Dorothea (Alkire) Dawson

Mt. Sterling, Ohio
March 21, 1876

Mrs. Dorothea Dawson died at the residence of her son, Perry Dawson, Esq., at Five Points, Monroe Township, on 21st inst., aged nearly 86 years. She was born in Kentucky, April 3d, 1790, and was a daughter of Adam Alkire, who removed to Ohio and settled in the neighborhood of Mt. Sterling, Madison county, about 1800. In 1814, she married Samuel R. Dawson, in his day one of the prominent men of the western part of Pickaway county, and once County Commissioner. They located at Five Points, which was ever afterwards her home. She was a widow nearly thirty years, her husband dying June 12, 1846. She was the mother of nine children, one of whom died in infancy, and the eldest Jackson, left home many years ago, and it is not known whether he is living or dead, when last heard of being near Cleveland, O. The surviving children are Perry Dawson, James Dawson, Mrs. Mary Parker and Mrs. Catherine Long, of Douglass county, Iowa, and Mrs. E. S. McClintock, of Circleville.

The deceased was a sister of Michael H. Alkire, dec'd, who was Sheriff of Pickaway county, and of her brothers and sisters surviving, one sister Mrs. Elizabeth Leasenby, resides in Darby township, this county, brother and sister in Iowa, one brother in Illinois, and another brother supposed to be somewhere in Indiana.

Mrs. Dawson dislocated her hip, in November, 1870, and since then has been unable to walk. She was an estimable woman, possessing numerous good traits, and was highly regarded. Her remains were interred on 23d inst., in Mt. Sterling Cemetery.
