July 1942

Lulia May Howell

Lulia May Howell, daughter of Thomas and Julia Walker, was born May 1, 1869, and departed this life July 8, 1942, at the age of 73 years, two months and 8 days.

She was born near Boston and spent almost all her life in Washington County. She was married to Seth Howell Nov. 1, 1891. To this union three children were born: Leo T. of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Nora Pendry of Danville, Ill.; Mrs. Ruth Morgan of Orleans. She became afflicted about a year ago. All human agencies were exhausted in her behalf but all to no avail as death came peacefully at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, July 8. Through all her suffering she was very patient and resigned to go, but expressed her regrets to leave her husband and children. She was a loving wife and devoted mother as through the years she labored to do her part to maintain a good home. She always stood for high morals and was never disposed to accept some of the more modern trends and ways.

She united with Conoway Chapel Methodist church when a youth and afterwards transferred to the Weir Memorial church at Salem. So long as she was able she was a regular attendant of Sunday school and church services and was especially interested in her Sunday school class. For some weeks before her critical illness, she began to definitely seek the Lord in saving power, and during family prayer, being conducted by Mr. Howell and daughter Nora, she was clearly converted and gave a very definite testimony. From that time on, so long as conscious, she repeatedly spoke of her hope of Heaven and exhorted others to meet her there. She leaves to mourn her departure, besides her husband and three children, 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, two sisters, one brother, besides other relatives and a host of friends.

She will be greatly missed by her husband, children and other relatives, but we humbly bow to God's will.

Services were held July 10 at the Weir Memorial Methodist church, the Rev. Gilbert H. Curry officiating, assisted by the Rev. E. C. McKinney. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.
