Descendants of William Alfred Williford

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM ALFRED1 WILLIFORD was born 1836 in Georgia, and died in Pike County, Alabama. He married SUSAN. She was born 1839 in South Carolina, and died in Pike County, Alabama.

Notes for WILLIAM ALFRED WILLIFORD:
In the 1870 Pike Co., AL census the family is listed in China Grove, Beat #3. Census taken 21st August 1870. The family name is spelled WILAFORD. They are in dwelling number 63 and family number 63. William is listed as W. Alfred. In 1880 he is listed as William A. William and Susan say their place of birth is Georgia. In 1880 Susan gives her place of birth as S. Carolina. The oldest child appears as Wethley A., age 12, female. However, in 1880 the oldest child is listed as Wesley, age 21, male. While I believe this to be the same person, I am attempting to locate the family in 1860 for better accuracy. John and Nancy do not appear with the family in 1880. John would be 20 and Nancy 18. I presume they are married and living elsewhere in the county. William, Sarah, Levi and Charles who appear in the 1870 census are joined by additional brothers and sisters in the 1880 census. James, Henry, Benjamin, Olie or Alice (female) and baby Mary. Mary's age is given as 6/12 (6 months) in 1880. She could have been born December 1779 or January 1880. Census taken June 30, 1880. The family is shown to be living in the Orion Community, Beat #2, dwelling number 564 and family number 125. The family name is spelled WILLOWFORD. In 1910 census W. A., age 74 and Susan, age 71 still reside in Pike County. W. A. lists is birthplace as GA and Susan give S.C. Their son, J. T. age 32 resides with them. I first thought this was James but the age does not match. A grandson named Climb Williford age 16 also resides with the family in 1910.

Notes for ANNIE RACHAEL SCARBROUGH:
Annie Scarborough Williford is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, Pike County, Alabama. She is buried next to Henry and three babies. One of the babies is named Thomas. Thomas was listed in the 1900 census as being born in 1898. Thomas does not appear with the family in 1910. In the 1900 census Annie states that 2 of her children were not living, Thomas would make the third child buried near Annie and Henry. I can remember visiting at "Grandma Williford's" several times as a child. I especially remember the visit in the summer of 1961, just having turned 10 years old. Grandma Williford lived in a big white house in the city limits of Troy, Alabama. My brother and I used to play on her porch. That porch was wide and went around all sides of the house. My brother and I slid on the porch banisters and jumped to the ground, which was quite a distance. She had several rocking chairs on the porch, which were fun to rock back on until you turned over and got into trouble. Grandma Williford was a short, heavy set woman with snow white hair. I remember her as being pleasant and always glad to see us. I panicked on at least one occasion when she asked me to sleep with her. I was afraid that she would roll over and smother me before my parents could dig me out. The sleeping option was a floor palet. Her wooden floor was cold and hard, but I didn't mind. Watching Grandma Williford brush her hair out was a treat. During the day she always wore her hair in a small ball pulled tightly behind her ears. At night, I never saw so much hair. After she combed it out, it hung waist length in beautiful waves. Grandma Williford smoked filterless cigarettes. Now she didn't believe in wasting anything, so she used a hairpin to hold the cigarette butt. This allowed her to smoke the cigarette down to ashes. Like so many other women of her time, Grandma Williford kept her money purse near her bossom. She was never embarrassed to reach for her money in front of a store clerk. In 1963, my parents checked me and my brother, Ray, out of school. I didn't know what was going on, only that my father said we would be back in about a week and that it was a sad occasion. Grandma Williford died in October 1963. I remember going to the funeral home and the cemetery. Looking back, I wish I had listened harder to the family stories she used to recall with my Dad.

Notes for MAUDE BELL WILLIFORD:
Mude Williford was the 3rd child of Henry C. Williford and Annie Scarbrough Williford. Her nickname was "Coot". I affectionately call her "Grandma Coot". There is only one known photo of Grandma Coot. She is sitting on the running board of the old Model A with her children. Grandma Coot had dated a local boy that went off to war. (I assume WWI) since she married my granddaddy about 1919 and WWI ended around 1917. Her first beau owned a piano and said he wanted Grandma Coot to have it if he didn't return from the war. He didn't come home so his father brought the piano to Grandma Coot. She taught herself how to play. Daddy (Fred Douglas) used to sleep under the piano as a little boy with his brother, Ross. Daddy took pneumonia when he was 5. Grandma Coot was caring for him when she came down with pneumonia and died. She was about 7 months pregnant at the time.
