My direct ancestors migrated from the United Kingdom to Australia in the mid 1850's. They were mostly of a mining background and came to Australia chasing gold. The Australian gold rush commenced with discovery of gold at Bathurst, NSW in 1851. That same year extensive gold fields were discovered in Victoria. The Victorian gold fields is where my ancestors headed.

Like most gold prospectors they failed to 'strike it rich'. They settled in the gold fields and then spread out across the entire continent of Australia and beyond.
Australia and U.S.A. have both welcomed immigrants from far afield and both countries now have a diverse and vibrant society as a result of continuing a vibrant immigration policy.

After the 1850's gold rush, immigrants came to Australia in search of a better life. Most were sucessful and their descendants have flourished.
European settlement in Australia commenced in 1788 - as a Penal Colony. Convicts were transported from UK for a range of offences with sentences from a few years to life. Many convicts had sentences prohibiting them from returning to the UK.
