Before December 1662,
this family was in Wiltwyck then a tiny, stockaded village where they became
members of the Wiltwyck Dutch Church on Dec. 16, 1662. They were among
the first settlers of the New Village known today as Hurley. Hurley
and when the Indians attacked on June 7, 1663, Jan Van Meteren and the
oldest boy, Gysbert Krom, were in the fields and hearing the shooting rushed
home, to find their house in flames. Maycke and 2 of the children were
taken by the Indians. Capt. Martin Cregier led an expedition against the
Indian forts in September of that year and all the captives were returned
to their homes. On November 18, 1664 there was a court proceeding in which
Director-General Peter Stuyvesant sued Jan Joosten for "pasage money for
taking him, wife, children and baggage in schepels of oats, 51/2 schepes
of summer barley, 4 schepels of summer wheat, and for the loss of horses,"
and for "butter from two cows for two years," all part of Jan's contract
with the West India Company to assist his setlement at Kinston." They later
migrated to New Jersey.

1686, Gysbert Krom along with John Westbrook and Col. Henry Pawling received
144 acres at Coxsink. He was a
foot soldier in 1670. In an Indian treaty made by
Indians and Colonel Richard Nicolls, the first English governor of the
Province of New York, dated Feb. 23, 1681, his name appears as a witness.
In 1700, he was a lieutenant of foot soldiers in the Militia. About 1703;
Gysbert Krom desires a conveyance for 8 acres of fly and upland lying on
the east side or end of the fifth Binnewater; granted. Lieut. Gysbert Crom
Trustee 1705, Marbletown. On April 23, 1705 he conveyed to Jan Joosten
van Meteren of the City of New York his interest in the estate of Jan Joosten
which was bequethed unto him. The grantee was the grandson of Jan Joosten,
his stepfather. April 12, 1709 Gysbert Krom desired a conveyance for a
fly on the end of the burt Crepelbush, and a parcel of fly lying by the
fourth Binnewater. 1707-1709; Lieut. Gysbert Crom Assistant Trustee.
He was listed as an old man and officer on the military roll of Marbletown
in 1709. Took the oath required of the foreign born at Kingston in
1715. He was a large landholder in Marbletown, inheriting some of his property
from his stepfather.

New York. In the fall of 1776 served one month in Captain Hendrick Schoonmaker's
Company, immediately afterward he served one month in Captain Ransom's
company from about the first of June 1777, served two months in Captain
John Hasbrouck's company in Colonel Levi Paulding's regiment. He served
six weeks in Captain John Hasbrouck's company in Colonel Hoornbeek's regiment.
In the spring of 1778, he served two months in Captain Frederick Schoonmaker's
company. In the fall of 1778 he served three and one half months in Captain
Frederick Schoonmaker's company. He was allowed pension on his application
executed December 11, 1832. September 10, 1812; marched in the half-century
celebration at Kingston at the age of 58. In 1840, he was living with James
