JAMES GREENLEE & MARY ELIZABETH (FUCHS) HARKINS


James Greenlee Harkins, the son of John Francis Harkins and Hethey Evaline McCallum, was born June 26, 1870 in Union County, Georgia. He married Mary Elizabeth Fuchs October 29, 1891 at C. L. Fuchs home in Ballinger, Runnels County, Texas. To them were born eleven children, Francis, Amos Acey, Callie Mae, Daisy Pauline, Delbert Marion, Della Lee, Florabell, James Francis, Roy Burt, Zettie Rae, and Odis Orin Harkins. Mary was born Sept. 20, 1873 in Prarie Du Sac, Sauk, Wisconsin to Karl Ludwig Friedrich Fuchs and Dorthea Thoeny.

In 1916 they moved from Texas to Eklaka, Montana area and started ranching. They moved to Oregon when they retired. After Mr. Harkins death October 25, 1947 in Grants Pass, Oregon, Mary lived with her son Delbert at Eugene, Oregon until her death May 15, 1957.

James G. Harkins was convicted of manslaughter, sentenced on Nov. 30, 1928 to a term of 5 - 10 years. Shot and killed John Jolly with a 38 calibre pistol after a quarrel about Jolly stealing a heifer for which James had reported him. Jolly was acquitted but after the trial paid for the animal. James admitted to killing John Jolly in self defense. He was pardoned by the Governor in 1931.
