Several women were asked to view the body of the dead child born to Mary the daughter of Sarah Carter; it was taken from the ground in the garden where "it was very shallow put in. Then we caused Sarah the wife of Paul Carter and mother of the said Mary to touch, handle and stroke the child in which time we saw no alteration in the body of the child. Afterwards we called for Paul Carter to touch the child and immediately [while] he was stroking the child the black and settled places about the body of the child grew fresh and red. so that the blood was ready to come through the skin of the child. We also observed the countenance of the said Paul Carter to alter into very much paleness. The child also appearing to us to be very much neglected in several respects as to the preservation of such an infant, and we do conclude if the child had any violence, it was by the throat which was very black and continued so, though other places which were black altered to red and fresh colered." CHRISTOPHER CALVERT
BIRTH: ABT. 1611, Easton, Yorkshire, England

Duelling was quite common on the Eastern Shore in the seventeenth century, and some of the indentured servants seem to have been as fiery in nature and as quick to resent an affront, real or imaginary, as were their masters. In 1661, a servant belonging to Christopher Calvert, sent a peremptory challenge to Goslin Van Netson, a citizen of Dutch origin. The challenge was accepted, the duel fought and the servant badly wounded. Calvert was ordered by the county court to pay for the present, all the fees which Dr. George Nicholas Hacke should charge for medical attendance on the injured man, but they were ultimately to be shared by Van Netsen, who had inflicted the wound. Calvert was to be compensated by an extension of the servant’s term of service.1 It is probable that, in this case, the servant sending the challenge really belonged to a higher social grade than appears in the records. Many of those bound by articles of indenture were, as we have seen, young men of gentle connections, whose social antecedents were inconsistent with the position in which they placed themselves; or it may be they had signed the articles in order to learn some specified pursuit, like tobacco planting, before embarking in it on their own independent account.2
Dr. Severn, Peter Cropper, and the first of the Tullys were entered in the records as servants, though they were all men of high social standing, the first named having received his professional education in Germany. But let return to the duel. It is not likely that Van Netzen would have accepted a challenge from an ordinary servant, as that would have been regarded as a confession on his part of the social equality of his antagonist with himself. At any rate, the servant seems to have got the worst of the affair both in the conflict and the subsequent settlement of damages, which after all was quite proper in view of his insolence.

On 01 Mar 1668 Christopher won a judgment against Dikes for the 1500 pounds of tobacco and caske and costs.737

Could she be a Mellings or a Bibby? Christopher seemed closely associated with those families. Or does "S" stand for her maiden name? How about Scarburgh?

In 1680 Elinor and her daughter were witnesses in an Accomack Co. coroner's inquest in a case of infanticide. A prevalent belief in 17th century England and Scotland was that a murderer touching or coming into the presence of a victim's body would cause the wounds to bleed again. In this case, a male child was born to Mary, d/o Sarah Carter, w/o Paul, who is called Mary's father-in-law [stepfather, I assume]. Mary said she was forced to have sex once with James Tuck and had sex with Paul Carter many times. Sarah and Paul secretly buried the child, who they said had died during the night. Mary (X) Sipple and Elener S. Calvert were among 12 women who watched as Sarah, and then Paul, touched the child's body. Paul's touch caused it to begin bleeding; he turned pale and the observers thought there was bruising at the child's throat. Date of this examination was 1 Mar 1679. All three--Mary, Sarah, Paul--were indicted, to be held for trial in James City.

288. Henry Bowman married Mary (--?--) (see #289).759 He died in 1694.760
