Generation No. 3
B. FRANCIS5 PHIPPS (GEORGE4, ROBERT3) was
born Abt. 1610, of Reading, England, and died 1667 in England.
He married AVIS widow of FOSTER and HICKS. He married 1643, ANN SHARPE
of Cirencester, England. Owned the Bear Inn of Reading, purchased abt 1640.
1643, imprisoned by Parliamentarians. His Friend Constantine Skinner was
the start of the use of Constantine in the family.
"Francis Phipps, the elder, of Reading, in the county
of Berkshire, mentions son Constantine Phipps, in his will proved 1668."
Buried: February 10, 1667/68 (Constantine Phipps later became a Barrister
and assisted Sir William Phips, his cousin, when he was jailed in London
in the 1690's) Ann Sharpe Phipps married 2) JOHN JEAFFERSON, born 1609
in the West Indies. Colonel John Jeaffreson first married Mary daughter
of Aden Parkyns, Esq. of Bunney, Nottinghamshire Co., England after his return
to England from St. Kitts Island and they had two children: Mary and Christopher
(1650-1725). After Mary's death he married 2nd to Widow Phipps and had stepsons,
James and Sir Constantine Phipps. Colonel John would later participate in
the 1653 Anglo-Dutch Battle by commanding the merchant ship, "William and
Mary" with 140 men. Christopher fell heir to the Dullingham Manor in Cambridge
after his father's death and married Miss Gamiell, daughter of Col. George
Gamiell, who died shortly after their marriage and there were no children.
In 1676 he left for St. Kitts in the West Indies, which in 1624 his father,
his uncle Samuel, and Sir Thomas Warner had gone to establish. Even though
Christopher did not have any children, there were Jeaffreson relatives, including
one by the name of Christopher, living at Dullingham House later. Mary,
sister of Christopher, 1st married Charles Brett in Westminister Abbey in
1673 and married 2nd Mr Lewis and 3rd Mr Morgan. Mary died June 30, 1703.
Colonel John acquired much land around the area including an estate of Roushall
in the Clopton Parish, lands in Woodbridge, Wickham Market, Felixstowe, Trimley
and Easton and was a very wealthy man. His brother Samuel Jeafferson was
the ancestor of Thomas Jefferson the US President from Virginia.

Did James and Mary have a son Richard Phipps?
Richard was a soldier in the garrison at Fort Loyal - he deserted to Captain
Pound's Company and was wounded in the head at Tarpaulin Cove (at
the entrance of Boston harbor on the E. side of Nanshon Island, the largest
of the Elizabeth Islands of Massachusetts). Later he was imprisoned
at Boston Prison and perhaps died there as he was not brought to trial with
the others in 1690. He was called a pirate. If he was not James
and Mary's son, who was he?
And who is the John
Phipps of this generation found in Port Royal, a known pirate rendezvous
site?
