Descendants of Daniel Belding

Generation One

1. Daniel1 BELDING was born on 29 May 1754 in New Haven, New Haven Co, Connecticut.1 He was born on 29 May 1760. He married Mabel Bristall. He died circa 1849 in Chance Harbor, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He was buried in Graveyard Point, Chance Harbor, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

According to a Belding Family History written by Frederick Thompson [sent to writer by grandson M. Ronald Thompson], Daniel Belding was a Naval Lieutenant on the "Polly", a British Privateer, running between Salem and Liverpool during the Revolution. After the War, being Loyalists, Daniel Belding and his family came to Saint John in 1783, accompanied by his brother Samuel, who never married. This writer has not yet found anything to substantiate this family lore.

It is highly likely that Daniel Belding was the youngest son of Jared Belding b. c1716 and his wife Dinah Thomas of New Haven, Connecticut. Their children are listed as Dinah, b. 1748, Mary b. 1750, Martha b. 1753, and two sons, Jared and Samuel, both who died in December 1778 on Long Island while with the British army. There are no birth dates for these sons, and where the information was found that they died is not known as it was not sources within the family history found within the history of New Haven. The Thomas family also went to Saint John County settling not far away from the Belding family. The other clue was that Jared Sr had two sons named Jared and Samuel who were lost during the war.

The family lived on St. James Street in Saint John until 1805 when he sold the property to William Godsoe, and removed to Chance Harbour. Daniel erected his house by a cove, later called Old Place Cove. Daniel worked as a pilot and from this point of land he watched for sailing ships bound for Saint John, putting out from there to guide them safely into the harbour. His account book dated 1797 show he received fees for his pilot service as well as bringing home supplies from Saint John. It also showed he traded fish and lobsters. Some of the old stones from his fireplace, and a few collapsed walls are all that remain of his house. His next house was bigger and built on Outside Hill, near a creek.

This creek became known as Belding's Creek for three generations - and since then as Thompson's Creek. IN 1956 this property was owned by Hazen Thompson (5th generation descendant) and Harry Shaw.[Most of this info was taken from "The Tides of Discipline" by Ethel Thompson, 1978.].

Mabel BRISTALL was born on 10 Aug 1763 in New Haven, New Haven Co, Connecticut. She died on 29 Jan 1851 in Chance Harbour, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 87 ("d. Chance Harbour, 29th ult., ...age 87, arrived with Loyalists in 1783, left progeny of three generations").2 Mabel Bristall/Bristol is also a mystery, like her husband. Again, there is no proof, but this writer finds it highly likely that Mabel is the daughter of David Bristol b. 13 Jun 1742 at New Haven, Connecticut and his wife, Mabel Thomas, b. 20 Oct 1742 New Haven. Town records show that they had a daughter Mabel, who *died* on 10 August 1763. We also know there was a close tie between the Thomas and Belding families. Thomas Thomas, Loyalist from New Haven, CT appears to have ended up in Mispec, dying there 8 July 1831. I do not have a full copy of the obit from the NB Courier, 16 July 1831, but someone wrote me that it said he came in 1783, and was aged 85. Apparently, he was a silversmith from New York and arrived on the Hopewell with the June fleet of 1783, living in Saint John for 40 years and then moved to Mispec where several members of his family had previously settled. Thomas Thomas was born in New Haven as well.

Felix Thomas was buried next to Daniel Belding in Chance Harbour, and Felix was son of Samuel Thomas who was a brother to Thomas Thomas.

Children of Daniel1 Belding and Mabel Bristall were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Mabel2 BELDING (Daniel1) was born on 18 Dec 1783 in New Haven, New Haven Co, Connecticut. She married Alexander Hepburn on 24 Nov 1802 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She died on 1 Oct 1866 in Carleton, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 82 (Death notice in "Christian Visitor" [Saint John] dated 18 Oct 1866 says she died the October the 12th, aged 85, "widow of Alexander Hepburn, and one of the first Loyalists who landed in this Province." The "Morning News" [Saint John] dated the 15th of October adds that her funeral would be held at 9 o'clock, Monday morning (the 15th) from her residence on Gifford Street). She was buried on 15 Oct 1866 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

Saint John County Land Records (O3-S-3, page 360), #18620 has an Indenture recorded 19 June 1859 between John Johnstone, Esquire, of Saint John city, and Mabel Hepburn, widow of the late Alexander Hepburn of Musquash, parish of Lancaster. Margaret Johnstone, widow, did by indenture, 20 August 1847 release unto John Johnstone land formerly granted to Donald Campbell.

Alexander HEPBURN was born circa 1775 in Scotland (obituary, New Brunswick Courier, 19 Nov 1842). He died on 18 Nov 1842 in Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick ("d. Musquash, Friday morn, 18th instant,...age 67, native of Scotland, left wife, children, Funeral Sunday one o'clock").3 He was buried on 20 Nov 1842.4 On the 18th of March 1801, Hugh Johnston and his wife Ann sold a piece of land located in Kings ward (originally granted to Paul and Joseph Beadle in the original grant of Parr Town) to Alexander Hepburn.

David Belding's house was near the location of the present Baptist Church, with frontage on the west at Belding's Creek, and on the east by the harbour. In the next generation this land was divided between the Tiner and the Hargrove families.

Supposedly, David Belding lost a hand in a shooting accident at the age of sixteen years.[Info from Ethel Thompson's "The Tides of Discipline", 1978.]. He appeared on the census of 1881 in Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (In 1881, David Belding was living with his son-in-law, George Hargrove and his daughter, Drusilla).6

Jane THOMAS was born circa 1806 in New Brunswick.7 She died in Nov 1838 in Dipper Harbor, Saint John Co, New Brunswick ("d. Dipper Harbour, St John Co, November, Jane w/o David Belding, age 32, left husband, numerous offspring").8

He was buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire, Eau Claire Co, WI.

The 1865-1866 Saint John directory, Jared Hepburn is listed as residing at "Union n Charlotte", and he was a Block and Pump Maker.

In 1880, Jared Hepburn and family lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. His sons Jared Jr., William and Alexander were present at that time. The 1900 census shows he lived in Union, Eau Claire County with his two younger daughters, Mabel and Grace. No sign of his sons. However, Jared Hepburn, son of Charles Hepburn, was also residing in Eau Claire County.

Julia THOMAS was born circa 1820.18 She died on 29 Sep 1848 in Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick ("d. Musquash Friday morn., ...age 25. Funeral Sunday 2 o'clock").19 She was buried on 1 Oct 1848.20

There were no children of Jared3 Hepburn and Julia Thomas.

Ann Jane SEABURY was born circa 1824. She died on 24 Jan 1862 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She was buried on 26 Jan 1862 in Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (The new Brunswick Courier, dated 25 January 1862 lists: "died Friday morning, 24th instant, Ann Jane, wife of Jared Hepburn, age 38, left husband, five children. He was buried on 30 Jul 1899 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Dorchester, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts (Buried Lot 1301 Elm Grove, purchased on that day by his wife, Lydia).

The 1891 census of Saint John, Lancaster Parish, lists that Charles Hepburn was then aged 69, born New Brunswick, whose father was born Scotland and his mother in the US. He was farmer and a Baptist. At that time only three children remained within his household: Charles and Lydia then aged 21, and William, aged 17.

Lydia TRAFTON was born on 22 Mar 1832 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She died on 26 Jan 1904 in 14 Edward Street, Medford, Middlesex Co, Massachusetts, at age 71 (Information was obtained from Lydia's death certicate [1904, vol 65, page 209, no. 17] filed with MA Vital Records). There were only three children at home at that time, all being raised as Baptists: "Gussie", 16, William, 14 and David, 23.

Generation Four

22. Mary4 HEPBURN (Edmund3, Mabel2Belding, Daniel1) was born on 27 Feb 1827 in Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (b'date from 1901 census, Victoria Ward, Saint John). She married Joseph Daley, son of David Daley and Sarah Stanley, circa 1860. She died on 5 Oct 1919 in Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 92 ("Mary Daley died of cerebral haemorrhage [sic] ". - this from the Methodist Cemetery records. Maiden name listed as Hebbern).62 She was buried on 7 Oct 1919 in Methodist Burying Ground, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick (Mary's obituary in the Saint John Globe dated Monday, 6 October 1919 tells that she died Sunday at the home of her son Henry Daley on Westmorland Road. She was born at Musquash. Records held by the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery on Thorne Avenue, Saint John confirm her birth at Musquash as well as tell us that her father was Edmund "Hebbern" born in Ireland. For many years no sign of a Edmund Hepburn was uncovered).

Descendants of Alexander Hepburn who was supposedly born in Scotland all tell tales about "Aunt" Mary Daley. This writer began to think it was all a mistake and Mary had been a daughter of Alexander Hepburn after all. Then a passage was found in the book "The Sound of Many Waters " by Ethel Thompson [1980] which said that Edmund Hepburn who had come from Ireland had settled in Musquash in an area which became known as Hepburn's Basin. No further mention was made of him. I tried to reach the author, but to no avail. So the question is - how does Edmund Hepburn fit in? Is he another son of Alexander? Who was his wife? Other children besides Mary? With only two mentions of him - the book and her burial permit, did he die early and she was raised with Charles Hepburn and siblings? Or was Alexander actually Alexander Edmund?
