Pencader Presbyterian Church Pencader Hundred Glasgow, DE Pre 1723-Area first known as "Welsh Tract". Welsh Tract: all of what is now Pencader Hundred. Considerable territory-Cecil Co. Md; 1/5 of original tract in MD. There were two settlements called Welsh Tract. First in Pa. 01/13/1684, Penn granted to Welsh settlers 40,000 acres of land situated Chester, Delaware, & Montgomery Co. Pa.-known as the Welsh Tract. Welsh Presbyterian Church In Tredyffrin, Stoney Valley-Great Valley of Chester Co. Pa. This church was formed in Wales or Great Valley 1683-1710. Ore in Iron Hill , attracted settlers. These settlers petitioned Penn for a Tract of 30,000 acres; Which was granted on 10/09/1701 to David Evans, Wm. Davies, and Wm. Willis, and this being Our Welsh Tract of Delaware-all these grantees being from Radnor, Pa. Evans was an elder in the Church; son was first Pastor. Evans and Davies were Presidents of the Church (Many Welsh emigrated to Pa settlement in 1683) Welsh Tract Church-Pencader Church Yard-burials. Settlement followed rapidly, before the close of 1702 more than 11,000 acres of the new tract were Taken up. Adherents of the Great Valley Church (above) part of Pencader Church until 10/11/1714, Went on their own. A house was the first church-frame building 20 x 36, about 1706, JACOB FARIS,SR. one of the Trustees, grandfather of DAVID BRAINERD FERRIS, our senior elder helped to build the church and move it to the Southern part of the village where it has since been used as a dwelling, and Mrs. Margaret Black, the widowed sister of JACOB FARIS, and Mother of Dr. Samuel H. Black, was its first occupant. She died in 1831, aged 84 years (b-1747). ("got" is bought) Deed 1723; giving a corner for lands of Roger Williams which he got from John Harris, and Harris got from John Welsh and Welsh from the three grantees; Evans, Davies, and Willis. New Castle and Frenchtown Turnpike was chartered in 1809 and built soon after. One of the builders was JACOB FARIS. The bricks were burned on the farm of JACOB FARIS. 1787 Church incorporated Pencader Presbyterian Church. List of trustees included: JACOB FEARIS (FARIS) Buttonwood trees planted by JACOB FARIS (1782 or 1783) and his brother-in-law, Peter Williams. E. of Red Lion. It took its name from the small stream besides the site. This church was founded in 1727, as a chapel-of-ease for the members of New Castle Presbyterian Church. The church burned in 1760 and it was not rebuilt. By an act of the general assembly the trustees of the Presbyterian Graveyard at Pigeon Run were incorporated on February 1, 1849. The saplings and trees are gradually taking possession of the grave yard where interments have been made until quite recently. The oldest Tombstone is dated 1738. The Rev. Samuel Eakin, AM. Former paster of Pencader Church, who died in 1873, is buried beneath a flat slab.
