Messinger burials - Peterboro Cemetery
In Consideration of Six dollars to me in hand paid
by John M. Messinger & James S. Messinger of Lenox & Smithfield
I give grant & convey to them and to their heirs and assigns forever
Lot Number Fifty one on the East sides of the main avenue or Central Street
in Peterboro Cemetery. To have and hold the same to them, their heirs and
assigns forever, hereby covenanting to Warrant & defend the same against
all claims and demands whatsoever. Witness my hand and seal this 30th day
of Sept. 1848-In presence of Caleb Culkins

Deed handwritten underneath "Gerit Smith was well known for his underground
slave station and other antislave activities. His
house in Peterboro, NY was later burned. Fred Messinger married
his daughter Nancy and moved to Chicago (this was
incorrect. Fred did move to Chicago, but was not married to a daughter
of Gerrit Smith)
