1. David A.1 WAUGH was born in Ireland. He married Sarah Irving in Ireland.
Sarah IRVING was born in Ireland.
Children of David A.1 Waugh and Sarah Irving all born in Ireland were as follows:
2. Samuel2 WAUGH (David1) was born on 1 May 1843 in Ireland. He married Sarah Bingham, daughter of Andrew Bingham and Ann ? (--?--), on 7 Jun 1876. He died on 7 Nov 1926 in Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 83 (death record, Framingham, MA VR). He was buried on 9 Nov 1926 in Edgell Grove Cemetery, Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA.
When Samuel married in 1876 he was a resident of Newton and was a coachman by occupation. Later in 1876, he was a resident of Clinton, as that is where his son David was born. By 1882 Samuel and Sarah had removed to Philadelphia, where son William was born. But by 1898, the family had again returned to Clinton, and Samuel was employed by Clinton Worsted Company. From 1898 through 1902, Samuel was a boarder at 12 High Street in Clinton, and then moved back to Philadelphia. He had been a member of the Orange Lodge of Philadelphia.
By 1916 Samuel Waugh was living at 56 Cedar Street in Framingham, Massachusetts and was employed as a shoe worker. In 1926 he was retired and living at 102 Cedar Street with his daughter, Ann Bickford, when, at the age of 83, he was struck by a car at the corner of Hollis and Pine Streets on his way home from a days work as a precinct officer for Precinct 5. His injuries, along with further complications, caused his death on November 7th. He appeared on the census of 1880 in Clinton, Worcester Co, MA (Samuel was listed as aged 36, working in a cotton mill. Sarah was aged 41 and kept house).1
Sarah BINGHAM was born circa 1838 in Ireland. She died on 9 Oct 1889 in Philadelphia, Phildelphia Co, PA (death certicate, Philadelphia, PA). She was buried on 12 Oct 1889 in North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA. Sarah Bingham was aged 38 and a resident of Newton when she married in 1876, and it was her first marriage. The marriage record listed her name as Sarah M. Bigham, born Ireland, and her parents Andrew and Ann. There was no maiden name for her mother [MA Vitals, Newton, 1876, Vol 281, page 145, #36]. The marriage was performed by Alex Baikie, D.D.
She was originally buried in a lot owned by Samuel Best at the North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia. Samuel appears to have purchased that lot on 20 July 1886 just previous to the burial of Martha Best, aged 20 years, dated 26 July 1886. Sarah Bingham Waugh was then buried in grave #2 on 11 October 1889, then aged 50 years. Cause of death had been noted as cancer of the uterus. Since her son William was born in Philadelphia in 1882, it appears they were still living there in 1889 when she died.
On 27 July 1910, a Margaret Bingham, then aged 79 years, was interred in the back of Lot#90. Margaret was a native of Ireland, who died 26 July 1910. Her cause of death was listed as Rheumatic Arthritis, and her address was Ashbourne, Pennsylvania. Margaret's parents were Colin Thompson and Margaret Rowan. It is not known what her husband's name was at this writing (1981).
On 7 November 1925, Sarah Bingham Waugh's remains were removed from Philadelphia and reinterred in Framingham, Massachusetts. There is no indication as to whether she was related to Margaret Bingham buried in the same lot with her.
Children of Samuel2 Waugh and Sarah Bingham were as follows:
The 1880 census for Manchester, Hillsborough Co, New Hampshire lists James with other boarders. This must have been shortly before his marriage.
James Waugh and his family first appeared in the Lowell City Directory in 1895. In 1899 James had "removed to Clinton", but his family remained in Lowell. From 1899 to 1905, Mary Logan Waugh and her children were boarders at 134 Colburn Street. In 1900 James Waugh had moved from Clinton to Fitchburg, but from 1901-1905 he was employed by Lancaster Mills on 1 Green Street in Clinton. In 1905 he removed to Lowell, probably following his wife's death. In 1906, both Nellie and William Waugh were boarders at 207 Worthen Street, while their father James was a boarder at 111 Cushing Street.
In 1909, James was boarding at the house of Samuel Kendley on 179 Green Street, Clinton, and was again working at Lancaster Mills. From 1913-1920 he was boarding at 88 Green Street, Clinton. From 1922-1924 James was residing at the Alms House on 75 Woodlawn Street. By 1925 he had left Clinton. For a brief time he was living in North Carolina with his son, George and his wife, Grace. He then removed to Quincy, Massachusetts to live with his daughter Nellie Craig. He appeared on the census of 12 Apr 1930 in Tewksbury State Infirmary, Tewksbury, Middlesex Co, MA (James was listed as born Ireland, and aged 83).
Mary Elizabeth LOGAN was born in Mar 1859 in Ireland. She died on 12 Feb 1905 in Lowell, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 45. She was buried in St Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell, Middlesex Co, MA. Passenger lists for the port of Boston show a Mary Logan, arriving 7 August 1876, at age 18, aboard the SS RMS "Parthia"[List #32]. Her occupation was "weaver", and she was born in Ireland. The writer cannot be sure that this was the correct Mary Logan, but the year of arrival matches what she indicated in the 1900 census.
Census records for 1900 in Lowell, Massachusetts show that Mary Logan immigrated from Ireland in 1876. By 1900 she had given birth to eight children, but only four of those were still living. Two of these children remain unknown at this writing. The family was then living on Colburn Street.
Lot #36-28-3 at St Patrick's Cemetery was purchased by Mary Logan Waugh on 25 April 1899, after Gertrude's death. She arranged to have her son David removed from Edson and reinterred there as well. Mary Logan is buried there, along with Elizabeth McGowan Reay, Sadie's sister-in-law, who was interred may of 1907. The last interrment was Sadie Waugh Reay in 1910. All the graves are unmarked.
Mary Logan Waugh's death notice appeared in the Lowell Sun on Monday, 13 February 1905: "Mrs. Mary Waugh, aged 47 years, died at her home, 11 Broadway, yesterday. She leaves a husband, James, two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Ray (sic) and Miss Nellie Waugh, and two sons, William and George".
Her obituary: "Waugh - The funeral of the late Mary Waugh took place this morning at 8:30 o'clock from her late home, 11 Broadway, and was largely attended by relatives and friends of the deceased. The funeral cortege proceeded to St. Patrick's Church where a high mass of requiem was celebrated at 9:00 by Rev. John Gilday. The choir was in attendance and sand the Gregorian mass, and during the service appropriate selections were rendered by members of the choir.
There was a profusion of beautiful and appropriate floral offerings in evidence, showing the esteem in which the deceased was held by her many friends and acquaintances. The bearers were Messrs Patrick Donnely(?), John Sullivan, James and Robert Reay, James Henry, and John Kelleher. The interrment was in the Catholic Cemetery where the commital prayers were read by Rev. Fr. Gilday. The interrment was under the direction of Funeral Director Charles H. Malloy." She appeared on the census of 1880 in North Cambridge, Cambridge, Middlesex Co, MA (This may or may not be our Mary Logan, but she is listed as 20 years old, born Ireland, and living with the extended family of Louisa McCallar in North Cambridge. She was the only Mary Logan in MA or NH who fit the description).2
Children of James Irwin2 Waugh and Mary Elizabeth Logan were as follows:
David Waugh was originally buried at Edson cemetery in Lowell, Massachusetts. Several months after his sister Gertrude's death and burial at St Patrick's Cemetery, his remains were reinterred at St Patrick's as well.
Sarah was married in Newton Centre by D.L. Furber, Pastor of the First Church there. She was aged 25, and was then a resident of Brookline. Her parents were listed as David and Sarah, and she was born in Ireland.
The 1900 census record in Framingham shows that Sarah entered the United States in 1873 from Ireland. They then owned a farm on Capen Street. Four childen had been born to her by 1900, but none were living.
Her obituary said "Sarah Shilliedy, a resident of Framingham for over 60 years, passed away suddenly Sunday morning at th eHome for the Aged, where she had a resident for about a year. She was born in Ireland, April 30, 1849, the daughter of David and Sarah Waugh. Her husband, Thomas Shilliedy, passed away about nine years ago.
She is survived by three nieces, Mrs. Arthur S. Bickford, Mrs Ella Downey and Mrs. Nellie Craig off of Framingham, and three nephews, William J. and David A. Waugh of Framingham and William Waugh of Ohio. Funeral services will be held at the Cookson Chapel, Tuesday at 2:30 PM. Dr. William A. Knight will officiate. Interment will be in Edgell Grove Cemetery."
Thomas A. SHILLIEDY was born in Mar 1840 in Ireland (1900 census Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA). He died on 10 Jan 1929 in Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA, at age 88 (death certicate, Framingham, MA VR). He was buried in Framingham, Middlesex Co, MA (Edgell Grove Cemetery). Thomas' marriage record indicates he was aged 30, worked as a laborer, and had been born in Ireland, son of William "Shilday" and Susanna "Beegan".
The 1900 census taken at Framingham on the 14th June states that Thomas Shilliedy entered this country in 1872, and had remained an alien. He and Sarah could both read and write.
Children of Sarah2 Waugh and Thomas A. Shilliedy were as follows:
