Generation No. 2
2. NATHANIEL2 HEALY (WILLIAM1) was born
Abt. 16581 Christened: February
06, 1657/581, and died June 02, 1734
in Cambridge, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts1. He married
REBECCA HAGAR July 14, 1681, daughter of WILLIAM HAGAR and MARY BEMIS.
She was born October 29, 1661 of Roxbury, Massachusetts, and died January
06, 1733/34. They were charter members
of the West Roxbury church and are buried in West Roxbury. He was made
a Freeman in 1690. Nathaniel Hesly was a soldier of Capt. Nathan Davenport's
Company in King Philip's Indian War, and was wounded in the Narragansett
Fight December 19, 1675. He settled in Newton in 1688 at the age
of 30 years, where he purchased of Jonathan Jackson, Sr., 26 1/2 acres
of land near Watertown. The soldiers of the Narragansett Fight, or their
heirs, were promised a gratuity of land besides their wages for driving
the Indians out of the Narragansett area, but this promise was not carried
out until many years later. The grant finally alloted the heirs of Nathaniel
Healy, called Narragansett Grant No. 4, was in Chesterfield, Mass. and
in 1764 his grandson Joshua 4 Healy, son of Joshua 3 of Dudley, took possession
of the crown land granted to his grandfather.
Philip White and 6 of his neighbors became involved
in a long standing controversy regarding their membership at the church
in Newton. According to the town records, Philip and his neighbors
complained that they lived four and a half to five miles from Newton meeting
house and attending the church there was a hardship. In 1705 he and
six neighbors (William Ward, Edward Ward, Nathaniel Healy, Daniel Colburn,
Benjamin Wilson, and Elizabeth Bacon) petitioned the town to move the meeting
house to a more central location because otherwise they chose to attend
the Roxbury church since it was closer to them. Their petition was
not accepted. Eight years later in 1713, the above neighbors with
the exception of Benjamin Wilson, again petitioned to divide the town into
two precincts so that another meeting house could be built closer to them.
The outcome of this petition was that the Court saw no cause to divide
the town nor to move the meeting house, but in recognition of the petitioners
hardship, advised Newton to allow the petitioners to worship in Roxbury.
Eleven years later, in 1722, Newton sued Philip White and his neighbors
for refusing to support the Newton church, and incarcerated some of them.
The petitioners again brought the issue before the Court. In December
of that year, Newton petitioned the Court to have the six families come
back to Newton because they had built a new meeting house much closer to
them.
Nathaniel's will, made 5/4/1731, names his wife Rebecca;
sons Ebenezer, John, and Joshua; daughters Rebecca Thwing, Abigail Brackett,
Mary Mayo, Martha Baboock, Lydia Avery, Hannah Young, and the children
of his deceased son Samuel. He appointed his sons Ebenezer and John executors.
He was a wheelwright and his estate was inventoried at 1233# 4s 9d.

He married (1) ABIGAIL CARTUR30 September 09, 1756 in Dudley,

and MARY. He married (2) ABIGAIL PEPPER

Nathaniel Healy owned a farm on the Healy Road in
Dudley, built for him by his brother Josiah Healy in 1760. An old map shows
that nearly all the farms along this road at that time were owned by Healys.
The homestead was purchased by a descendant, Samuel Morris Conant and restored
to its original Colonial splendor, thereby perpetuating the name of Major
Nathaniel Healy who did his part for the cause of America in the Revolutionary
War. Nathaniel Healy served in Dudley as road surveyor, constable, selectman,
and on the school, and other committees, until 1791.
1775; Captain Revolutionary War - answered call to
Lexington with his minutemen April 19, 1775, regiment commanded by Ebenezer
Learned. Immediately after the battle they reported to Cambridge,
and with Colonels Prescott and Warren were ordered to join General Thomas
at Roxbury. (History of Dudley, Worcester Co., Massachusetts)
January 13, 1778 ; finds him in command of the 2nd
company of Dudley. Continental army 2nd company. (History of Worcester
Co.)
Major Nathaniel Healy's sword, carried by him in the
Revolutionary War, was in the possession of his son, Deacon William Healy,
who gave it to Daniel Lyon Healy, who took it to Iowa when he moved there
in 1838. In turn it descended to Abiel L. Healy, then to Mary Ellen
Healy who married Mr. Samuel Wise of Wilton, Iowa. In 1923 her son,
George Chester Wise, owned the sword.

Healy was an inveterate practical joker and was known throuthout the Dudley
section for his many pranks. About the last prank he played was leaving
home and having information sent back to his father that he had died.
When he returned and rapped on the door his father opened it and said:
"Ezra you are dead" and shut the door in his face. He married at
the age of 22 and settled in Vermont near Lake Champlain; died at
an early age. His children were; 1. LAURA HEALY, b. November 04,

AMOS MORGAN September 05, 1816, son of TIMOTHY MORGAN. He died December
12, 1843. Laura Healy Morgan was very small and jolly, with a very high
forehead. She was very brave and the best "marksman" in the county.
She was presented with a valuable rifle on account of her marksmanship,
and she always kept it loaded and hanging on the wall. It was the
one thing others were not allowed to touch. Her husband, being a
surveyor, was away weeks at a time while she remained at home with
her small children. There were many Indians in the vicinity but they
were always very respectful to her. She also did exceptionally fine
needlework. Their children were; 1. ALOYCIUS MORGAN, b. June 22,

Morgan was short in stature, very jolly, and a genuine Healy, of whom it
was said: "They would rather miss a meal than a good joke." He owned
a line of steams out of Detroit and was the originator of the towing system,
with barges, used on the Great Lakes. The public said it couldn't
be done but he proved it could. His daughter Hattle wrote, "General Sherman
rode on my father's boat, a passenger steamer between Chicago and Grand
Haven, Mich. He complimented my father on his fine landings, saying they
were the finest he had ever seen." He had; SARAH L. MORGAN b. 10/22/1846,

He was a farmer and lived on the old homestead where the family,
among the first pioneers of River Falls, moved in 1857. His passing was
a personal loss to the whole community where he had been a helpful
friend to all his neighbors. When the Civil War
broke out he was one of the first to respond, and
it seemed eminently fitting that those who had stood beside him in
battle should be the ones to stand by his casket at the last and
pay final tribute to a fallen comrade. (River Falls News) EMILY HEALY,

was traveler, author, historian, and collector. He was a member of the
New England Historic Genealogical Society, the American Antiquarian Society,
and others. He purchased the Major Nathaniel Healy homestead in Dudley
where he had spent a great deal of time when a boy, and restored it to
its original Colonial condition, for he said he loved the historical
old homestead more than he loved his palatial home in New York. He named
it Keekamoochaug, the Indian name for the land around Dudley, which translated
means "Echo of Falling Waters." During his evening walk in New York City,
he had become acquainted with Big Chief Tacomus, sagamore of the Mohawk
tribe--the finest-wooden cigar store Indian in the U.S.A., who stood for
more than thirty years in front of a tobacco store on Bleecker Street.
His haughty headdress of eagle feathers proclaimed him more than an ordinary
chieftain, and Mr. Conant bought him to stand outside Keekamoochaug, overlooking
the site of the last Indian Village in Dudley. The ancient farmstead is
literally a storehouse of valuable historical articles, including many
Revolutionary War relics and souvenirs of all descriptions from all over
the world, which would take a catalog of many pages to describe. It is
open to visitors the year around, with a farm manager, and wife as housekeeper,
always in charge; and there is a register book for visitors to sign. From

He served as Town Clerk, Assessor, Selectman, and Representative.
He was Proprietor of the Inn in Dudley for many years. They lived
on the old Major Nathaniel Healy Farm, or Keekamoochaug Farm, purchased
and restored by Samuel Morris Conant. Lem was a dark complectioned
man with twinkling eyes, black curly hair, and a beard--filled with folklore
and witticism--the center of life around him. When his young nephew,
Samuel Conant, met him for the first time Lem said "Do you know who I
am, my boy?...I'm General Grant." As Grant at the time was the nation's
hero, and president, Samuel was somewhat surprised to find him in Dudley,
and on the steps of his uncle's house; but from then on a deep-lasting
friendship existed between them. Lem and his father, Captain Lem before
him, were Just, God-fearing men, particularly strict to avoid criticism
and to discredit gossip. Samuel Conant composed the following lines in
their honor, to put on the wall of the old homestead: "Bring here
no tattle in Nor take none out So may the Love of God Dwell in this
house." Lem and Libby celebrated their golden wedding anniversary

34. DANIEL LYON6 HEALY (WILLIAM5, NATHANIEL4, JOSHUA3, NATHANIEL2, WILLIAM1)240 was born December 26, 1792 in Dudley, Worcester Co., Massachusetts241 Christened: October 05, 1800, Dudley, Worcester Co., Massachusetts243, and died May 14, 1850 in Moscow, Iowa. He married TRIPHENA KIDDER February 02, 1817, daughter of JEDEDIAH KIDDER and CHLOE FOSTER. She was born October 03, 1791 in Wardsborough, Vermont, and died July 07, 1861 in Moscow, Iowa. She was a descendant of James Kidder of England; of Cambridge, Mass. 1649, and later Ipswich. Daniel Lyon Healy was born on the Deacon William Healy homestead in Dudley where he lived as a boy. When a young man he taught school in Dudley. After his marriage he kept the Old Black Horse Tavern in the village, which was directly opposite the Conant Memorial Church. Stages made the Tavern their stopping place, which, with its ballroom, was a feature of Dudley social life. It was originally called The Black Tavern for the very good reason that its color was black. Its owner, with Yankee shrewdness, had discovered that black paint wore longer than any other color. He made several changes after giving up the Tavern, and in the spring of 1838 prepared to move his family of seven growing boys and one girl to Cedar County, Muscatine, Iowa on the Mississippi River, which was a considerable task before the days of railroads. From Southbridge, Mass., they went to Providence, R.I. and from there to New York City by boat; up the Hudson River to Albany; thence through the Erie Canal to Buffalo; on to Cincinnati; down the Chio River and up the Mississippi to Muscatine, where the household goods and personal belongings they managed to take with them were moved by team to their new home.

a meal. Evidently he had been reaching for a fork when it happened.
