Ella Hayward, the eldest daughter of Walter and Mary (Markey) Hayward, and grandaughter James and Margaret (Howel) Hayward, was married to Abe Gardner Duffie in 1889. Abe was born in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and came with his parents to Missouri when a young man. Soon after their marriage, Ella and Abe went to housekeeping on a farm southeast of Kirksville, Missouri, owned by Ella's grandfather, James Hayward. The grandfather later deeded the farm to Ella and her husband and here they continued to live and rear their family of eight children -- three daughters and five sons -- and here the father, Abe Duffie, died and was buried in Cater Memorial Cemetery. The mother, Ella, remained on the farm after her husband's death until the children, one by one , finished their schooling and went out on their own. She then sold the farm and moved to Kirksville, Missouri, where she lived for a number of years. She died in the home of of her eldest son, Warren Luther Duffie, and was buried in Cater Memorial Cemetery beside her husband. Ella and Abe were members of the Methodist Church.130
Abe Gardner Duffie was born on 16 Jan 1863 in Elizabethtown, Hardin County, Kentucky.131,132,133,134,135,136,137,138,139,140 He died on 15 Jun 1928 in Benton Township, Adair County, Missouri, at age 65 due to mitral insufficiency due to cardiac asthma.141,142,143,144,145 He was buried on 17 Jun 1928 in Cater Memorial Cemetery, Adair County, Missouri.146,147
