First
read the Parkhill legend and some notes on the Parkhill lines.
Parkhill is the 13,195th most popular last name in
the United States.
Generation No. 1
1.
HUGH?1 PARKHILL. It is possible this man's name was Hugh.
The Parkhill legend records a Hugh as one of the original imigrants.
Some think he is synonomous with the Robert found at Leicester, MA in 1765,
but that seems unlikely. A Hugh Parkhill IS found at the parish of
Glendermot, barony of Tyrkeering, co. Londonderry, Ireland in 1740 Householder's
Census. There has been no record found of a Hugh Parkhill
during my research. If we are to believe
in the theory of 4 brothers immigrating, here is my proposal;
Children of HUGH? PARKHILL are:
2. i. DAVID2 PARKHILL, b. Abt. 1724, Ireland;
d. 1794, of Franklin township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania.
ii. NATHANIEL PARKHILL, died early or
stayed in Ireland?
3. iii.
ROBERT
PARKHILL, b. Bef. 1740, Ireland (of Leicester & Weston, Massachusetts);
d. Abt. 1766, of Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
iv. JAMES PARKHILL, of Pennsylvania?
There is no proof of the above lineage - this is
only conjecture. It is obvious to me that some of the earlier genealogies
I have seen of this family are incorrect based on the probate records of
Robert Parkhill found in Worcester Co., Massachusetts, the pension
records of James, David and Nathaniel Parkhill (Robert's sons), and the
Massachusetts vital records.
I also find it unlikely that this family immigrated
about 1740 due to no record of any of the family being found in New England
or Pennsylvania before 1757. I have done a fairly thorough search of Massachusetts
vital records and the first record I have found in New England is the marriage
of Jane Parkhill and Ebenezer Robinson in 1757. It seems significant
that the next records found are of Robert and David who first appear in
the 1760s. Perhaps the family actually appeared in the US in the
1750's, or perhaps they were living elsewhere and no one has yet
researched those areas for Parkhills (maybe landing in NY and spreading
south and east from there?). I find it difficult to believe however,
that 2 of these brothers would have gone to PA (David and James), while
one went to MA (Robert). I think it more likely that there is only
a distant connection (if any connection) between the MA and the PA lines.
If anyone has information on these lines prior to 1757 in the US, please
contact me.
Generation No. 2
Family
of James Parkhill, born about 1750.
Where
does he fit into all of this?
2. DAVID2 PARKHILL (HUGH?1) was born Abt.
1724 in Ireland1, and died 1794, of
Franklin township, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania2. He married
MARTHA MURRAY August 29, 1768 in Adams Co., Pennsylvania3,
daughter of JEREMIAH MURRAY and SARAH. Abt.
1740, Ireland to US - returned to Ireland for several years4,
then
1775, to Fayette Co., PA
1779; York Co., PA? 1779; Bedford Co., PA?
"In the fall of 1782, David Parkhill (who had come
to America during the Revolution) settled in Dunbar upon land that joined
Joshua Dickinson and Joseph Oglevee's. Although a strong covenanter,
his blood arose in resentment at the thought of the troubles worked by
Indian depredations, and at the head of a company of his neighbors sallied
out one Sunday morning to hunt and punish the savages. The enemy
had taken the alarm, and luckily for themselves fled beyond the reach of
the determined pioneers. Mr. Parkhill's wife lived until she had
rounded out a century of existence. She died in 1842." ("The History
of Fayette County" published 1882 by L.H. Everts and Co., Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, Dunbar Township, page 505.)
1783; Westmoreland, PA? 1785-1793 - listed on
tax rolls for Franklin and Dunbar townships, Fayette Co., PA February
20, 1787; David and Martha purchased land of the Wm. Findley original land
grant - recorded in Deed Book B, p. 203.
Will dated Jan. 9, 1794 and probated Feb. 13, 1794.
Will provided for wife Martha the profits of the plantation for the support
and schooling of the five youngest children.
To daughter Sara, 20 shillings
To son John 10 pounds
To Mary 1 horse, 1 saddle, 1 feather bed and furniture,
1 milch cow
To James and David that plantation which I purchased
of Wm. Findley on the waters of Loyalhanning in Westmoreland County to
be divided equally between them provided they have lived on the plantation
until they attain 22 years.
To Martha and Elizabeth, 1 horse and saddle, 1 feather
bed and furniture and 1 milch cow at age 18, then plantation to revert
to sons John, William and Hugh and care of wife Martha for her natural
lifetime.
Wife Martha, James Rankin and John Hamilton appointed
executrix and executors. Witnessed by Samuel R. Rankin, Matt. Gilchrist
and John Pattison; Power of Attorney witnessed by Samuel R. Rankin, Matt
Gilchrist and John Parkhill
On page 508 of the same book (History of Fayette Co.), from a list of taxpayers in Fayette Co. in 1799. "Widow Parkhill was taxed on two horses, six cattle and one hundred acres." 1795-1808 Martha listed on tax rolls of Franklin and Dunbar townships, Fayette Co., PA
I think this 1740 date with return to England unlikely. Especially given the fact that he was said to 'come to America during the Revolution', in the History of Fayette County. However - with a birthdate of 1724 - he seems rather old for a first marriage in 1768. Does anyone know of an earlier marriage or is this the incorrect David Parkhill who married Martha Murray?

know her surname? "Mary, wife of Robert PARKHILL, died October
26, 1800, aged 89." (History of Rutland County
Vermont: with Illustrations & Biographical Sketches of Some of Its
Prominent Men and Pioneers)

TAYLOR ROCKWELL, January 23, 181253. Rockwell's Mills
is the name of a post-office and station on the New Berlin Branch of the
Midland Railroad, about a mile above Mt. Upton, both of which derive their
name from the mills of Chester Rockwell located there. The history of these
mills has been given previous to the time when they came into the possession
of Mr. Erastus Rockwell, in 1849. Mr. Rockwell found the property in a
neglected condition. He repaired the old machinery, and added new. He also
enlarged the building, and made a success of a business which had hitherto
been unprofitable. In 1862 he sold to his brother, Chester W. Rockwell,
who continued the business successfully till 1870, when the building was
burned. In that year he became associated with David B. Fitch and Erastus
Rockwell, under the name of Rockwell, Fitch & Co., and the mills were
rebuilt, a portion of the old walls being used in the present structure.
Messrs. Fitch and Erastus Rockwell withdrew at the expiration of about
two years, and Howard C., son of Chester W. Rockwell, was admitted to partnership.
The business has since been conducted under the name of C. W. Rockwell
& Co. The firm had on their books the names of over 1,200 customers
and the patronage of about forty towns in the counties of Chenango, Otsego,
and Delaware. The saw-mill connected with this property is a separate building.
The mills are operated by water from the Unadilla, with a fall of 4 1/2
feet. The business employs a capital of about $50,000. The Messrs. Rockwell
also keep a grocery, which was started by them in 1870. This business,
though occupying a somewhat retired location, is one of Chenango county's
chief manufacturing industries. The postoffice here was established
in February, 1874, and Howard C. Rockwell, who was then appointed postmaster,
has since held the office. (History of Chenango and Madison Counties, New
York) Their children were; Howard C., Mary, Lorinda, Martha, Silas, Laura
Maria and Chloe.

PARKILL, _____
A melancholy loss of life by drowning occurred at
Essex, on Friday last. A number of lads were skating on the lake, which
had frozen over the night before. One of them,
a son of H. W. PARKILL, Esquire, of Essex, broke in, and his younger brotherattempted
to go to his assistance with a board, but before he reached him, the ice
gave way, and he also went down. An uncle of
the boys ran to their aid, and had nearly succeeded in saving one, but
the ice was too weak to bear his weight, andhe with difficulty saved himself.
The bodies were recovered very soon after, but all efforts to restore animation
provedunavailing.
The parents of the children were absent from home
at the time. Their ages were 11 and 14 years, and they were the onlychildren
of Mr. Parkhill.
A large assembly was present at their funeral on Sunday.
The whole community sympathise with the afflicted parents at theirheart-rending
bereavement. The accident should be a warning to boys, who are quite too
thoughtless and hasty in venturingupon unsafe ice. The Elizabethtown Post
