Descendants of Job Stanley

Generation One

1. Job1 STANLEY was born circa 1760 in USA (died aged 93). He married (--?--) (--?--) before 1790. He married Isabella Dyer, daughter of Solomon Dyer and Isabella Eldridge, circa 1795 in Barnstable Co, MA. He died on 6 Jan 1854 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB (New Brunswick Courier, 14 Jan 1854). He was buried in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Cedar Hill Cemetery).

As of this writing, no early information is known about Job Stanley. By 1800, Job and wife Isabella were residents of Provincetown in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Job "Stanly" is listed in Provincetown, along with his wife and two daughters under the age of 10 in the 1800 census, but there are no land records in that area under the name of Stanley. Job did purchase land in Newmarket, New Hampshire in 1801, but sold it in 1802. The Memorial of Job Stanley dated at Saint John 3 May 1821 shows he was a farmer at that time and he and his family had resided on Lot #2 for nearly four years. At that time he had built a house, and a fish house, had cleared about five acres. Part of the cleared acreage was actually within Lot #3 but he hadn't realized at the time [NB Land Petitions film #F4191, p. 662].

Another document, dated April 1822, concerned Job's three eldest sons and their petition for land - Lots 7, 8, and 9, all part of the original grant to Charles Schoenwolf and others in 1786. Solomon was listed as ae 25, Job as 22 and Joseph as 20, all unmarried. These ages differ slightly from further census records. Also stated was that they had been in the province of New Brunswick "upwards of 14 years...[and] never receiving any allotment of land". They mentioned that this land had never been cultivated or cleared. Worth mentioning was the fact that both Solomon and Job signed their last name as STANDLEY and Joseph made his "mark".

The 1851 census at Simonds Parish [p. 45] show Job ae 87, a fisherman and wf Isabella ae 84, both born in the U.S. and entering New Brunswick in 1812.

(--?--) (--?--) died before 1795.

Children of Job1 Stanley and (--?--) (--?--) were:

Isabella DYER was born on 9 Aug 1773 in Truro, Barnstable Co, MA. She died after 1851 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB.

Children of Job1 Stanley and Isabella Dyer were as follows:

Generation Two

2. John2 STANLEY (Job1) was born circa 1790 in England. He married Mary Esther Woodbury before 1818. He died after 1881 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB.

It has not been verified that John Stanley is the son of Job, but it can not be overlooked as a possibility. However, it is unlikely that Isabella Dyer was his mother. All census records list John to be born in England. Of course, this would mean that Job Stanley had to have been in England about 1790. In any case, there was a definite relationship between Job Stanley and John Stanley.

In 1821, John and wife Esther were already in Grand Manan. The 1851 census for Grand Manan lists that he entered the province in 1818. Coincidentally, the 1821 Memorial of Job Stanley says he had been on the same particular lot almost 4 years. Might it possibly be that Job was of England, fathering John about 1790 - Perhaps his wife died in childbirth and John was left to be cared for by her family? Job Stanley came to Massachusetts, married Isabella, had several children while always moving on, looking for a good place to settle. Finally, after setting down roots on Lot 2 [NB Land Petitions, film #F4191, p. 662], he sent for his son to come be with him? Maybe John Stanley arrived in 1818, but seeing that opportunity was better on Grand Manan, moved there almost immediately. That would explain why petition for land was made by Job's other sons, Soloman, Job and Joseph. John was already settled in Grand Manan before 1821, and the sons made their petition for land in 1822.

In 1881, John and his son Warren, along with his wife and son, are found living in Mispec. Warren was the head of the household, and Solomon Stanley, aged 82 was living with them. Solomon must be John's brother.

Alot more research must go into John's background if we are to learn about Job Stanley.

Children of John2 Stanley and Mary Esther Woodbury all born in Grand Manan, Charlotte Co, NB, were as follows:

4. Isabella2 STANLEY (Job1) was born circa 1797. She married Daniel Thomas, son of Thomas Thomas and Mary (--?--), on 16 Aug 1813 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. She died on 31 Aug 1861 in Saint John Co, New Brunswick.1

Daniel THOMAS was born circa 1794 in USA. He died on 29 Mar 1878 in Saint John Co, New Brunswick.2

Children of Isabella2 Stanley and Daniel Thomas were as follows:

5. Solomon Dyer2 STANLEY (Job1) was born in Oct 1799 in Provincetown, Barnstable Co, MA. He married Martha Bennett Daley, daughter of Joseph Daley and Abigail Hammond, on 23 Jul 1821 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. He married Sarah Cronk, daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret Stork, on 10 Nov 1853 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (NB Courier, 12 Nov 1853). He died on 9 Mar 1891 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 91 (burial permit Vol 3, #746, Saint John County). He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.

According to a document dated April 1822 [NB Land Petitions, film #F4193, p. 730], Soloman was not married, and a farmer aged 25 years, making him born 1797.

Martha Bennett DALEY died before 1851 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB. Martha's marriage record shows a witness to be a George "Dealey". She was listed as a Dealey as well. This George could very well give reason to name her father George, since she also named a son George.

Children of Solomon Dyer2 Stanley and Martha Bennett Daley all born in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB, were as follows:

Sarah CRONK was born circa 1813 in Saint John Co, NB (info from 1851 census, Simonds Parish, Saint John County, NB). She married Henry Daley, son of Joseph Daley and Abigail Hammond, on 24 Aug 1832 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (St Andrew's Church, Saint John). She died after 1853 in Saint John Co, NB. An entry dated 12 Nov 1853 in the New Brunswick Courier shows "m. 10th instant, by rev. Wm. Donald, Solomon Stanley and Mrs. Sarah Daley, both of Mispec."

There were no children of Solomon Dyer2 Stanley and Sarah Cronk.

6. Sarah2 STANLEY (Job1) was born circa 1802 in Cape Cod, MA. She married David Daley, son of Joseph Daley and Abigail Hammond, on 20 Dec 1821 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. She died on 6 Jan 1882 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Daily Telegraph, 7 January 1882). She was buried on 8 Jan 1882 (Saint John Daily Telegraph, 7 January 1882).

The 1881 of Portland Parish in Saint John, Saint John County, show Sarah Daley, aged 76, born the United States, widow, and living in the household with James Morrison and his wife, her daughter, Patience, and a John Daley, then aged 17.

The Saint John Daily Telegraph, dated 7 January 1882, mentions she was the widow of David Daley, Esquire, and that her funeral would be held from the residence of her son-in-law, Walter Lane, on Wright Street.

David DALEY was born circa 1801 in NB. He died on 19 Jun 1876 in Portland, Saint John Co, NB (Daily Times [Saint John], 20 Jun 1876). He was buried on 21 Jun 1876 in Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. After looking through early Saint John County land records, it would seem probable (although not proven) that David Daley might be the son of a Joseph Dailey/Dayley. Joseph purchased land in 1801, lot #488, from Samuel Hewey. In 1806, a record shows Mary Ann Smith, widow & heir of George Smith, selling Lot #2 of 200 acres at Red Head, Saint John County to Henry Thomas. It was then occupied by Benjamin Mosely [Land record #1454]. On 25 November 1806 [#1455], Henry and Abigail Thomas sold that same lot of land for 30 pounds to Joseph Dailey, mariner of Saint John. Since Joseph Daley was born at Red Head, chances are good that Joseph may have been his grandfather. Further investigation into the land records is necessary.

David "Daly", 70, born New Brunswick, and wife Sarah, 68, b. Nova Scotia, along with daughter Patience, then aged 49, are found within the 1871 census records for Portland Parish, Saint John County. They were all listed as Baptist, and while Sarah was listed as of English origin, both David and daughter Patience were listed as Irish.

His obituary (Saint John Daily Telegraph, 20 Jun 1876), reads, "In Portland, on Monday, 19th inst, after a short illness, David Daly(sic), aged 75 years, leaving a wife and large family to mourn their loss. Funeral on Weds. the 21st at 2 PM from his late residence near the Marsh Bridge."

He married Esther Ann McKee on 21 Oct 1854 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (WC, 10 Nov 1854). He died on 28 May 1895 in Saint John Co, NB.

The Simonds Parish 1891 census show Job Stanley, aged 90 years.

Estate papers for Job Stanley show that Joseph Stanley was living in Bar Harbor, Maine. His brother, Job, was said to be living in Salem, Massachusetts, but the 1900 census does not list him there. Frederick Stanley was deceased, but left four children named in the Administration of the Will: William at Bar Harbour; Phoebe, the wife of Andrew Brown in Saint John; Alice, wife of Samuel Cunningham, parish of Simonds, Saint John County; and Mary, wife of Frederick Fletcher of Nashua, New Hampshire.

Records held by the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery on Thorne Avenue, Saint John confirm her birth at Musquash as well as tell us that her father was Edmund "Hebbern" born in Ireland. For many years no sign of a Edmund Hepburn was uncovered.

Descendants of Alexander Hepburn who was supposedly born in Scotland all tell tales about "Aunt" Mary Daley. This writer began to think it was all a mistake and Mary had been a daughter of Alexander Hepburn after all. Then a passage was found in the book "The Sound of Many Waters " by Ethel Thompson [1980] which said that Edmund Hepburn who had come from Ireland had settled in Musquash in an area which became known as Hepburn's Basin. No further mention was made of him. I tried to reach the author, but to no avail.
