpeper Co., lived there practically all his life, and died in 1799, leaving a will; he seems almost certainly to be identical with the younger Henry Utterback who came over in 1734, b. at Trupbach in 1714; (2) I can find no documentary trace of John Henry Utterback, No. 18; the Henry Utterback who was granted land in Culpeper Co. in 1747 and 1751 was Henry Utterback, No. 17, just preceding; the Henry Utterback who deeded land in Culpeper Co. with his wife Frankie in 1774 is specifically called "Henry Utterback of Fauquier Co." in the deed, and seems to have been identical with Henry Utterback No. 49; (3) I can also find no trace of Harman Utterback No. 28 in the documents, though the Fauquier Co. records refer many times to Harman No. 46; (4) Henry Utterback No. 29 seems almost certainly to have been the elder Henry who came over in 1734, b. at Trupbach in 1698, who m. Agnes Brumback soon after his arrival in this country. Of the four grandsons of Harman Utterback listed in the genealogy, then, (Henry No. 17 and John Henry No. 18, sons of John Philip Utterback, and Harman No. 28 and Henry No. 29, sons of John Utterback) only the two Henrys are definitely shown in the documents, while the records seem to be silent about John Henry No. 18 and Harmon No. 28 as about their supposed fathers, John Philip and John Utterback.
If the above is the case, it seems that Professor Utterback was acting on an erroneous hypothesis, though a reasonable one at the time, in trying to trace all the documented Utterbacks of the fourth generation back to Harmon Utterback. Most of the fourth generation men of the genealogy were sons of the 1734 immigrants, Henry b. 1698 and Henry b. 1714, the former of Fauquier Co. and the latter of Culpeper Co. The evidence I have indicates that the following men, all of whom were definitely identified with Fauquier Co., were sons of Henry Utterback (b. 1698) and his wife Agnes Brumback: Henry No. 49, John No. 30, Jacob No. 45, Harman No. 32, Benjamin No. 47, and Charles No. 51, in the very probable order of their births; and that the following men, all of whom lived in Culpeper Co., were sons of Henry Utterback (1714-1799) of Culpeper: Joseph No. 31, John No. 42, Harman No. 48, Jacob No. 34, Henry No. 40, and William No. 41, also in the order of their ages. As to the other fourth generation men of the genealogy, Henry Utterback No. 43 seems to have been a much younger man than given in the genealogy, and was probably a son of Henry No. 49 of Fauquier Co. or of John No, 42 of Culpeper; I cannot place Elijah Utterback No. 44, unless he was identical with Elijah No. 65, son of Harman No. 32 (who seems to fit in very well here); and I can find no documentary reference to Joel Utterback No. 46 nor to Peyton Utterback No. 50. As Mr. W. H. Utterback, Jr., 1532 Lipscomb St., Amarillo, Texas, informs me that the Utterback genealogy, of which no extra copies for sale survived Professor Utterback's death, is now being republished by descendants, what follows in this chapter will deal only with the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734 and their sons, as all the Virginia Utterbacks seem to be descended from them.

Henry Utterback (b. 1698, d. before 1779) of Fauquier Co, Va.

Henry Utterback of Fauquier Co., Va. or Johann Henrich Otterbach, b. Sept. 21, 1698 at Trupbach. son of Johannes and Margarethe (Dornsieffer) Otterbach, seems to be the Henry Utterback who soon after his arrival in Virginia in 1734 married Agnes, daughter of Melchior and Elizabeth Brumback of the 1714 colony, and settled at Germantown on the Brumback land, which was deeded to him and his wife Agnes by the other Brumback heirs in 1746 (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 60; see also the section on the Brumback family in this book). Agnes (Brumback) Utterback was probably b. ca. 1720, much younger than her husband, and d. in Fauquier Go., Va. some time between 1790, when she deeded the Germantown land to her youngest son, Charles Utterback, and 1804, when Charles and his eldest brother, Henry Utterback, deeded away the same land (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 61). Henry Utterback (Sr.) was excused from levies in Fauquier Co. June 24, 1762 (Fauquier Co. Minutes, 1759-62, p. 273), an indication of the fact that he was probably around 60 years of age, when men were frequently excused from taxes. This fits in with the hypothesis that he was the Johann Henrich Otterbach born in 1698. I think that he probably died prior to 1770, when the Henry Utterback charged with the 100 acres at Germantown was probably his eldest son, Henry. It is more certain that the 200 acres charged to Henry Utterback in 1777 was the son, for the latter had purchased an additional 100 acres at Germantown in 1772 (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 60). It is quite certain that Henry, Sr. was dead by 1782, the first year of the personal tax lists, for in that year Agnes Utterback is shown with 1 tithable, namely, her youngest son, Charles, while her eldest son, Henry, was an independent tithable. 102
