Descendants of John Stonard
Generation No. 1
1. John1 Stonard1 was born Abt. 16001, and died Bef. 13 Aug 1649 in Roxbury, Suffolk, MA. He married Margaret Miller1 12 Mar 1631/32 in London, Middlesex, England (St. Dunstan's-in-the-West)1, daughter of Thomas Miller and ? ?. She was born Bef. 02 Oct 1603 in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England, and died Bet. 1682 - 1683 in Dedham, Norfolk, MA1.
Notes for John Stonard:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John Stonard, Roxbury, 1645; in August of that year, mortgaged his estate to Governor Dudley, and the same was discharged January 1647; was of the church, but took not the freeman’s oath; and was buried, 13 August 1649, a middle-aged man, says Eliot. Perhaps he brought wife and children from England. - Savage, Vol. IV., p. 203.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The parents of John Stonard have not been found at this date, May 1941. Several Stonards (all spelled S-T-O-N-A-R-D) lived in Essex County, England, in the region of Loughton, Stapleford-Abbott and Harlow.
John and Margaret (Miller) Stonard remained in England ten years after their marriage before removing to Roxbury, New England. Thus there was time enough for them to have had several children born in England. However, the Parish Register of St. Dunstan’s-in-the-West contains no baptisms nor burials of their children. Two children, probably of John and Margaret (Alice and Joseph), about eight to ten years old are supposed to have arrived in Roxbury.
The Stonards arrived in Roxbury 1642/3; they purchased from Richard Pepper a house and eight acres of land paying £50. He mortgaged the house and land to Governor, the Hon. Thomas Dudley in 1645, which mortgage was discharged January 1646.
They may have had younger children for (John Stonard’s) inventory (20 August 1649) contains this item: “1 trundle bedd.” None are mentioned in Roxbury Vital Records. John Stonard died 13 August 1649, “midle aged or litle more,” indicating his birth about 1600, three years before Margaret.
About a year later, Margaret, at the age of 47/8, and the widow of John Stonard, married Thomas Waterman of Roxbury as his second wife. The latter is thought to be from Bishop’s Hatfield, County Essex, a few miles east of Bishop’s Stortford. Waterman died 1675 leaving the bulk of his estate to his wife. She died 1682, aged 79, at Dedham, probably in the home of her niece and principal heir, Ann Bullard nee Burnap.

Notes for Lemuel Stannard:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: Lemuel Stannard is tentatively assigned as a son of William Stannard and Mercy Wright. He is almost certainly a descendant of the first Joseph Stannard of Haddam and Saybrook. If he was, in fact, born around 1712, he could not have been a child of the second Joseph Stannard, since Joseph was deceased and his widow, Hannah (Brackett), was remarried to Andrew Warner 04 April 1706. John Stannard married in 1717 and there is no indication of an earlier wife. That leaves Samuel and William as potential fathers; Samuel had a child 24 March 1712/3. Either William or Samuel is a possibility with William seeming slightly more probable than Samuel if for no other reason that Lemuel named a son William but did not name one Samuel. - WDC, 23 September 2005.
