There are various estimates of Edward's date of birth. The shippingpapers for the Susan, 1839, give his age as 46, which would mean he wasborn in 1793. His death certificate in 1885 gives his age as 103, whichwould mean he was born in 1882.

Ross Wilson:
The Walmsleys were brought to Australia by a Mr Marshall. The 1841 censusshows the family living on Henry Osborne's estate at Garden Hill,Wollongong. There were nine people in the house, which was owned byOsborne, all were free (ie not convicts) and had arrived in Australiafree. Two were aged 2-7 (one male, one female), two were aged 7-14 (onemale, one female, two were aged 14-21 (two males), two were aged 21-45(one male, one female), and one was aged 45-60 (male). All were Anglican, two were married, one was a landowner, and three were "shepherds, gardeners, stockmen or otherwise employed in agriculture".
Ross Wilson:
Edward and his large family came to Australia on the Susan, a ship of 573tons, built in Calcutta in 1813. She departed from Londonderry inNovember 1838 and Portsmouth on December 8 1838 and arrived in Sydney onMarch 10, 1839.
W.A.W. Walmsley says the Susan arrived on January 10, 1839.
Ship's papers list Edward as 42, a farm servant and gardener, unable toread or write, and content with his treatment on the voyage.

The late Georgina Tucker, a grand daughter of Edward Walmsley, who diedaged 96 on February 4 1977, recounted that her grandfather came toWindsor by Wiseman's Ferry to Blue Gum Flat (Aboriginal name Orimba, meaning tall tree), with horses and men to work with timber.
He established his homestead, Gosford Park, at Ourimbah. He died atBurrawang, at his daughter, Jane Irvine's place, on August 15, 1885,reputedly at the age of 103 years. He was buried in the Church of EnglandCemetery at Lisarow, near Ourimbah.
Georgina Tucker: "The old home in which he and the Irvines lived wasstill standing in 1978 when I visited the area.
"Edward was the pioneer of the timber industry at Blue Gum Flat. In theearly days he employed convicts. All goods were brought from Sydney toGosford by boat and then carted by horses to the homestead.
"They supplied their own beef and mutton. Cattle and sheep for thepurpose were brought from Maitland by road. At trip took three days evenwith the help of well-trained sheep dogs.
"A pack of 28 beagle hounds and kangaroo dogs (greyhounds) was kept tokeep wallabies from eating the crops. Water was supplied by a well quiteclose to the house.
"Farming was done to supply food for the family, workmen and stock.
"He had the Travellers Rest Hotel built to accommodate travellers andtheir horses, etc. He also kept the old Wiseman's Ferry Inn, which waspurchased from Solomon Wiseman. This hotel still stands and is popularwith tourists.
"His obituary reads: 'The old gentleman enjoyed good health up to hisdeath, nine children survive him while there are grandchildren and greatgrandchildren enough to stock a colony. He had a talent for getting on,and amassed a considerable among of landed property in the neighbourhoodof the Ferry and Gosford.' "
