BIOGRAPHY: The 1870 Census for Mayfield Milam County Texas lists Hugh as Head of Household (age 24) and a farmer. His mother Mary Riley Barfield is listed as housekeeper (age 46). Mary's husband Jesse Barfield is not listed at all nor is the Census marked that Mary is a widow. It is assumed Jesse Barfield never went westward, but possably died in the Polk County Texas area between 1862-1870. Several of Hugh's brothers are living with him and his mother Mary as follows:
