He became a trusted leader in politics and in 1852

Invented the platform scale which revolutionized weighing
methods that had been in use since the beginning of recorded history.
Because of the Fairbanks family's philanthropic bent, the ity of St. Johnsbury
with a distinctly 19th century industrial feel has a strong cultural and
architectural imprint.
Opening in 1891, the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium
attests to the families inquisitiveness about all things scientific.
The red brick building in the squat Romanesque style of H.H. Richardson
houses eclectic collections of Vermont plants and animals and an intimate
50 seat planetarium. At Main and Prospect streets. (Fodor's
New England 1997)]
Thaddeus FAIRBANKS, was born on 17 January 1796 and
from early on in life his mechanical genius was evident. He had many patents
for cook stoves, plows, and his most famous was the platform scale, patented
in 1831. He received 43 patents in his lifetime, the last at
age 91. The Emperor of Austria knighted him and he
received many foreign awards but his only ambition was that he be accepted
by God. St. Johnsbury Academy owes its fine buildings, for the most part,
to his devotion to public benevolence. He died on 12 April 1886.
Burial: St. Johnsbury, Vermont, Mt. Pleasant Cemetary.
1826, received patent on cast iron plow, refrigerator.
1831, received patent on platform scale - business
began to specialize in these.
