A small group of us have been working on Bryans for several years and we
have all come to believe being a descendant of the Eastern NC and SE VA
Bryan group is a curse! :) Why? Because there are so many burned and lost
records and this family was prolific. They are nearly impossible to figure
out. I haven't had time to work on them in over a year; however, I'll try
and respond to your questions.

There are LOTS of myths about the Bryans and who our John Bryan is.
We have found NO proof that Lady Alice Needham married William Bryan.
If you've got that, trash it.

Our John Bryan of Craven Co., NC who d. 1741 with the nuncup. will was
married to Alice Macque. There are records in Chowan Co, NC deed
abstracts by Margaret Hoffman that refer to him in a manner that indicates
he and Alice are married. John Bryan and Lawrence MacQue, father of Alice,
are in numerous records of Old Chowan and Bertie Counties, NC. Lawrence
was a shoemaker. I do not know the names of his wife and I've done no work
on the Macque line.

The 1818 Moses Griffin court case is a treasure trove of genealogical
information about these early families. It details the names of the
children of our John Bryan. I cannot find; however, any reference to the
wife of Lewis Bryan, son of John.

We THINK that John Bryan was the son of Lewis Bryan. This is based on
circumstantial proof only. We've more work to do on this line. Lewis was
the son of John Bryan the immigrant who came to Isle of Wight Co., VA in
the mid 1650s.

I hope this helps somewhat.

( I am told married Elizabeth Joyner)

Early Records of North Carolina, Volume V: Wills 1Dr. JOHN BRYAN
came from ISLE OF WIGHT, VA with his his father, WILLIAM, and
brother, NEEDHAM, and first settled in BERTIE, NC sometime around
1722. As a doctor, he had the opportunity to witness several death bed

for Edward Williams of Chowan Precinct; 14 Oct 1719 for Thomas Gilberd
of Chowan Precinct; 27 Feb 1733/14 for Henry Parkes of Craven Precinct;

Wit: ROB'T REDFORD, ARCHIBALD THOMPSON, ANN FRAZIER.
His Will was dated 14 Sep 1734 while he was "very weak in body," and was
probated in EDGECOMBE, NC in May 1735. An inventory of his estate
was taken by son-in-law, DAVID HOOPER and son, WILLIAM BRYAN,
on 18 Aug 1735. These two Johns have very similar date and places. But
neither (of their wills) JOHN list each others children, and the date of the
two wills are 7 years apart. So I have to believe that these are two different
John Bryan's. I wonder if you could help me and several others of my family
who know this, find this John Bryan (and his wife/s, and parents), who died
in Johnston Co.NC 31 Oct 1741 not 18 Aug. 1735.

This refers to 2 different John Bryans. The John Bryan in the original
query left a nuncupative will in Craven Co in 1741 and died the next day.
He named his children, no wife, and made his oldest daughter the guardian
of the minor children "being 3 in number." He was possibly in Craven Co.
as early as 1723. The last paragraph of Lawrence Macque's will says: Lastly
I constitute and appoint my dutyful son John Bryan and my loving daughter
alice Bryan and my loving friend Edward Bryan to be joynt executors and
executrix in this my last will and testament and do revoke and disanul all
former wills by me made and do pronounce and declare this to be my last
will and testament and have unto here put my hand and signed.

In Along The Neuse, this writer presented information based on an
application approved by the Colonial Dames XVII Century in 1986
which showed that John Bryan married Elizabeth Joyner, daughter of
Bridgeman Joyner. Subsequent Joyner research by others yields
information that disproves this relationship. Other research indicates
that John Bryan was married to Alice Macque, daughter of Lawrence
Macque of Bertie County, North Carolina. Consequently, this section
should be considered as a correction to Along The Neuse.

Catherine Taylor Mentioned in 1754 Will of Richard Barfield

"Catrrn Taler" was a daughter in the will of Richard Barfield, dated 1
May 1754. A granddaughter "Tebeth Taler" was also mentioned. This
Catherine Taylor seems to have been the wife of William Taylor of Duplin

_______________
From research by Fletcher Freeman on the Barfields -

Around October Court, 1729, Henry Baker sued William Moore and Richard
Barfield (II), probably as executors for the tobacco, pork, and money he didn't
collect from Richard I earlier. This "case returned executed and is now discont. by
the plaintiff's atty it being agreed."
About February 1738, Richard Barfield II was appointed to work on a road crew
to rebuild the bridge over Maherring (Meherrin) Creek at Jarnagan's ferry. His
company and three others refused to work on the bridge and were fined 10 pounds
each "unless they show cause". This controversy went on for three years with
Richard Barfield still overseer, and still threatened with the fine for neglect in
collecting money for the bridge, until November 1741, when another overseer was
named in Barfield's place according to the Bertie County NC Court Minutes, Book
1 and 2 by Haun. The Colonial Records of North Carolina shows that Richard
Barfield petitioned for warrants to 500 acres in Duplin County on November 19,
1744. These lands were part of the McCulloh grant.
"The State Records of North Carolina, Vol. 22", reflects Rich'd Bearfeild on " A list
of what men attended upon the alarm at Wilmington the 4 Sep'r, 1748, belonging to
Capt'n John Sampson's comp'ie, and the number of days of attendance. " This
apparently dealt with a militia company that repulsed a Spanish attack on
Brunswick and Wilmington North Carolina in New Hanover County. Brunswick
and Wilmington are located at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, southeast of
Duplin County. On October 6, 1752, Edward Outlaw and wife Patience sold 250
acres on North East Swamp to Richard Barfield in Sampson-Duplin County, and
on October 10, 1753, Richard Barfield witnessed a deed for land on the Rattlesnake
Branch of the NE Cape Fear River in Sampson-Duplin County from Edward
Rollings to Solomon Barfield.May 1, 1754: Richard Barfield II, died in Duplin
County North Carolina. He was survived by sons - Henry, Jesse and Solomon -
and daughters - Mary Barfield, Beth Barfield, Ann Grady and Cathren Taler - and
a granddaughter, Beth Taler. He was married to Mary Evans in 1720.(162)

It appears that there are more than one Richard Barfield. The Richard Barfield 1st. & Richard Barfield 2nd. are aligned per information revealed in un-documented sources from the internet. Much speculation exists in an attempt to place each in the correct order. Readers should beware that this information is not documented in many instances and should be guided accordingly. I am trying to turn up more helpful information on the Barfields in NC in the early 1700s, and I found your data concerning Barsheba Barfield and her parents, Richard and Mary Evans Barfield. If you have any supportive data for the children of the Richard Barfield whose will is dated 1728 (I have a copy of the will.) I would appreciate very much being able to adduce some leads which will help me open up some source of information.
I am a direct descendant of "An" Barfield, who married William Grady and is actually the child of another Richard Barfield, whose will is dated 1754, who appears to be the son of the Richard who was married to Mary Evans. Your listing of offspring for Richad and May does not match the data in the will, where the children's names are given as: Richard, William, James, Henry, Solomon, Thomas, and Barsheba. A son-in-law is named, apparently indicating that there was another dtr who died. He was cited as Wm. More. This is supported by a deed in Duplin County, I believe it was, wherein Richard Barfield and Mary Evans conveyed a tract of land ". . . with love to our son-in-law, Wm. More." Barsheba's husband was apparently John Melton.

Research by Fletcher Freeman on the Barfield's, and showing
evidence that John Barefeild is Richard Barfield's father -

The first reference to Richard Barefield is on April 20, 1694, when
he received 90 acres in the Up. Par. of Nansemond County, Va.
for the transport of 2 persons. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, Patent
Book 8, p. 389) This is 41 years after Jon Barefeild arrived in
Virginia which would indicate that Richard was much younger than
Jon and hence possibly a son.
On November 14, 1694, a James Loadman of Perquimans Pct.,
North Carolina died and left a will naming as legatees Jane Barfeild
and Richard Barfeild of Somerton, Va. James was apparently a
Quaker, having donated land for a Quaker meeting house. James
lived near Sumerton (approx. 10 miles) and left some of his
property to other known Quakers. Quaker records of the
Sumerton area meeting around 1700 and earlier indicate that a
Robert Brasseur, of Virginia, was also a Quaker. This may be the
same Robert Brasseur who brought Jon Barfield to America.
Hence both Richard and John may have been Quakers, or at least
had strong affiliation with Quakers in the community.
The assumption that John Barfield was Richard Barfield's father is
based on the fact that they both lived at Sumerton in Nansemond
County, Virginia, there were no other Barfields in Virginia another
than Thomas as late as 1704, and Jon was substantially older than
Richard. It should be noted that Richard did not name any of his
children "John" but he did have a son "Thomas" according to his
will. He also had a brother, "John" who later lived in Onslow, N.C.

April 17, 1703, Rich Barfield witnessed a Power of Attorney
ececuted by Henry Baker of Virginia, a copy of which is in "The
State Records of North Carolina".
Richard and John Barfield seem to have moved to North Carolina
in 1715. There on 16 April 1715 (at one point mistakenly
transcribed 1719) Charles and Elliner Merrit and Peter Evins of
Chowan Prct. sold for 30 pds. to Richard Barefield "of Virginia"
280 acres joining ye mouth of Deep Branch on ye north west Side
of Deep Creek, witnessed by William Mixon, Peter (PE) Evins. On
31 Mar. 1718 James and Elizabeth Boon sold to Richard Barefield
250 acres on Chowan River, joining Peter Evens, the main road
and Gum Branch, (witnessed by John Gray, William Crawford).
The 1721 tax of Chowan lists Richard with 500 acres.
Bertie County was created from Chowan in 1722, and there we
find that Richard sold the 250 acres purchased from the Boons to
Edward Outlaw on 10 February 1723/4 (witnessed by George
Marsham, John Power), and the tract purchased from the Merritts
to William Reed on 1 January 1724. In the meantime he had on 1
April 1722 obtained a patent of 470 acres on the west side of
Ahoskey March, and on 9 February 1724 purchased another 200
acres there from Henry Baker. "Richard Barfield the elder" sold
100 acres on the south side of Ahoskey Marsh "out of Firebent's
patent" to Thomas Barefield Junior, Hen. Baker, John Molton), and
on 11 May 1725 Richard Barfield and wife Mary made gifts of land
to their son-in-law William Moore and grandson John Grady. In
July Court, 1724, William Gray sued Richard Barfield for "Trespass
on the case damun 50 pounds returned executed dismist.
"accourding to the N.C. Higher Court Minutes 1724-1730 by
Parker. In October Court, 1725, Richard and Thomas Barfield
were securities for John Molton of Bertie County, who was being
sued by Henry Baker for debt. On 1 February 1726, Richard
purchased another 300 acres "North West Side of Uper Horseky
Meadow" from John Speir. One of the witnesses was Henry Baker
who later sued him. At March Court, 1726, John Milton did not
appear so Thomas and Richard were held liable for 2112#
tobacco, 233# pork, 12 pounds, 7 shillings, 9 pence. In July Court,
1728, Henry Baker was still trying to collect.
November 22, 1728 : Richard Barfield died in Bertie County. He
was survived by his wife Mary, and sons - Richard, Solomon,
James, Henry, William and Thomas - and a grandson Richard,
according to Last Will & Testament.

Question - Was this Richard married twice? First to Jane
(Loadman?) and then to Mary ?

284. Jesse (Francis) Barfield (247) (162)(164) (165)(248) was born in
1738 in USA, North Carolina, Duplin Co..(162) He died on 22 Aug 1780
in USA, South Carolina, Kershaw Co., Camden. (164)(162) "Jessie... died
near the close of the (Revolutionay) War while driving beef-cattle to the
Patriot army. He was taken suddenly ill and died away from home,
although it was but a few miles distant."
(from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
This is similar to a story in Goodspeeds History of Tennessee which
indicates that Jesse B. Barfield and his son Frederick were in the Battle of
Camden South Carolina and that Jesse died at the home of a relative five
days after the Battle. There is also an application to General Mariion for
payment for a horse, saddle, and bridle made by Jesse's wife according to
Mr. Glen Barfield, a descendant of Jesse the Tory.
(Fletcher Freeman) He served in the military American Revolution in USA,
North Carolina. From research by Fletcher Freeman -
A Jesse Barfield, along with a Solomon Barfield (probably his brother)
and a James Barfield are shown as enlisted men in the 2nd regiment of
South Carolina at the Battle of Ft. Sullivan, later called Ft. Moultrie, in
Charleston in 1776 at which battle the British were defeated. Francis
Marion was the commander of this regiment.
There appears to have been two or more Jesse Barfields living and dying
in close proximity to each other during this time period. One was a Tory
Loyalist who fought against Francis Marion and one appears to have been
a soldier serving under Marion.
The book "Soldiers, Sailors, and Descendants" shows Jesse Barfield as a p
atriot and gives the dates 1738 thru 1780 and shows that he was married to
a Sara Castillo.

These guys detailed in a new book from the Sampson County Historical
Society........Jerome

BARFIELD, Solomon, Martyr, North Carolina.
Solomon Barfield was not in the Militia. He was born on June 28, 1765
and shot by a Tory neighbor named Wilson and some of the Bass boys
in 1779 at age 14. He was the son of Jesse and Sarah Costello Barfield.
During the Revolutionary War, when Frederick was quite a young man
and still living in North Carolina, he and his brother Solomon were fired
upon by in their corn field by some of their Tory neighbors. He was
seriously wounded and Solomon shot down, mortally wounded. Frederick
managed to get home, leaving his brother, as he thought, dead. Late in the
night the family heard someone moaning as if in distress. Some of them
went out to investigate and found Solomon crawling slowly and painfully
toward the house. They carried him in and did what they could to relieve
his sufferings, but he died before morning dawned. Frederick recovered and
lived many years, suddenly dying of apoplexy

An interesting note from the research of Fletcher Freeman -
January 1792 Frederick Barfield is named as the administrator of the estate
of Jesse Barfield who had an orphaned minor child named Solomon.

?? Which Jesse with son Solomon is this? Frederick's father died 1780, and
mother 1828, would his younger brother Solomon be called an orphan by
the courts in 1792? Maybe this is the Solomon that married Sarah Crow? .

1 NOTE Solomon was killed by the Torries. See the North CarolinaGeneral Society Journal V:247.

He never married.
