Host Server If you are using a free site from Rootsweb, your hosting server is rootsweb.com. Otherwise, your hosting server is whatever company is providing the space for your site. It might be one of the free page sites like Yahoo or Tripod, or your own company's server. Depending on the operating system running on your server (Unix, Linux, NT, etc.) there may be some differences in the way your files are named and in the kinds of utilities and tools that are available. Operating system The operating system is the software that tells a computer how to communicate with each of its devices (such as monitor, keyboard, disk drives, etc.), how to process the information it receives from them and how to format properly the information it sends to them. Common operating systems for personal computers are DOS, Windows and NT for IBM-compatible computers and the Mac OS for Macintosh computers. Larger commercial computers may use Unix or one of the other operating systems for IBM, DEC and other 'mainframe' systems. Many large network servers now also use Windows NT. The particular operating system used by a website host server determines, among other things, how files are named and stored. |
