Generation One


1. Zebedee1 HAMMOND was born on 13 Apr 1753 at No. Yarmouth, Cumberland Co, Maine; VR, Cumberland Co, ME. He married Martha Bennett, daughter of Jonathan Bennett and Martha Parsons, on 16 Oct 1774 at Gloucester, Essex Co, Massachusetts.1 He died in 1802 at St Andrews, Charlotte Co, New Brunswick.

Martha BENNETT was born circa 1757. She was baptized on 2 Apr 1758 at Gloucester, Essex Co, Massachusetts; 1st Parish Church. She married (--?--) Scott; Martha Bennett Hammond supposedly married a man named Scott and moved to Fredericton after Zebedee's death.2 She died on 6 Feb 1823; Martha Scott was aged 66 years. The newspaper was dated 13 February 1823 but mentions she died Thursday evening. Since the 13th was also a Thursday, this writer assumes she passed away the previous Thursday.3

Generation Two


3. Abigail2 HAMMOND (Zebedee1) was born circa 1775 at Maine. She married Joseph Daley, son of David Daley and Mehitable Webber, before 1801.9 She died after 1851 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
She appeared on the census of 1851 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Abigail Dealey, 76, b. US, mother-in-law, came to the colony in 1783 as a Loyalist, and was liviing with Solomon Stanley, widower, along with his children, as well as Sarah Dealey, 39, a native, and David Dealey, 9 and William, 7. The next enumerated household was belonging to Elisha Stanley.10

Joseph DALEY was born before 1773 at Maine. He died before 1851 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

6. Martha2 HAMMOND (Zebedee1) was born in 1783 at St Andrews, Charlotte Co, New Brunswick; Martha was listed as the first white child born in St Andrews.11 She married Jabesh Caleb Squires in 1798.12 She died on 10 Dec 1857 at Carleton Co, New Brunswick; Martha died at her residence in Kent parish, aged 74.13,14 She was buried at Upper Kent Cemetery, Carleton Co, New Brunswick.15

Jabesh Caleb SQUIRES16 was born in 1775 at near Stratford, Fairfield Co, Connecticut.17 He died on 4 Mar 1863 at Carleton Co, New Brunswick; Jabesh was noted as 88 years old on his gravestone.18 He was buried at Upper Kent Cemetery, Carleton Co, New Brunswick.19 When the King's Regiment was recruited, Jabesh joined. Later, when war was again threatening with the United States, he joined what was to become the 104th Regiment, serving as Sergeant, colour sergeant and sergeant major. He took part in the famous Snoeshoe March from Fredericton to Quebec and Kingston during February and March 1813. Son Zebedee was attached as a boy of ten to the Regiment. They both returned to New Brunswick about 1817 when the regiment was disbanded.20

7. David3 DALEY (Abigail2 Hammond, Zebedee1) was born circa 1801 at New Brunswick. He married Sarah Stanley, daughter of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 20 Dec 1821 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died on 19 Jun 1876 at Portland, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; His obituary reads, "In Portland, on Monday, 19th inst, after a short illness, David Daly(sic), aged 75 years, leaving a wife and large family to mourn their loss. Funeral on Weds. the 21st at 2 PM from his late residence near the Marsh Bridge".109 He was buried on 21 Jun 1876 at Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
He appeared on the census of 1871 at Portland Parish, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; David "Daly", 70, born New Brunswick, and wife Sarah, 68, b. US , along with daughter Patience, then aged 49, are found within the 1871 census records for Portland Parish, Saint John County. They were all listed as Baptist, and while Sarah was listed as of English origin, both David and daughter Patience were listed as Irish.


Sarah STANLEY was born circa 1802 at Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She died on 6 Jan 1882 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Her newspaper obituary, dated 7 January 1882, mentions she was the widow of David Daley, Esquire, and that her funeral would be held from the residence of her son-in-law, Walter Lane, on Wright Street.110 She was buried on 8 Jan 1882 at Saint John Co., New Brunswick.111 She appeared on the census of 1881 at Ward 4, Portland, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Sarah Daley, aged 76, born the United States, widow, and living in the household with James Morrison and his wife, her daughter, Patience, and a John Daley, then aged 17.112

8. Martha Bennett3 DALEY (Abigail2 Hammond, Zebedee1) married Solomon Dyer Stanley, son of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 23 Jul 1821 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Martha's marriage record shows a witness to be a George "Dealey". She was listed as a Dealey as well. She died before 1851 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

Solomon Dyer STANLEY was born in Oct 1799 at Provincetown, Barnstable Co, Massachusetts; Burial Permit lists Providence, US as his birthplace and that he was a fisherman. LIkely that Providence was a mistake for Provincetown.116 He married Sarah Cronk, daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret Stork, on 10 Nov 1853 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.117 He died on 9 Mar 1891 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 91; He was aged 91 yrs, 5 mos, living at the corner of Rodney & Union Streets, West Saint John.118 He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.119 He appeared on the census of 1881; Solomon "Standley" was 82, b. USA, a fisherman, and a Wesleyan Methodist, living in the household of Warren Standley and his family. Also in the household was John Standley, 88, b. England, presumed to be his brother, also a widow. Also a Mary Daly, 44, widow, b. USA, J. Edgar Daly, 3, Frank, 6 and Sarah E., b. Oct 1880.120

9. Henry3 DALEY (Abigail2 Hammond, Zebedee1) was born at New Brunswick. He married Sarah Cronk, daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret Stork, on 24 Aug 1832 at St Andrew's Church, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Henry "Daly" and Sarah Cronk were both of Portland upon marriage, David "Daley" being witness to the ceremony. He died before 1851 at New Brunswick?

Sarah CRONK was born circa 1813 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick; info from 1851 census, Simonds Parish, Saint John County, NB. She was baptized on 8 Jul 1820 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; St. Andrew's Church. She married Solomon Dyer Stanley, son of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 10 Nov 1853 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.132 She died before 1881 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She appeared on the census of 1851 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Sarah "Dealey", was living in the household of Solomon Stanley with her two children, as well as her husband's mother after he died. She would marry Solomon in 1853.133

Julia3 SQUIRES (Martha2 Hammond, Zebedee1)135,136,137 was born in Jul 1820 at New Brunswick.138,139 She married Jacob Rideout, son of Oliver Rideout and Susanna Seaman, on 18 Nov 1860 at Carleton Co, New Brunswick.140,141 She died on 25 Sep 1905 at East Portland, Cumberland Co, Maine, at age 85; Julia was living with her daughter at the time of her death.142
She appeared on the census of 1900 at Pittston, Kennebec Co, Maine; Julia M. Rideout, 79, was living with her daughter, Hattie Lewis, her husband George, and three of their granchildren by the last name of Burrill.143

Jacob RIDEOUT144,145,146 was born on 8 Jan 1806 at Sheffield, Sunbury Co, New Brunswick.147 He married Mary Kearney on 7 May 1831.148 He died on 14 Aug 1890 at age 84.149 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Castle Hill, Aroostook Co, Maine; Jacob Rideout, 73, Julia A., 60, Noah, 34 and Hattie A, 18.150

Ebenezer MCNICHOL was born circa 1816; info from 1851 census, Saint John [Duke/Queens]. He married Charlotte Maloney on 3 Apr 1851 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He witnessed the marriage of Levi Melvin Simpson and Emily Jane McNichol in 1867 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.161

He appeared on the census of 1881 at Ward 4, Portland, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Joseph, 49, Mary, 48, and children as being Baptists of Irish origin. Eveline, 18, Mabel, 18, Carrie L., 10, Blanche, 8, Henry, 14, and William, 1. Joseph was a carpenter and William was an apprentice.165 He lived between 1883 and 1884 at Old Westmoreland Road, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; St John Directory. He appeared on the census of 6 May 1891 at Portland, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Joseph Daley was 63, a Baptist, house carpenter, Mary was 62, her father born in Scotland, and her mother in the US. Son Henry was 25 and a blacksmith, daughter Jennie was 12. He appeared on the census of 1901 at Victoria Ward, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Joseph Daley, 70, English heritage, Mary, 74, Scotch heritage, along with their grandson, Sylvester Arrowsmith, erroneously listed as step-son, 14, and daughter, Jennie, 21. Joseph was a carpenter, and he and Mary, and Jennie were Baptists. Sylvester was Anglican, and a student.

Joseph, 70, was also listed as a lodger in the home of Henry "Daly" and wife Agnes along with Patience Morrison, then 76. It was unmistakeably him as the birthdate: 9 Jul 1920 was given for both entries in the census.166,167 He lived in 1907 at Thorne Avenue, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Saint John City Directory.

Mary HEPBURN was born on 22 Feb 1827 at Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.168 She died on 5 Oct 1919 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 92; "Mary Daley died of cerebral haemorrhage [sic] ". - this from the Methodist Cemetery records. Maiden name listed as Hebbern.169 She was buried on 7 Oct 1919 at Methodist Burying Ground, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Mary's obituary in the Saint John Globe dated Monday, 6 October 1919 tells that she died Sunday at the home of her son Henry Daley on Westmorland Road. She was born at Musquash. Records held by the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery on Thorne Avenue, Saint John confirm her birth at Musquash as well as tell us that her father was Edmund "Hebbern" born in Ireland. For many years no sign of a Edmund Hepburn was uncovered. She appeared on the census of 1911 at 167 Westmorland Street, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Mary daley, aged 85, and a widow, was living with her son Henry Daley, his wife Agnes and the Arrowsmiths.170

She married Walter Lane, son of Walter Lane and Elizabeth Lisson, on 18 Sep 1855 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.182 She died on 12 Jul 1860 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She was buried at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

Walter LANE183,184 was born on 6 Jul 1833 at Bandon, Cork, Ireland.185,186 He married Isabella Daley, daughter of David Daley and Sarah Stanley, on 26 Sep 1861 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died on 24 Dec 1906 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 73. He was buried on 27 Dec 1906 at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Grave #759, Lot 8, Spruce Ave.187 He and Isabella Daley appeared on the census of 1901 at 160 Wright Street, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Walter Lane, 67, and Isabelle, 55, children: Frederick C., 27, Winnie, 21, Rietta L., 17, and Wiliam, 12. Birthdates for all were given as well as that Walter was listed as a Baptist and a carpenter by trade.188

He married Margaret Russell, daughter of John Russell and Ruth Heirsy?, on 26 Feb 1859 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died on 7 Jun 1929 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, California, at age 92. He was buried on 10 Jun 1929 at IOOF Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, California.

Walter LANE199,200 was born on 6 Jul 1833 at Bandon, Cork, Ireland.201,202 He married Amanda Daley, daughter of David Daley and Sarah Stanley, on 18 Sep 1855 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.203 He died on 24 Dec 1906 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 73. He was buried on 27 Dec 1906 at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Grave #759, Lot 8, Spruce Ave.204

He married Mary McCracken on 13 Jun 1874 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He married Jane Silliphant, daughter of John Silliphant and Alice Goss, on 27 Sep 1875 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died before 1889.

Mary MCCRACKEN was born circa 1847. She died on 14 Dec 1874 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Saint JOhn Daily News, 15 Dec 1874. She was buried on 16 Dec 1874.

29. Solomon4 STANLEY Jr (Martha3 Daley, Abigail2 Hammond, Zebedee1) was born circa 1827 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He married Harriet Daley on 10 Nov 1851 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.222 He married Hannah Griffin on 8 Dec 1856 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died on 18 Jan 1880 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Solomon's obituary, which appeared in the Saint John Daily Times on 23 January 1880, states that he left a wife and six children behind.

Harriet DALEY died on 13 Aug 1856 at near Partridge Island, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; "On Wednesday afternoon, two women named Harriet Stanly and Margaret Daly were going company with Joseph Whelpley, Charles Magee and a boy in a small boat from Saint John to their home near Mispeck and when near Partridge Island, the boat was upset and the two women were drowned. The men and boy were saved. The deceased were sisters".223
There were no children of Solomon4 Stanley Jr and Harriet Daley.

Hannah GRIFFIN was born circa 1833. She died after 1881 at New Brunswick. She appeared on the census of 1881 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Hanah Stanley, 48, b. Nova Scotia, belonging to the Church of England; Emma J., 22, William, 18, Solomon, 15, A. Ruben, 11, Ester Anne, 9, and Martha, 7, all Methodist. The first four children worked in a cotton factory.224

30. Henry4 STANLEY (Martha3 Daley, Abigail2 Hammond, Zebedee1) was born circa 1829 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He married Margaret Jenkins on 10 Nov 1851 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Weekly Chronicle, 14 Nov 1851.234 He married Eliza Ann Silliphant, daughter of John Silliphant and Alice Goss, after 1865. He married Hannah Griffin, daughter of Solomon Griffin and Jane (--?--), on 15 Aug 1889 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; It's very strange on the marriage record as it lists Henry's parents as Henry & Mary, and hers as Solomon and Jane. Anyone having any ideas about this, please contact me.
Residence of bride and groom as well as birthplace was given as Mispec. BOth were listed as widowed.235,236,237 He died on 6 Nov 1889 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; "About Mispeck and vicinity consideable anxiety is felt over the strange disappearance of an old man named Henry Stanley. He left his home on Monday eve. last and has not since returned, nor has anything been heard from him. It is feared that he became demented and either perished in the water or wandered into the woods and there died of exposure".238

Margaret JENKINS was born circa 1835. She died on 31 Mar 1865 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.239

Eliza Ann SILLIPHANT240,241 was born circa 1843 at PEI; info from 1881 census, Kings Ward, Saint John Co, NB. She married Titus Ackerly in 1863 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick; The marriage is located within Marriage Bonds as Titus Ackerly and Eliza Sullivan. Co-signer was Richard Stackhouse.

He married Isabella Dyer Thomas, daughter of Daniel Thomas and Isabella Stanley, on 24 Oct 1853 at St Andrew's Church, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.248 He died in May 1881 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Isabella is listed in 1881 census as a widow as of May.249

Isabella Dyer THOMAS was born circa 1836 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She died on 6 Nov 1884 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick.250 She appeared on the census of 1881 at Simonds, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Isabella was aged 44, widowed, and had in her household: Martha, 23, Hannah, 22, Samuel, 13 and Charles 3. They were C. Methodist.251

He appeared on the census of 1881 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; William H. Daly, 30, Mary, 28, Harry L., 7, Sarah J., 5 and James A., 1. The family was Baptist. Also in household were James Pollock, 35, David, 23, Annie, 21 and Maggie 16. The Pollocks were Anglican.256

She appeared on the census of 1881 at St George, Charlotte Co, New Brunswick; Levi Simpson, 36, Emely, 32, Elila, 12, Alvin, 10, Mabareen, 7, Melvin, 5, and Willard, 3. Levi was a ship's captain, and the family was Baptist.277

Levi Melvin SIMPSON278 was born circa 1845 at New Brunswick.279 He appeared on the census of 1881 at St George, Charlotte Co, New Brunswick; Levi Simpson 36, ship captain, wife Emily, 32, Elila, 12, Alvin, 10, Mabareen, 7, Melvin, 5, and Willard, 3. All members of the household were Baptist.280

She died on 7 Aug 1906 at Boston, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts.298 She was buried at Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

Born in Saint John she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Doris (Burgess) Ingram. She was a member of St. Luke's Anglican Church. She was a cherished mother to Carolyn (Buddy) George of Grand Bay Westfield, Nancy McCaffrey of Saint John, Barry (Vera) of Saint John, and Carla Gee of Ottawa, ON, her sisters Patricia (David) Hannah of Saint John, Wendy Hartin of Saint John, Norma (Doug) Cosman of Halifax, her sisters-in-law Norma Huestis of Saint John, Gloria Ingram of Ottawa, ON, and her loving grandchildren Jamie, Colin, Christopher, Jonathan, Jennifer, Shawna and Michael, great grandchildren Calvin, Erin and Emma and several nieces and nephews. Her brothers David and Edward Ingram predeceased her. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), with visiting on Wednesday from 7-9 PM and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Friday, February 6, 2004, at 1:00 PM, from Brenan's Chapel. Interment will take place at Fernhill Cemetery.
