Theodore Berg moved with his family to Beardstown, IL in 1891 when he was 9 years old. He had a mind of his own and was difficult to discipline. He embarrassed his father on several occasions when he would go fishing with the Catholic priest and drink beer. At his father's urging he went to the Lutheran seminary in Springfield, Illinois to study for the ministry. Upon completing his courses he delivered a trial sermon and chose a controversial subject for his message. This upset the faculty and he was
dismissed from school without graduating. He went to Chicago and ultimately obtained a law degree from the University of Chicago. His first assignment as a lawyer was to collect delinquent rents for slum lords in the city. This was unappealing work, and he ultimately quit, becoming a travelling salesman for a baking powder firm in New Orleans. For months his whereabouts were unknown to the family. While on a sales trip to North Carolina in 1913 he met "Tilly" and settled in Aberdeen, North Carolina to marry and raise his family there. He sold real estate and insurance in Aberdeen, and for a time was Justice of the Peace there. After his wife's death he moved to Chicago to live with his daughter, Patricia, until his death.
