1. JAMES (CAPT) (HADDAM FOUNDER)1 WELLS was born 1643, and died January 05, 1697/98 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. He married ELIZABETH CLARK 1667, daughter of William Clark and Katheren Bunce.

Wells, Capt. James sen., Haddam. Invt. 422-29-06. Taken 5 January 1697-98, by John Smith, Daniel X Brainard and Timothy X Spencer. The children: James Welles, Thomas 15 years, Elizabeth Smith, Mary Arnold & Susannah Welles. Relict, Elizabeth Welles (?). Will dated 9 June, 1690.
I James Welles sen. of Haddam, being employed in the Country Service, doe think it my duty to set my worldly affairs in some Order. Item. It is my Will that my wife shall have my Homelott & House, and one of the 3-acre Lotts on the East side of the Great River, and my upper Lott in the Meadow, during her Widowhood; and if she marry again, then all to return to my son James. My son James shall have my Dwelling house & Homelott, and all the Land on the West side of the Great River, and all my Land in the Upper Meadow, & all my Rights on the Plaine on the East side of the Great River, he not claiming any right at Machamoodus. And my Will is that my son Thomas Welles shall have my Cow Meadow Lott, & all my Rights at Machamoodus. My son James shall have all my Moveables of Stock and all other things not above disposed of, and he my son James to pay to my daughter Elizabeth 10 besides what she hath already had. And to pay to my 2 daughters, Mary and Susannah Welles, when they come to age, 15 apeice.

Court Record, Page 44-22 June, 1698: The last Will & Testament of Capt. James Welles exhibited in Court, and Capt. George Gates made Oath that the Testator did in their presence sign and declare it to be his last Will. Accepted, proven, and ordered to be recorded. There being no Executor expressed by Will, this Court grant Adms. to James Welles to perform the Will of the Deceased.
A seven-acre lot on the east side of the road, in the ravine where the brook runs, was laid out to James Wells, after whom the brook was named; but his house was half a mile away. Before coming to Haddam (1650), he had lived with William Pynchon, the founder of Springfield. He was captain of the militia in 1694.

2. MARY2 WELLS (JAMES (CAPT) (HADDAM FOUNDER)1) was born 1670 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, and died December 02, 1714 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT. She married JOSIAH ARNOLD 1695 in Haddam, Middlesex, CT, son of Joseph Arnold and Elizabeth Wakeman.

Arnold, Mary, Haddam. Invt. 30-18-05. Taken 4 December, 1714, by Simon Smith, Ebenezer Frisbie and Joseph arnold. Will nuncupative, dated 2 July, 1714.
The widow, Mary Arnold, late wife to Josiah Arnold deceased, sometime before her death, and then at that time in her right mind and understanding, did declare to us, James Wells and Rebeckah Wells, in these words: "That what estate is mine I give and will it to my two dafters." Mr. James Wells and Rebeckah Wells his wife, above named, being neither of them able to attend Court at this time, appeared in Haddam and made oath that the above-named widow, now deceased, called them to her (and sayd as above) that what estate was hers she willed to her two daughters, and desired them to see that this was performed, and that the said words were spak to them ye same day she departed.
