Conservatory
Phipps Conservatory was a gift to the City of Pittsburgh
from
industrialist/philanthropist, Henry Phipps. A friend
and partner of Andrew
Carnegie, Henry Phipps made his fortune in steel and
real estate.
Henry Bessemer
In an effort to encourage and capitalize on the entrepreneurial
spirit, Henry Phipps,
one of Carnegies's original business partners, established
in 1911 what was to become Bessemer Securities Corporation
(Bessemer Venture Partner's principal limited partner)
as an investment firm for the benefit
of his descendants, starting with his share of the
proceeds from the sale of Carnegie Steel.
Westbury
House
Westbury House was the country estate of financier
and sportsman John
Shaffer Phipps (1874-1958) and his wife, Margarita
Grace Phipps (1876-1957).
Mr. Phipps was the son of Henry Phipps
Sept. 14 -- Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeds to the White House after the assassination of President William McKinley. At that time, the country's 4,000 millionaires represent about 1/20,000th of the population, but possess 20 percent of the nation's wealth. A number live in Pittsburgh, including Thomas Mellon, Andrew Mellon, Henry John Heinz, George Westinghouse, Henry Clay Frick, Charles Martin Hall, Henry Phipps and Charles M. Schwab.
