Welcome To The Genealogy World Of William Dale Barfield

Cornelius RYALL Sr. [Parents] was born in of Sampson,North Carolina. He died about 1745. He married Elizabeth BARNSFELD about 1710.

WILLIAM ROYAL OF COLONIAL SAMPSON COUNTY c1725-1795 by Jerome Tew
Cornelius Royall Sr. died around 1745 and John then living in Edgecombe County, returned to Pasquotank County to learn that not only had his father died but that his brother William had dissolved the estate and he, John, got nothing.

Cornelius Royal Sr. had four children. Elizabeth Royal was born before the 1721 will of Anne Barnsfeld was wrote. She and Cornelius Jr. were old enough in 1724 to be deeded their father's 300 acres of land. John was old enough in 1741 to be in Edgecombe County. Cornelius Royal Jr.
died in his youth. William Royal was the youngest of this family. Elizabeth Royal married Charles West before 1750. Elizabeth Barnsfeld Royal died after her husband Cornelius Ryall Sr.

There are two references to William Barnsfeld of interest. he was listed as a witness to a will in Pasquotank County in 1704. A William Barnsfeld is listed in Isle Of Wight County Va. in 1693. This is not a common name and thus one may conclude that this William Barnsfeld is the husband of Anne Barnsfeld and the father of Elizabeth Barnsfeld Royall and the likely source of the name William for William Royall.

These findings rule out Owen Royal of Sampson County as a brother to William and John Royal. Owen was likely the son of Owen Royal that was in Bertie County in 1739. Based on family names, Owen Royal Sr. was likely a brother to Cornelius Royal Sr. and their mother was a Hardy.
JEROME DEAN Tew -1993-

THE ROYAL ROAD TO SAMPSON COUNTY
by Jerome Tew
In 1719, Cornelius Royal was granted 300 acres of land in Pasquotank County, N.C. In 1724 John lost his
Indian slave and filed a complaint in Edenton.

In 1724, Cornelius deeded his son Cornelius Jr. and daughter Elizabeth
Ryall 300 acres of land to be split between them. This appears to be his
only family. The 300 acres had been obtained in 1719 by patent.
Therefore, Cornelius Ryall had married Elizabeth Barnsfeld about 1710. His
oldest children were Cornelius Ryall Jr. and Elizabeth. In a 1752
Pasquotank County document two other children are named as John and William
Royall. This document lists all four children of this family. Cornelius
Royal Jr. had died young.

Elizabeth BARNSFELD [Parents] died Unknown. She married Cornelius RYALL Sr. about 1710.

Look in her husbands notes for reference to her

They had the following children:

  F i Elizabeth ROYAL
  M ii Cornelius ROYAL Jr..
M iii John ROYAL was born in of Sampson,North Carolina. He died after 1773.

WILLIAM ROYAL OF COLONIAL SAMPSON COUNTY c1725-1795 by Jerome Tew
The Sampson John and William Royal are not proven as brothers by Sampson County records. John did however sell land to William in 1773.

To identify the father of William and John Royal we need to go back to Pasquotank County and Cornelius and Elizabeth Ryall. In 1724 Cornelius deeded his son Cornelius Jr. and dau. Elizabeth Ryall 300 acres of land to be split between them. This appears to be his only family. The 300 acres of land had been obtained in 1719 by patent.

However, by 1752 things had changed. John Royall filed a motion with the court against his brother William Royall. John identifies that his sister Elizabeth Royall had married Charles West. His complaint goes on to say that when his father died, William took inventory of his father's estate and without an order of the court, divided the estate with Elizabeth West. He went on to say that his brother Cornelius Jr. had died and that the land (300 acres) given him and Elizabeth should now be divided into thirds. Cornelius Royall Jr. apparently had no issue at death. Cornelius Royall Sr. died around 1745 and John then living in Edgecombe County, returned to Pasquotank County to learn that not only had his father died but that his brother William had dissolved the estate and he, John, got nothing.

No doubt the relationship between John and William Royal was strained in those early days. The petition to the court by John Royal did not resolve the issue and John sued William Royall in April of 1753. This issue remained open for some time and it is not known if the issue was ever settled to John Royal's notion. This may be the reason that the Sampson County records do not show a relationship between these brothers. They were brothers but they were not buddies in the early years. William was ordered to pay up and divide, but did he divide with John?

William, John, and Owen Royal, the three main Royal clans in Sampson County all had children named Hardy Royal. In fact Hardy Royal has been seen in more places than Elvis. Hardy is the most common given name in all of the Sampson Royal family and it is unique to the Royals of Sampson County and their descendants. It does in fact create a problem, in some cases it is hard to tell which Hardy Royal was which.

The Sampson County Royal family had a positive connection to the Hardy family around 1700. It is likely that William Royal and John Royal had a wife that was a Hardy. It would appear then that Cornelius Sr. above married Elizabeth Barnsfeld. Two 1741 Edgecombe Co. deeds for John Royal have John Hardy as a witness. Hardy's wife was named Elizabeth.

Elijah Ballard Hood
Interview 11 July 1963 by Bertha Hood in Ukiah, California.

Description: Tall broad shoulders. Height 6 ft 2 in. Skinny and rawboned.
Very black hair. Black eyes. Sober person. Mothers coloring and his fathers
looks.
Raised in North Carolina until after Civil War. He was in his teens when
they moved to Florida and then to Cochran, Georgia and finially to home his
father bought.
He didn't like school. His father wanted him to to get more education. He
wanted to work. He said, "His freedom as a farmer was more to him than wages
was." He was a very good farmer. Very strict and would let them wear anything
but somber plain clothes. The boys could never wear shirts unbuttoned and if
tore something. They had to go and get patched right then. Hired school
teachers in home until they had free school. Dad (Sam Hood) was around 15
years old when they had school. But his father kept him home to work while
older children went and then they all left and he didn't get much schooling.
But he (Elijah) taught his children to shoot well, because so many
animals wild and tame went "mad". They had to carry a gun everywhere, even
in the field to work for protection against this menace.
He accepted the Elders in his home. There were mostly Christian
Science, Baptist and some Methodist.
They build a public school at Rawley, Ga. (1/2 mile from where they
lived)., then when Elders came they'd hold church one Sunday and then on
the other Sunday Christian Science held church. Elijah didn't join church for
5 or 6 years after elders came. He was a hard shell (or primitive) baptist.
He liked to fish a lot, but not hunting. In the summertime when crops
were laid by they would take several wagons and men and fish and camp
several weeks at a time. Okmilgee river, Logpan Lake, and the mouth of
Limestone creek.
The family big celebration was 4th of July. The community would go
seining for fish and have big fish frys.
We workout for our spending money and dress clothes.
Each Monday morning he laid out certain amount of work for each child
to do during the whole week. If they worked hard and long and got it done by
Wednesday they could go out and work for spending money. They'd help at
odd things around the community.
He was very strict about who his girls went with and how they acted.
He never had a buggy for his family and never let his children use any
animals on Sunday. He said it was against the Lords will to use the animals
on Sunday for pleasure or anything.
He was well read in Bible. Could quote much scripture.
He was a great reader and took lots of magazines, Agricultural Magazine,
Story Magazine (written in Maine (?), Improvement Era, LDS Elders Journal,
called Liahona. They were good readers.
He was well educated. Could have gone on further but didn't want to.
Could read and write a good hand.

Never had a chance to go to school. Born just before Civil War and was
when South was building up after war. Could read a little but not write. Her
father arthritis during Civil War and was in Army went down to Darian
(pronounced Dairy - Ann) and worked in salt works during the war. When
Sherman came through they heard him and dynamited the salt works and
escaped in the forest. (Sherman began his march on 15 Nov 1864 and ended
in Savannah, Ga. 21 Dec 1864).

was married.

animals from drinking water right from that well.

This home was in Dodge county one mile north of Younkers.

Very pleasant disposition and lovely singing voice, Very beautiful when
young, Had the prettiest natural wavy auburn hair. Very high forehead.

She was a Baptist. When she was 17 years old she went to a dance and
the church cut her off because she wouldn't say she was sorry and never
joined another church until L.D.S.

Lots of Christian Science people in neighborhood. Once dad
(Elijah Ballard) was very sick and called members from the church. Brother
John T. Bates and his wife and they for dad and he was healed.

They were the first family to join the church when L.D.S. missionaries
came around. But his father-in-law was really angry about it and one time
was hiding in bushes to kill Elder Green. Said he would shoot a hole so big
a buzzard a buzzard could fly right through him and not get a drop of blood.
But as he was hiding in the bushes a man came along and asked him what he
was doing and he said he was going to kill the Elder (Mormon) for baptizing
his son-in-law (John T. Bates), The man talked him out of it and took him
home.
