The
Richard Fancher Society is currently sponsoring a nationwide
open comment period to survey descendants of the Mountain Meadows
Massacre regarding their personal opinions related to the original burial site at the
Meadows dug by the emigrants of the Fancher Train and of the Baker Train before the
pioneer emigrants were led to their doom.
The results of this survey will be shared with the University of Arkansas
History and Anthropology Departments to formulate discussions with the current landowners
of the siege site, the LDS Church, to address the concerns and desires of the descendants
with respect to future historical investigations and commemorative issues at that site. The Richard
Fancher Society was originally established on August 28, 1949 on the Thomas Washington
Fancher homestead in Osage, Carroll County, Arkansas to formalize mutual family interests
in history and genealogical research. On September 4, 1955 this organization sponsored the
dedication of the monument to the victims and survivors of the Mountain Meadows Massacre
in Harrison, Arkansas. Richard Fancher, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, was the
grandfather of Captain Alexander Fancher, one of the victims at Mountain Meadows. It is in
this same spirit of preserving family history and traditions that the Richard Fancher
Society sponsors this inclusive survey to provide an opportunity for each descendant
family member to have an individual voice in sharing their opinions regarding specific
issues at the Mountain Meadows gravesite.
For those interested in obtaining a copy of the survey, you may write to
LM Fancher at 4064 SE Vernie Court, Milwaukie Oregon 97222 or email at Dixon@europa.com.
All descendants are invited and encouraged to participate.
