Towne Family  5/5/2003

"The name of Towne is not one of the frequent occurences in England; the first mention of it is in A.D. 1227.  The next we hear the name is one hundred and thirty years later, in the reign of Henry IV, when upon thewindows of the church in Kennington, Kent Co., unpaled with that of Ellis of the same place, were the arms of a family by this name being, argent, ona chevron, a sable, three cross crosslets, ermine. The next reference to the name known to the writer, is in the county of Lincoln where it has existed for more than four hundred years."  (William Towne, his Daughters, and the Witchcraft Delusions by Mrs. Abbie W. Towne for the History of Topsfield)
Mr. Edwin Hubbard in his compilation The Towne Family says, "In this country, it is believed there are few families deriving their name from a single pair, that can show a larger number of descendants that William and Joanna Towne of Salem.  Counting only the descendants of the Towne daughters, of the first and second generations, a list of more than ten thousand might easily be made out, without coming down later than the earlier portion of the nineteenth century."  (George Towne book)

About Towne Vol. XXII No. 1 March 2002
"Editor's Note: In almost all Towne biographies and records on the children of William and Joanna (Blessing) Towne, it has always been stated that Joseph Towne, born in 1639, was their youngest child. Now TFA's outstanding genealogist Lois Payne Hoover, has established that Sarah Towne was born circa 1642. "The History of Topsfield, Massachusetts" by George Francis Dow published by the Topsfield Historical Society, 1940, reprinted 1999, pp. 324 has the following: "Sarah joined the village church in 1690, then being about 48 years of age." In the "Essex County Quarterly Court" records (Vol. 7:250) there is an entry where she deposed 3 June 1679 and states she was age thirty-seven. Lois also says, "This year of birth in 1642 makes her child bearing years more reasonable also." We are indebted to our genealogist for establishing a more correct age for Sarah."
At some point I found a birthdate for Sarah but am now unable to locate the source for that information - the date I had recorded was; born January 11, 1636/37 in Salem, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

Deacon DANIEL DAVIS was a farmer, and occupied the forty-acre lot on Oxford plain given him by his father, his home having been on the Sutton road near the mill brook. In the spring of 1752 he removed to Killingly, Conn., where he purchased a valuable farm and mill privilege on Five Mile river. He was much esteemed in his new home, serving as selectman, and in other public capacities, and also as deacon and committee of the church at Breakneck hill. After the death of his wife and the removal of his sons, he followed them to Thompson parish--originally a part of Killingly--where he owned a farm. Here he was beloved and honored, and allowed the privilege of building in the meeting-house a special pew "on the right hand side of the broad alley." He was considered a wise and prudent man, and his counsel was often sought in times of peril. A cause of great grief and sorrow in his old age was the fact of his kindred at Oxford having embraced the new doctrines of the Universalists. His family Bible and arm-chair are now in possession of Mrs. Harriet D. Palmer, a descendant, living at Great Barrington, Mass.
