By order of the Boards, CHARLES PRESSLY, Stamps and Taxes Secretary NEWS - Marriages Under the New Act - Influence of Mr. O'Connell - Penalties for Unduly Registering BMD BANKRUPTS - W. H. Page, linen draper, Plymouth LOCAL NEWS Seizure - On Wednesday morning, an old fishing boat, name unknown, was found wrecked near the Wherry Mine, near Penzance. The crew had beached her in the night, landed a cargo of brandy, and left her to her fate. About 40 tubs of spirits have been found by the revenue force concealed in some fields adjoining. The St. Enoder Robbery - According to the following paragraph, which we copy from a Bristol paper, the boy Nettle, who took part in this robbery, has been detected: On Monday a man and a boy, very coarsely attired, were observed at a public house in Bristol, spending money very lavishly, and the man was overheard, saying to some girls, "get home that boy, he's got a swag of gooters (lots of sovereigns) in his possession, and you can give me half." Information was promptly given, and they were taken into custody. The boy, John Nettle, confessed that he was servant to a miller named Courties, residing in the neighbourhood of Truro, and that he had assisted a man to break into and rob his master's premises. Upon the completion of the plunder, the man gave him £30 as his share of the booty, and desired him to leave Cornwall, threatening him with death if he should disclose any of the facts. The fellow in whose company he was when apprehended, having only picked him up on the road, was discharged, and the boy has been detained with the greater part of the money; and as full particulars of the transaction have been transmitted to Cornwall, there is reason to believe that the principal offender will be brought to justice. Pilchard Fishery - It is feared that the late boisterous weather will be very injurious to the Pilchard fishery on this coast. The quantities taken at Fowey, our correspondent states, have not been sufficient to supply the inhabitants. The St. Ives people have, however, been more fortunate. On Tuesday last, a great number of shoals passed through the bay, when several seans shot and missed. The following is the quantity taken: Tremearne, Hichens, and Co., 550 hogsheads, the greater part landed; Wearne and Co., 2,000 hogsheads, about 650 landed. Our correspondent at that place, in his letter of Wednesday, states: it is now blowing a gale, at WNW and should it shift more to the northward, it will endanger the rest of the fish seans. |
