OCTOBER DEATHS

 

October 5, 1838 

 

 

 

At Mawnan, on Monday last, Mrs. Richards, relict of the late Capt. Richards, of the Falmouth Packet service, aged 62 years.     

 

At Newquay, on Sunday last, Mary, only daughter of Mr. Pascoe Billing, aged 14 years.

 

At Penzance, on Wednesday the 26th ult., suddenly, much and deservedly respected and lamented, Miss Drew, milliner, aged 51 years.

 

At St. Erth, last week, Mr. Henry Colliver, aged 85 years, greatly esteemed by all who were acquainted with him.

 

At Plymouth, on the 29th ult., Edward, son of Capt. Hoppen, of the schooner “Swife”, of London, aged 5 years and 6 months.

 

At West Looe, on the 19th ult., Isaac Wilcock, Esq., aged 49 years, most deservedly lamented by a large circle of friends; also, on the 29th ult., Mr. Fleming, excise officer, aged 41 years.

 

On the 30th ult., at Barbagon, St. Martins,Mr. Joseph Phillips, at an advanced age.

 

On Tuesday, the 25th ult., at Ottery St. Mary, aged 76 years, Christopher Salter, Esq.; through life his actions were always characterized by integrity and benevolence, and his last hours were gilded with that peace which can alone emanate from faith in a Redeemer’s Love.

 

In London, on the 24th ult., Mr. James Landray, aged 48 years, a few years since coachman to the Duchess of Cumberland (now Queen of Hanover), and brother to Mr. Landray, at the Asylum, Exeter. 

 

At the island of Dominica (West Indies), Major John Longley, the newly-arrived Lieut. Governor of that island.

 

Lately, at Ashendon, Bucks, Elizabeth Toms, aged 105 years.  She retained her facilities till within a few days of her death, and never used a pair of spectacles in her life.

 

On his passage to New South Wales, on the 3rd of July, 1837, Richard Edwards, late master of the “Ada”, who was convicted at the Old Bailey, and transported for having caused the death of the boy on board his vessel.  [this case was covered in the paper; Edwards was from Scilly.] 

 

 

October 12, 1838

 

We have to record this week the death of our gallant countryman, Vice Admiral Sir. J. Tremayne Rodd, K.C.B., which took place on the 4th instant, at Tonbridge Wells, after a short illness.  After having attained an eminent station in his profession, the high reputation of which he always zealously promoted, and to which to the last he was warmly attached, he passed the latter part of his life in London, where he had opportunities of enjoying more particularly the society of the numerous Naval and other distinguished friends whose acquaintance he had formed during a long and active life.  Whether as a valuable public supporter of many and essentially charitable societies connected with the Navy,-  as a man ever ready without ostentation to “lend a hand” either in dangers, troubles, or sickness, to do good to his neighbour, -  or as an affectionate husband and parent, his loss will be long and deeply felt.

 

At Truro, on Sunday last, after a long and severe illness, borne with great patience and resignation, Mr. J. C. Downe, conveyancer, aged 42 years.  The urbanity of his manners, and kindness of heart in life, justly endeared him to all those who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his death is deeply regretted by his parents, and a numerous circle of friends.

 

At Truro, on Saturday last, Mr. John Gill, aged 58 years.

 

At Tregarden, in the parish of St. Mabyn, after a short illness, Elizabeth, eldest daughter of John Andrew, Esq.

 

On Thursday the 4th inst, at Elbridge, Mrs. Wymond, aged 38 years.

 

At Newquay, on Sunday the 7th instant, Mr. William Allen, aged 55 years.

 

At Penzance, on Tuesday last, Mrs. Millett, aged 81 years.

 

At Ludgvan, on Monday last, Mr. John Trebalcock, aged 40 years.

 

On the 29th ult., in London, Mr. John Cradock, of Bodmin, aged 84 years.

 

On Sunday last, in the 76th year of his age, John Bryant, Esq., solicitor, of Bishop’s Lydeard.  The deceased was for upwards of 30 years clerk to the magistrates of the division in which he resided, and was as less respected in his professional capacity than he was esteemed by all within the social sphere in which he lived.

 

On the 21st of September, at Bideford, after an illness of twelve months, Caroline Chapman, wife of T. L. Pridham, Esq., and sixth daughter of the late James Patch, Esq., of Topsham.

 

Oct 4, aged 69, at her residence, Hampton buildings, St. Sidwell’s, Exeter, in the full triumph of faith, Ursula, wife of the Rev. E. Milward, Wesleyan minister.

 

October 19, 1838

 

 

On Monday last, at Dunstanville-terrace, Falmouth, Jane, eldest daughter of John Symonds, Esq.  This amiable young lady was 19 years of age, and in the full enjoyment of health but a day of two before her decease.

 

At Falmouth, on the 11th instant, Mr. H. Stephens, of the New Inn, aged 64 years.

 

Lately, at Lamorrick, Lanivet, Mrs. Wm. Marshall, aged 27 years.

 

At the Arora Copper mines, Columbia, after an illness of two years, which she bore with Christian fortitude, Elizabeth, wife of Capt. Henry Roach, aged 28 years.  Her end was peace.

 

At Redruth, on Wednesday last, the infant son of Mr. John Bennett, jun.

 

At Ludgvan, on Wednesday last, Mr. James Pooly, aged 23 years, much respected by all who knew him.

 

At Helston, on Monday last, Mr. W. Edwards, aged 75 years, a respectable yeoman of the parish of Mawnan.  He died in the full hope of a glorious immortality.

 

On Sunday morning last, at Porth, Lower St. Columb, Mr. Samuel Martyn, a respectable farmer aged 63 years.

 

At St. Goran Vicarage, on Wednesday the 17th last, Charlotte, daughter of the late Wm. Richards, Esq., of Penryn.

 

Suddenly, at Probus, on Friday last, Mr. Wm. Searle, aged 76 years.

 

October 26, 1838

 

 

At Sinns, near Redruth, on Saturday, Mrs. Nicholas Harris, jun.

 

At Redruth, Esther, wife of Mr. Richard Bolitho, aged 65 years.

 

Suddenly, at the Dock, near the quay, Penzance, Mr. John Matthews, aged 75 years.

 

At Penzance, on Tuesday last, Miss Symons.

 

At St. Kew, aged 3 years, John Eudey, the beloved son of William and Emblin Higgs.

 

At Highertown, near Truro, on Monday last, Mr. John Nicholls, wheelwright, aged 91 years.

 

At St. Michael’s Mount, on the 23d last, Kitty, youngest daughter of Mr. Martin Pearce, aged 19 years.

 

At Marazion, 21st inst., the only child of Mr. Elisha Phillips, aged 9 months.

 

On Sunday last, at Ludgvan, Walter Reed, aged 51 years.

 

On Wednesday last, at Towednack, Mrs. Christian William, aged 60 years.

 

At Helston, on Sunday last, after a short illness, the lady of T. P. Tyacke, Esq., aged 27 years.  As a mother she was admired, as a wife she was adored, and as a friend she was esteemed; and her loss will be deeply lamented amongst her numerous friends and acquaintances.

 

At Brill, in Constantine, on Monday last, the wife of Mr. Tonkin, shoemaker, aged 22 years.

 

At Helston, on Wednesday last, the wife of Mr. Alexander Matthews, aged 41 years.

 

At Fowey, on the 22nd instant, the infant daughter of Mr. E. Thomas.

 

On Saturday last, at Pennare, St. Goran, advanced in years, Mr. James Liddecote.

 

At St. Stephens in Branwell, on Tuesday last, where he had been for the benefit of his health, Mr. H. Lowry, of St. Mawes, aged 66 years.

 

At Biscovey, St. Blazey, on Tuesday last, Mr. Matthew Bovey, aged 66 years.

 

At St. Austell, on Monday last, suddenly, Fanny, wife of Mr. Matthew Kelly, confectioner, &c., aged 69 years.
