Descendants of Humphrey White

 

Humphrey White  was born about 1803 in Ireland (per his death certificate), and died March 12, 1893 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  He married Sarah nee' (very possible Dowling) about 1836 most likely in Ireland.  Sarah was born according to early census records about 1815 in Ireland, and died about 1873 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  Children born to Humphrey and Sarah are as follows:  John, Margaret, Hannah, Bridget, William, Humphrey Jr., and Theresa. 

 

John White was born about 1838, most likely Ireland, although some census records indicate New York.  By working with and following the census records we feel he may be the John White who married Sarah Bilyew on April 12, 1781 in Christian County, Illinois.  No further information at this time, although he was found on census records in Colorado in the household of his sister Margaret (White) and brother-in-law, John Holland.

 

Margaret White was born in August 1841 in New York.  She married John Holland on February 18, 1868 in Macon County, Illinois.  John Holland was born in February 1838 in Ireland.  Children born to the union of Margaret White and John Holland are as follows:  Sarah A. born about 1869 who married George V. Peake on June 1, 1892 in Macon County, Illinois; Mary A. born about 1871 who married Lee Andrew Smith on May 9, 1893 in Macon County, Illinois; Theresa born in April 1876; and John E. Holland born in August 1877.

 

Hannah White was born about 1844 in New York, and most likely the Hannah who married a Joseph Prince on August 31, 1873 in Christian County, Illinois.  No further information at this time.

 

Bridget White was born about 1846 in New York.  Nothing further has been found on Bridget past the 1860 census where she is still living in her parents household in Christian County, Illinois.  No further information at this time.

 

William White was born in July 1849 in Illinois (?).   He married Caroline Huffman on August 21, 1873.  She was born June 1853 in Ohio.  Children born to William and Caroline are as follows:  Harry E. born May 1874, James M. born September 1875, Eugene born June 1880, Georgia born October 1882, Alonzo born October 1885 and Homer born August 1888.  Since this has been accumulated through census records, and according to the date of birth of this particular William White, I am showing for the time being, until proven if the correct person.  We do know that Humphrey & Sarah had a son William during this time frame.

     

Humphrey White, Jr. was born April 10, 1850 in New York and died April 9, 1915 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  (Obit Here)  He was married February 29, 1872 to Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lawler, a daughter of Patrick Lawler & Mary White.  Lizzie was born February 5, 1852 in Queens County, Dublin, Ireland and died March 15, 1922 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  Children born to the union of Humphrey & Lizzie are as follows:  Arthur Joseph, Catherine "Kate", Elizabeth (aka Lydia), Anna T.,  John Henry, William Joseph, Mary Frances (aka Mamie), and Maggie.  Pictured on right, Humphrey White, JR. and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lawler White.

 

a. Arthur Joseph, Sr. was born March 18, 1875 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois and died May 13, 1950 in Sumner, Pierce County, Washington. He was married to:  (1) Matilda Geer (either a widow or divorcee with 2 children) on July 3, 1901 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois,  and they were divorced January 28, 1911 at Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.; (2) Elsie Hilsabeck Huffer after 1911 but prior to 1917 - no record of this marriage has been found to date - and she died March 28, 1935 in Stewardson, Shelby County, Illinois; (3) Isal Gertrude Wilcox, the young widow of Roma James Waughtel, on June 18, 1936 in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Illinois. Isal was born January 23, 1913 in Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, and died May 16, 1982 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington. b.  Catherine "Kate" was born January 18, 1877 in Illinois and died in June 1966, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  She was married (1) L. S. Baker, (2) J. Varady.

 

c.  Elizabeth "Lydia" was born about 1878 in Illinois.  She was married to Pearl Gosnell on April 23, 1902, and was born about 1878.  Children born to the union of Elizabeth & Pearl are as follows, namely: Helen about 1903, Dorothy about 1908 and Evylyn about 1910.

 

d.  Anna T.  was born November 10, 1882 in Illinois, and died March 13, 1942 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  She married Frederick A. Doolin who was born circa 1880 in Illinois.  Children born to the union of Anna and Frederick are as follows:  Harold about 1908, Paul about 1912, Ruth about 1916 and Ilene about 1918.

 

e.  John Henry was born November 30, 1883 in Illinois and died May 19, 1928 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  He married (1) Gussie R. Orkowski on October 17, 1906.  Gussie was born May 10, 1888 in Germany, and died August 03, 1916 in Decatur, Illinois; (2) Ida May "Mamie" Patrafka on February 12, 1918, daughter of Rudolph Patrafka and Mollie nee' ?  Mamie was born June 17, 1893, and died January 1982.  Children born to the union of John Henry and Mamie are as follows:  Henry John about 1920 and Gerald Louis on August 28, 1924.  Pictures in this paragraph are of John Henry, right, and John Henry and his wife, left.

 

f.  William Joseph was born June 20, 1885 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois and died April 3, 1960 in Decatur, Macon County Illinois.  He was married on December 19, 1907 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois to Wilhelmina "Minnie" Thomalla who was born circa 1889 in Sieben, Germany, a daughter of August Tomalaka and Wilhelmina Overaski.  Minnie died May 27, 1976 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  Children born to the union of William White and Minnie Thomalla are as follows:  Cecil Elmer, Bernice E., Dorothy M., and Betty Frances.

fa.  Cecil Elmer was born September 30, 1909 in Decatur, Macon County,  Illinois and died July 01, 1966, Decatur, Macon County,  Illinois.  He was married on June 30, 1924 to Myrtle Irene Schrader who was born June 27, 1908 in Christian County, Illinois, a daughter of Aaron Schrader and Olive Jane Workman, and died February 5, 2005 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  A son was born to Cecil & Myrtle, residing in Illinois.

 

fb.  Bernice E. was born November 27, 1911, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois and died March 28, 1980, Miami Beach, Florida.  She was married to William H. Laffan who was born circa 1899 and died October 23, 1970, Miami Beach, Florida.  No issue.

 

fc.  Dorothy M. was born August 7, 1915 Decatur, Macon County, Illinois and died November 10, 1995 at Lincoln Manor Nursing Home, Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  On August 30, 1941 at Union, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Cecil Edward "Brownie" Brown who was born in Vernon, Illinois and died November 24, 1961.  No issue.

 

fd.  Betty Frances was born about 1927 and died June 10, 1989.  She was married to Edward J. Mulligan.  Betty & Edward were the parents of 6 children, all living.

g.  Mary Frances "Mamie" was born in May 1888 and died January 30, 1980 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. She was married to Bernard D. Davern on January 14, 1914.  He was born May 09, 1885 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, and died September 06, 1947 in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  Children born to the union of Mamie & Bernard are as follows:  Bernard D. Jr. born November 3, 1914 and died November 19, 1993; Mary Elizabeth who was born December 6, 1916 and died December 3, 2004; Frances born December 11, 1919; William who was born circa 1921; Alice who was born circa 1925; and John R. Davern who was born about 1928.

 

h.  Margaret 'Maggie' was born prior to 1893 and died December 13, 1893 (see obit).

Theresa Agatha White was born December 8, 1848 Jacksonville, Illinois, and died April 16, 1921 at St. Mary's Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri.. She married John Krebs, who was born about 1848, and they had two known sons, Michael born November 19, 1877 and John Humphrey born August 16, 1879.   (see Kreb murder trial).
