The Rivers family first settled in Virginia.

Most of the Rivers family then moved from VA to AL via NC and TN. They arrived in southwest Alabama about 1815.
NOTE: The ancestry of Rev. Joel Rivers has not been proven.
- Papers of Adele Rivers suggest that Joel was born in England and Lord Thomas Rivers of England is Joel's father.
- Family Group Sheets prepared by W. Kirkpatrick suggest that Robert and Hannah Rivers of Prince George Co., and Dinwiddie Co.,
Va. are Joel parents.
- Your Inheritance, by Robbie Lee Gillis Ross, p. 232 suggests that Richard and Mary Rivers of Brunswick Co. Va. are
Joel's parents and that Robert and Hannah Rivers are Joel's grandparents.

- Furnished a gun for the Southern Expedition Militia during the
War for Independence.
- Lay minister in the newly formed Methodist Episcopal Church.
- - Built the first Methodist Episcopal church in Claiborne, Alabama, in 1817 at his own expense.
- Joel (No 194) and his son Mason Rivers (No 104) were signatories to the
Oct, 1817 petition to Congress to prevent Mississippi from extending its boundary into the Alabama territory.
