DROPPED DEAD OF HEART FAILURE
Thomas Marshal, Well Known Resident Passed Away Saturday Morning
This community was not prepared for the news that Thomas Marshal was dead, when it came early Saturday morning. He was well know to be somewhat failing in health but was about as usual up to the time of his death. He called at the Enterprise office for his paper the night before after supper, took it home and retired that night feeling rather better than usual. In the morning he got up to build the fires and it was while thus occupied that he dropped to the floor and died with out a struggle before Mrs. Marshal could get to him.
Thomas Marshal was born near Hanover in Carroll county, Ohio on October 6, 1847 and came to Iowa with his parents in 1866. They lived on a farm south of Brighton until 1882 when he and his mother moved to Brighton which has been his home ever since except a short time when they lived at Rock Island and later at Eldon. Twenty five years ago he run the mail and express wagon here. We have known him for more than thirty years and have always found him to be an honorable man and a good quiet, unassuming citizen.
In 1890 he was united in marriage to Miss Juliette Alkire, who with their one child, Mella Mae, wife of C. G. Picken, of St. Charles, Iowa, lives to mourn his death.
He united with the Christian Church in 1868, being baptized by Rev. J. K. Cornell, then pastor of the church on Feb. 28 of that year. He has remained a consistent member ever since holding a high position in the councils of the church at the time of his death.
The funeral was held at the Christian Church at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and he was laid to rest in the Brighton Hill Crest cemetery.
