From 'The First Hundred Years of Townville and Vicinity by Mary Ann Bidwell Higby pages 58-64. "Noah Town came to Crawford County from Granville, New York in 1822. He drove the covered wagon, drawn by two ox teams, which brought his household goods. His wife and four children rode in a one-horse wagon driven by Noah's cousin, Zephaniah Kingsley, Jr. They went to Meadville first. He went the next year out two miles east of Guys, to the home of Moses Gilbert, and remained there about two years, then returned to Meadville in 1825, where he remained until 1828, when he purchased land adjoining Zephaniah Kingsley, and built a log house close to Kingsley's house and brought his family there to live. Kingsley, Baker and Town had their homes on the road leading from Meadville to Centerville, which had been opened by the county as the township was not far enough advanced in organization to open roads. There was no road crossing this road at Kingsley's; it had not yet been opened.
Although the settlement was begun here it did not become the village. The village developed down by the big spring...In 1835 Town built down by the spring and the village soon afterward began to grow. The house is still standing....
Before 1846 Town built a store across the street, on the northwest corner. Just how long before that year he built the store I do not know, probably only a short time. That year, in deeds for land, the descriptions of the land say, 'north of Town's store,' and 'south of Town's store.' He continued the store here for nearly twenty years, dealing in the products of the people, and supplying them with the things they needed. He had purchased a large amount of land, and became prominent in the affairs of the settlement. He sold his land to the settlers as they came, and developed the place into a flourishing village. In 1860 he sold his store to his son-in-law George Benjamin Delamater, retiring from business; and 1864 he removed to Erie where he died April 26, 1867. His wife died at Erie, April 10, 1885." Mr. Town had been quite feeble for a number of months and his death was not unlooked for though it seemed sudden. He was one of Waupun's oldest and most respected citizens, for many years an active Odd Fellow and a conscientious Christian man. The funeral took place Monday from the house and was attended by a large number of people from this vicinity as well as brother Odd Fellows from other places. Also attended was H.S. Town former postmaster from Atwater to attend his uncles funeral. Buried in Cattaraugus Cemetery NE of Waupun WI."

He taught school a few terms in winter to enable him to continue at the academy. At twenty-one he was loaned a little money to enter into the mercantile business at Warren with his cousin, Daniel Russell. He continued there ten years, buying out his partner's interest after five years and then moved to Monson in 1862, and continued in the same business till 1874. During this period he was elected town clerk for several years until his removal to Springfield. He was also clerk of the Congregational parish and postmaster during General Grant's term. In Springfield, he was engaged in the wholesale tobacco and cigar manufacturing business with two others, doing a large business and employing one hundred and fifty persons.
He early joined the Masons, and took an active part in their councils for many years; became a thirty-second degree Mason in 1863, and was past master of many lodges.
Wrote and himself published in 1901, "The Descendants of William Towne".

David owned a saw mill and Andrew worked for him as a carpenter). She was born 1822 in Bagot21680, and died 1873 in Boulter, Ontario, Canada21681,21682. He ran away to Canada in 1825 to find a better life. His family thought that he had "died in the Canadian Wars" in 1828. Later, his brother Stephen, found out he was living and went to Canada in September 1856 to find him. Stephen got as far as Peterborough, Ontario, where he sickened, died and was buried at the Town Hall Cemetery. He was within 100 miles of Andrew's home at Lake Calabogie. Andrew told his family that he could not remember ever seeing Stephen because they did not grow up together. However, Andrew did name a son after Stephen in 1845. In the late 1830's or early 1840's, Andrew and Charlotte settled on Crown land in Bagot & Blythfield Township, specifically what is known as Barryvale, on Calabogie Lake. The Towns and Hunter families lived side by side. Andrew was the first Towns to appear on a Canadian Census in 1851. Little is known about his youth, but he was involved in the fur trade all of his life, as well as other endeavors.
Seven of Andrew and Charlotte's children are named after his father and his brothers and sisters. Andrew and Charlotte had 13 children and more than 70 grand children. The marriage of these two people has produced over 2000 descendents.

He married (2) JENNIE S./SUSAN JANE PUTNAM22095,22096 April 23, 186722096, daughter of DANIEL PUTNAM and ELIZABETH HALE. William Blanchard Towne was much interested in the anti-slavery cause. He held many offices of trust in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and was a representative in the New Hampshire legislature two years. He also was a director and president of a national bank at Milford. For twenty years, he was a member of James M. Beebe & Co., a large dry goods company in Boston. He became a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society September 15, 1852 and was a director and treasurer from 1861 to 1871.
He was a founder of the "Towne Memorial Fund," on 1 Jan. 1864 and gave the first $1,000 to establish it. The income from the fund was to be used to pubish memoirs of deceased members.
He made a tour of Europe in 1866, and it was during his time in England, the land of his ancestors, that he obtained a great deal of history and records on the Towne family. His general data on the family can be found in the first pages of Edwin Eugene Towne's, 1901 volume, "Descendants of William Towne." Also much of William's research in America on the Towne family was used in Edwin's volume.
He was the first to make any research into the history of the Towne family in this country or in England and his original work was written in long hand in beautiful handwriting. His original records can be viewed today at the NEHGS library in Boston. (About Towne Vol. XXII No.2 June 2002)
