Descendants of William D. Wood

Generation One

1. William D.1 WOOD was born circa 1794 in Cornwallis, Kings Co, Nova Scotia.1 He married Olivia Hovey Williams on 23 Oct 1817 in Rawdon, Hants Co, Nova Scotia (St Paul's Anglican Church). He died on 29 May 1866 in Gardner's Creek, Saint John Co, New Brunswick ("On the 29th instant at his residence, Gardner's Creek, after a short but severe illness, Mr. William H. Wood, in the 72nd year of his age, a native of Cornwallis, N.S., and for the last 38 years a resident of this Province. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends."

His obituary listed him as William H. Wood, rather than William D. Wood. This writer has no idea if this was a mistake at the newspaper).2 He was buried in Brown's Cemetery, Fairfield, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

William Wood's early life remains a mystery at this point. No information has been located to prove his parentage, and nothing is known before his marriage in 1817, or, for that matter, until the family moved to New Brunswick ca 1825. One descendant, Allene P. Steves of Hillsborough, N.B., mentioned in a letter dated 6 September 1982 to this writer that she was told William Wood had been appointed to guide a band of settlers from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and that he liked the country so well he decided to move there as well. Although the marriage of William and Olivia took place in Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia, there is little substantiating evidence that either of their families were of that area. It is possible though that William was the son of Marbel Wood and his wife Rebecca Rawlins who died at Rawdon in 1813. Much more research is needed in this area!

The marriage record itself mentions that they were married with consent of guardians, rather than parents, leading one to think that possibly both had lost their parents by that time, or at least one of them. Birth records for their first three children have yet to be located in any towns in Nova Scotia.

On 21 October 1850, William and Olivia sold 105 3/4 acres land in the parish of Simonds to their son, Joseph Williams Wood, for the sum of five shillings "as well as other considerations of love and affection". This land was sold by the heirs of John Dewar to William Wood and William Benjamin " and by them divided on the thirteenth day September instant". On 17 September 1861, William and Olivia sold 40 acres to Joseph Williams Wood for forty pounds. It is probable that they turned their farm over to Joseph because they were to remain with him for their final years. Both William Wood and son Joseph Wood are listed in the 1865-1866 directory as of Gardner's Creek. Sometime in the late 1870's, Joseph probably sold the properties in Gardner's Creek and moved to Saint John. Further research of land records is needed in this area to verify the date.

The 1851 census of Simonds Parish states that he entered the province in 1826, so that year is confirmed both in the census as well as his obituary.

If William Wood was born in Cornwallis, the Loyalist settlement of Cornwallis was situated in the Northeast corner of what is now Kings County, including Cape Blomidon. Present villages include Glenmont and Canning. Horton was south of Cornwallis to the Hants County, Falmouth Township line.

Olivia Hovey WILLIAMS was born circa 1791 in Nova Scotia.3 She died circa 1872 in Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She was buried in 1872 in Brown's Cemetery, Fairfield, Saint John Co., New Brunswick. Family tales have always stipulated with great emphasis that Olivia was descended from Roger Williams of Providence, Rhode Island. Much research has taken place and this cannot yet be confirmed. Yest, every known branch that could be found - no matter what end of the continent, had all heard the story back from the 1880's and 1900, perhaps earlier. My own grandmother, back in the 1930's had a huge framed print depicting Roger Williams over the sofa.

This family has been well documented for many years, and yet, nothing has surfaced to substantiate the claim. So at this point, you will find neither an acceptance of the claim nor a denial. Time will tell.

This writer believes that Olivia Hovey Williams was a daughter of the Rev. Joseph Williams and Hannah Hovey who married 2 Jan 1770 at Horton, NS, or perhaps even the daughter of their eldest son Charles who was born 13 May 1771.

I will connect this family to them, but I have NO evidence other than what can be drawn from names and places to establish this as fact.

Children of William D.1 Wood and Olivia Hovey Williams were as follows:

Generation Two

3. Elizabeth2 WOOD (William1) was born circa 1822 in Nova Scotia. She married William Henry Benjamin on 30 Dec 1841 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She died after 1891 (info from 1891 census, Simonds).

William Henry BENJAMIN was born circa 1814 in Nova Scotia. He died on 20 Apr 1895 in Gardner's Creek, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. William Benjamin migrated to New Brunswick in 1836 from Nova Scotia according to the 1851 Simonds Parish census in Saint John County. According to stories in the family he was from Annapolis County, Nova Scotia and had traveled to New Brunswick with a brother, Joseph, who lived quite old but never married. He appeared on the census of 17 May 1891 in Simonds Parish, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (The 1891 census for Simonds Parish lists William, aged 74, as a Baptist, and a farmer, along with his wife, Elizabeth, then aged 68 years. Both William's and Elizabeth's parents were listed as both born Nova Scotia. At that time, they had only two of their children with them: Nathan, then aged 30, born New Brunswick and his older brother, Joseph, then 40 and his wife Elizabeth, then 35, whose parents were both born Ireland).

Children of Elizabeth2 Wood and William Henry Benjamin were as follows:

He died on 23 Sep 1910 in Gagetown, Queens Co, New Brunswick, at age 84 ("The death of Mr. Joseph W. Wood, one of St John's oldest citizens, took place at Gagetown, Friday afternoon. The deceased had been spending the summer at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Jas. A. McGaw. He was in the 85th year of his age, and leaves four daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. McGaw, Gagetown; Mrs. J.F. Cheyne, Westfield; Miss Hannah M. Wood, Pittsburg, PA; and Mrs. Olivia W. Anderson, of this city. Mr. William J. He appeared on the census of 1881 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (Joseph was of English origin, born NB and a laborer).10 He appeared on the census of 1901 in 207 Westmoreland Street, Saint John, Saint John Co., New Brunswick (The 1901 census shows that Joseph and his wife were living with their son, William Judson Wood, and his family).11

Elizabeth Brown HOWARD was born on 26 Jul 1826 in St Martins, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She was born on 12 Aug 1826 in Saint John Co, New Brunswick.12 She died on 4 Jun 1904 in W. She died on 19 Dec 1905 in Little Ridge, Albert Co, New Brunswick, at age 69. She was buried in Bayview Cemetery, Harvey Bank, Albert Co, New Brunswick.

In a written record dated 13 Dec 1963 by Josephine McLatchey, a Bartlett descendant, tells that "Sometime about 1900 your great great grandmother Bartlett, with considerable bitterness, told of the way her grandparents or great grandparents were treated by their New England neighbors who took all their valuables, even their silver spoons." There has always been that underlying story of the Wood and/or Williams families coming from New England, and even this branch of the family in Albert County has the same.

George Thomas BARTLETT was born on 12 May 1827 in New Brunswick. He died on 15 Jun 1903 in Little Ridge, Albert Co, New Brunswick, at age 76.19 He was buried in Harvey Bank, Albert Co, New Brunswick (Bayview Cemetery). By 1861, the New Brunswick census shows the Bartlett family was living at New Horton, Harvey Parish in Albert County. George was a ship carpenter and the family were all Baptists.

"Mrs. Nathan Benjamin, a widow, about 50 years of age was burned to death Saturday night when her home at Gradners Creek, near St Martins, about 25 miles outside Saint John was destroyed by fire. She had been left alone in the house and her death was not discovered until the fire burned itself out. A search of the ruins disclosed charred bones lying near what had the bottom of the stairway.

Mrs. Benjamin's two sons and daughter, who were living at the house were away from home for the evening. On their return about 10:30 PM they saw the fire and rushed to their home. By then the house was a little more than a burning heap of wood. The roof and walls having given away. When they could not find her they figured she may have wondered off into the woods, then the charred bones were discovered. It is believed she was on her way up the stairs to extinguish the fire but fell and had been overcome by smoke just a few feet from the front door.

Mrs. Benjamin had two daughters living in Saint John, Mrs. Ralph Hatfield (Mary Elizabeth), and Miss Estelle Benjamin, with J. Willard Smith's family; and one brother Daniel Jackson, 9 Hospital Street. They were all called yesterday to Gardner's Creek after word of the tragedy was received. Sargeant-Detective John T. Power drove to Gardner's Creek to view the scene of death and will return there this morning with coronor H.A. Porter, for an investigation.

The house was situated on Fairfield Road in an isolated postion. A factor that was probably responsible for the fire getting a big headway was the lateness of the hour, most of the neighbors being asleep. The origin of the blaze is unknown. Mrs. Benjamin has been a subject to fainting spells and it is believed that she may have taken one of these at the time of the fire and had been overcome by the smoke before recovering").
