1. THOMAS (HADDAM FOUNDER)2 BROOKS (HENRY1) was born 1639 in Concord, Middlesex, MA, and died October 18, 1668 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married (1) . He married (2) ALICE (MARAH) SPENCER 1662 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, daughter of Gerrard Spencer and Hannah Hills.

Brooks, Thomas, Haddam. Died 18 October, 1668: Invt. 109-09-00. Taken by Simon Smith & George Gates. The children: Sarah, born December 1662; Thomas, June 1664; Marah, June 1666; Alice, December, 1668.

Court Record, Page 99-11 April 1670: Adms. is granted to the present Husband of the Widow of sd. Brooks. Order for Dist: To the Widow, 32 and 1/3 of the profits of the Land during life, she maintaining & bringing up the Children & teaching the daughters to read and sew and the son to read and write; to the son 22, to the three daughters to each of them 14.

Thomas Brooks was the town Blacksmith.

On the lot south of James Wells's ravine, was the home of Thomas Brooks the blacksmith. Thomas is thought to have come over in the "Susan and Ellen" in 1635. He kept a hotel at New London in 1659. By his second wife, Alice Spencer, he became the father of Thomas Brooks, the second deacon.

iv. ALICE BROOKS, b. December 1668, Haddam, Middlesex, CT.

2. THOMAS (DEACON)3 BROOKS (THOMAS (HADDAM FOUNDER)2, HENRY1) was born June 1664 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died April 06, 1734 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married SUSANNAH ARNOLD March 16, 1695/96 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, daughter of Joseph Arnold and Elizabeth Wakeman.

Notes:  His mother, Marah Alice Spencer, committed Thomas to the care of her brother John Spencer at the age of 4 (when Thomas Brooks, her husband died) when she remarried Thomas Shaylor.

Brooks, Deacon Thomas, Haddam. Died 6 April 1734. Invt. taken 28 June, 1734, by Joseph Arnold, Caleb Cone and Thomas Sheldon. Will dated 24 February, 1728-9.

I, Thomas Brooks of Haddam, do make this my last will and testament: I give and bequeath to Susannah, my wife, the use of my dwelling house, barn and shop, and all that part of land hereinafter given to my son Jabez as his portion, for and until he shall attain to the age of 21 years if he live so long, or till she shall married again, which shall happen first. I also give her 1 weaving loom, together with half the tackling belonging to two looms, and if sd. Jabez arrive at the age aforsd. and she remain still my widow, I give her the use of one end of my dwelling house (which she shall choose), viz., two rooms, so long as she shall continue my widow. I give to my wife ye third part of all my moveable estate forever. As touching my eldest son Thomas, I have already by deed of gift settled his inheritance upon him, reserving 8 to be paid by him to me or my order. As to my son Abraham, I have already by deed of gift settled his inheritance upon him, reserving 9 to be paid by him to me or my order. Item. I give to my son Jabez, and to his heirs and assigns forever all my land lying southwestward on his brother Abraham's land, butting theron northwesterly, butting northeast partly on the Great River and partly on land of Capt. James Welles, and butting on land of Capt. Caleb Cone southeast, he to pay to his only sister Eunice 10 in money at the age of 18 years. I give to my son Joseph all my lands and rights of land, divided and undivided, within the bounds of Haddam, be the same more or less, which is not by me already disposed of, except the sixth division lott laid out upon my list which lyes near Flag Swamp. I give to my daughter Mary, over and above what I have already given and done for her, 20 shillings of money. I give tomy other five daughters, viz., Elizabeth, Susannah, Thankful, Sarah and Eunice, all my moveable estate not herinbefore disposed of, and also 8 in money to be paid them by their brother Thomas, and 9 in money to be paid them by their brother Abraham. And whereas, two of my sd. daughters, viz., Elizabeth and Susannah, are deceased, I do will and determine that their children, Viz., Elizabeth lester and Susannah Smith, shall have their mother's part of my estate, and that the 17 in money last mentioned be equally divided and paid to my sd. daughters and sd. grandchildren, Mary and Eunice not to have any part thereof, but are hereby exempted. Finally, I do appoint my loving wife Susannah and my loving son Thomas executors.
