Salem Democrat

Dora Robertson Davis

Elvira Isadore Robertson, daughter of John Thompson and Malinda Goss Robertson, was born in Polk township, Washington county July 24, 1866 and passed from us at her home in Salem Feb. 11, 1945 after an illness of six weeks.

Early in life she moved with her parents to Crawford county where at the age of fourteen she became a member of the Church of Christ, having been baptized by her uncle, Charles M. Robertson.

Later the family moved to New Albany where on Dec. 20, 1888 she was married to Hesker Davis of Washington county and for thirty-six years she lived on a farm in Polk township. This union was blessed with three daughters, Lulie Davis, at home; Elsie, wife of Jesse Rodman, Salem; Mamie, wife of Elvis Boss, of Brownstown. On March 20, 1900 the husband died, leaving her to care for the children. Here the Christian training which she had received from her parents was the dominating influence in rearing her daughters.

Dora, as she was familiarly called was a kindly neighbor, ministering to the sick in every community where she lived. From the age of 13 throughout her life she led in singing and numerous are the occasions on which she sang at the last rites of friends and neighbors. She always maintained as her highest aim, the work of the church and her greatest desire was to be a Christian. After moving to Salem in 1924 she placed her membership with the Church of Christ there and ever supported the truth as taught in God's word. She attended all church services regularly and took an active interest in Bible study and the song service. The last time she ever left her home was to attend prayer meeting.

She will be sadly missed in the home, in the church and in the neighborhood where she lived. She loved little children and made friends with every child who lived near her.

She was the third of a family of twelve children. Of these, George Robertson and Mrs. Cletis Criswell of New Albany and Mrs. Nora Weir, Salem, survive. She is also survived by the daughters and two grandsons, Gareth and Marvin Lee Rodman, who she loved dearly.
