  Joseph Phipps, b. June 24, 1769

After the 2nd marriage of his father, Joseph disliked his stepmother who was subject to fits of derangement.  Joseph went into the service during the Revolution and  to help supress the Rebellion of 1787.  When his father died, he took over the farm at Phipp's hill.  On his step - mother's death and before 1800, he sold the homestead and with considerable property left and settled in Lee, Onieda Co. N.Y. where he was a successful farmer until a friend didn't repay a debt.  As a result he lost everything - including the site of the main part of the future city of Utica, N.Y.. Unproductive seasons and unforseen forces then left him dependent on his own energies to see to the survival of his family.  He lived in Albion, N.Y. the last 9 years of his life, residing with his daughter.  (The Early Planters of Sherborn, Holliston and Medway, Massachusetts)

Military Service: 1775, Rev. War - 4th regiment Colonel Hinman's Co. Continental regiments. Captain Starr's Co., securing Fort Ticonderoga, N.Y..  Shays Rebellion of 1787.

June 10, 1793;  "Received 15 pounds 1 __ in full for portion of estate of our Honorable Father's estate.." signed by Aaron, Moses, William, John, and Joseph  (Middlesex Co. Probate)

1800, 00120-31010-00 - Lee, Onieda Co., New York. Once owned site of city of Utica.650
