Descendants of James Munday

Generation One

1. James1 MUNDAY was born circa 1787 in Reading, Berks, England. He married Rhoda (--?--) before 1817. He died on 1 May 1862 in 8 Front Row, Campfield, Leeds, Yorks, England (James Mundy died of bronchitis at age 75. He had been a sailcloth weaver, and his daughter, Mary Ann Mundy was present at his death).1 He was buried on 4 May 1862 in Holbeck Cemetery, Holbeck, Yorks, England.2

He appeared on the census of 7 Jun 1841 in Front Street, Leeds, Yorks, England (Both James & Rhoda were listed as being born in another county, both born ca 1797. They also had daughters Mary and Sarah, both aged 15, born in Yorkshire, therefore born ca 1827. James was a sailclothweaver). He appeared on the census of 30 Mar 1851 in 8 Front Row, Leeds (Southern), Yorks, England (In 1851, James Munday and family were living at 8 Front Row, in the southern area of Leeds. At this time, just daughter Margaret aged 28, born Hunslet, was living with James aged 62 [b. c1790] and Rhoda, aged 64 [b. c1788]. It was this census that listed James as being born Reading, Berkshire and Rhoda born Eckfield [sic], Hampshire [HO 107/2319 folio 187]).

Rhoda (--?--) was born circa 1786 in Heckfield, Hampshire, England. She died in Apr 1862 in Leeds, Yorks, England. She was buried on 3 Apr 1862 in Holbeck Cemetery, Holbeck, Yorks, England.3

Children of James1 Munday and Rhoda (--?--) were as follows:

Generation Two

4. Sarah2 MUNDAY (James1)10 was born on 29 Jan 1824 in Holbeck, Yorks, England. She was baptized on 18 Apr 1824 in Leeds, Yorks, England. She married James Dean, son of Joseph Dean and Margaret (--?--), on 29 Aug 1845 in Leeds, Yorks, England (At the time of her marriage in 1845, Sarah Munday was listed as a resident of Campfield, and James Dean was a labourer and clothweaver, residing on York Road in Leeds).11 She died after 4 Apr 1881 (Sarah Munday Dean may have died in 1885. FreeBMD has a death between Aug and Sep 1885, where a Sarah was aged 67: 9b, page 176. The writer has not yet sent for this certificate).12

She appeared on the census of 10 Apr 1871 in 8 Paradise Lane, Hunslet, York, England (#105 - 8 Paradise Lane:

Sarah Dean w 47 b. Leeds; John M. s m 25 b. Leeds; Mary A. d-i-l m 22 b. Hunslet; Martha d s 19 Farnley; Mary A. d s 17 b. Farnley; Rhoda d s 15 b. Wortley; James s s 12 b. Hunslet; Joseph s 9 b. Hunslet; Charles E. gr-s s 5 mos b. Hunslet.

Hunslet 1871 Census, LDS #848471 [stamped page 83, part 2: RG10/4570, last page of St Barnabas]). She appeared on the census of 3 Apr 1881 in Hunslet, Yorks, England (The census for Hunslet shows Sarah, aged 57, widowed dressmaker, living with only two of her children: Rhoda, then 24 and a cap maker, and Joseph, then aged 19, Engineer At Works (E & M). Their residence was 8 Derby Place, which is basically the same area of Hunslet that they were found in 1871).13,14 In searching for Sarah Dean for 1891, the writer checked 8 Derby Place in Hunslet. A young couple, George Bratton 26 and his wife Thomasine, 23, Robert 1, and Edward, 6 mos. were now living there. Although the family had moved frequently, I think Sarah was gone by 1891.

James DEAN was born on 14 Apr 1818 in Leeds, Yorks, England. He was baptized on 21 Jun 1818 in St Peter's Church, Leeds, Yorks, England (This baptism presents questions since we know that both Joseph Dean and Margaret were his parents, but Joseph did not marry Margaret Malkin until 1821. Either he was born without benefit of his parents' marriage, or he was the son of another Margaret. His sister Mary was born in 1800, no mother mentioned. It is likely that all the children were born by a woman other than Margaret Malkin).15 When he died on 12 Sep 1862 in 22 Clayton Street, Holbeck, Yorks, England, he was a carder of felt-cloth (aged 41).16,17 He was buried on 14 Sep 1862 in Holbeck Cemetery, Holbeck, Yorks, England.18 He appeared on the census of 1841 (Our James Dean is aged 20, a woolen carder, living with the family of Joseph and Mary Dean Pearson in the 1841 census. If this is his older sister, Mary, then aged 40, it is possible that his parents were already gone by 1841

). He appeared on the census of 30 Mar 1851 in Farnley, Leeds District, York, England (James was 30, Sarah was 27, both born Leeds, as well as two of their children, John Munday, aged 5, and Margaret, aged 3. There was also a Rhoda, born Farnley, aged 1, who must have died before 1856 when another Rhoda was born at Wortley. Son James' birth registration in 1858 shows that the family was living at 2 Brougham Street in Hunslet. [#2314, 127]). He appeared on the census of 1861 in Hunslet, York, England (James Dean, 39, b. Leeds; Sarah, 37, b. Holbeck; John, 15, b. Leeds; Margaret, 13, b. Leeds; Martha, 10, b. Farnley; Mary Ann, 7, b. Farnley; Rhoda, 5, b. Wortley; and James, 3, b. Hunslet. James was listed as a carder of felt cloth, and wife Sarah was a dress maker. Son John was a cloth miller at that time, and daughter Margaret was a flax spinner. The four younger children were in school. Their residence was 7 Milindidge Street. Their son Joseph's birth registration in May of 1861 states the family was residing 7 Milinda Court, Hunslet. This write has not yet been able to locate either address on a map).
