Descendants of John Goodenow
Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN1 GOODENOW1,2,3 was born in England4,5,6 and died January 07, 1592/93 in Ebbsborne Wake, Wiltshire, England7,8,9.  He married MARGARET10,11,12.

Will of John Goodenow
"Since typically in those times a will was likely to be prepared within weeks of a death, then we might surmise John's will was prepared 18 Nov. 1592 since John died "January 07, 1592/93".  If such an assumption is correct, then using your transcription we can infer approximate birth dates of two or three of his children!  He cites William, Thomas, and Julyan with legacies to "be delivered unto my said children at the age of Seventeen years."  Using the will date as 1592 then William, Thomas, and Julyan might have been born after 1592-17=1575 and may have been born after 1576 ("age 16").  On the other hand, since William and Richard are named "overseers" could both these two sons be older than 16 or 17?  However, if we assume William, Thomas, and Julyan were born beginning 1575 we might have William b. 1575, Thomas b. 1577, and Julyan born 1579 with Richard born before about 1573!"   (Thanks to  Gene for puzzling out these dates!)

Children of JOHN GOODENOW and MARGARET are:

"John Goodnow, for example, a Wiltshire man, had grants of roughly 100 acres of plowland, upland and meadow, scattered all over the the town plot.  When he collected the hay from all his meadow strips, he had to travel a minimum of eleven miles.  But he still preferred to work in co-operative agricultural groups, just as the farmers in his old village of Donhead St. Andrew were doing at the time, and always had done. With the possible exception of meat and milk sold, Goodnow, in the first years probably used an economic philosophy which calculated in terms of the production of food for his family and for his animals, not cash, for crops sold."  Puritan Village The Formation of a New England Town  Chilton Sumner Powell

4.  THOMAS3 GOODENOW (THOMAS2, JOHN1)164,165,166 was born Abt. 1608 of Donhead, St. Andrew, Wiltshire, England167,168,169, and died October 05, 1666 in Marlborough, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts170,171,172.  He married (1) JANE RUDDICK173,174,175 Abt. 1631 in England176,177,178.  She was born 1611 of Shaftesbury, Wiltshire, England179,180,181, and died June 16, 1666 in Concord, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts?182,183,184.  He married (2) JOANNA185,186,187 1662188,189,190.  Called in the clearance of Shaftesbury, a borough of Dorset, border of Wiltshire202,203,204.  He brought with him his wife Jane; his son Thomas, then one year old; and sister Ursula, all from Shaftesbury, England, in the borough of Dorset on the border of Wiltshire, three or four miles from the former homes of his brothers. Thomas returned to England to get his brother Nathaniel and returned in 1656 in the ship "Speedwell."
Thomas also settled in Sudbury, and was one of the proprietors in 1639, selectman in 1639, and later in Sudbury and again in Marlboro in 1661, 1662, and 1664. April 1639; appointed as fence viewer for Sudbury with Edmund Rice, Robert Darvell, and Andrew Belcher.   (Puritan Village The Formation of a New England Town - Powell) He was admitted a freeman of Sudbury, May 10, 1643. He was a petitioner for the Marlboro Plantation, and moved there at its settlement.   At least two of his children were born in Sudbury, Thomas and Mary, who were born August 25, 1640. The house of his son, Samuel, who was born in 1646, was one of the Marlboro garrison houses. Mary was killed and scalped by the Indians in 1707.
His will was dated September 29, 1666, and proved October 24 following. He bequeathed to daughter Susanna and Jane; "to Loveing Yoak fellow Joane;" to son Samuel and all his grandchildren: brothers John Rudduck, Edmund Goodnow and old brother Ward appointed overseers of the will.   His wife and the mother of his children was Jane. It is possible that the yoke-fellow mentioned in his will was Jane, misspelled, rather than a second wife Joanna, as some have read it.   His homestead in Marlboro was bounded north and west by the highway, south by the house lot of Joseph Rice, east by Indian Hill, or the line of the Indian planting field.
