The Fairbanks Family

There are a lot of problems with the Fairbanks genealogies currently available on the web and in print.  Each researcher has a different version of the ancestry of our American immigrants.
There currently is a project to expand and correct the Sayles genealogy of the Fairbanks families. We can only hope it will clarify some of the erroneous material out there.
Because of this I am not going to present my version of the earliest generations of the Fairbanks family, but will wait until there is good solid evidence found.  I will start with the family after immigration to the US.

Origin and Meaning of the Name Fairbanks.
"In French, it is transliterated beaumont.  In fact, the English is transliterated from the French.  In high German it is Montbadden.  Originally the name was singular, as in Beaumont and Montbadden.  It was rendered Fayerbanke, and several other spellings, as the names had not yet been standardized.  For our purposes, we will begin with Robert de Beaumont, who came across the English Channel in the Norman Invasion of 1066 with William the Conquerer.  Robert was a nobleman of great stature, and enjoyed status and prestige in the Norman Kingdom as did his family in this and the subsequent Plantagenet Dynasty.  The Plantagenet Dynasty lasted from Henry II to Edward, who was overthrown by a conspiracy.  In the ensuing battles for supremacy among the contenders to the throne, the Beaumont family refused to support any other than the legitimate heir, but Henry Tudor won and established himself as king.  Because of the presence of many of like mind as the Beaumonts in Parliament, Henry VII was forced to rule frugally, in order not to have to ask Parliament for additional funding, because he knew they would circumscribe his powers.  During this period of time, William took the transliterated name Fairbanks to provide cover for his family, and to protect them from retribution from King Henry VII.  So our first encounter with the name Fairbanks happens in 1492, when William "took land of the soil and waste of the Lord, in Sowerby, to hold according to the custom of the manor." (8th Henry VII) We know that William was a nobleman because of his taking land, a thing prohibited to the commoner.  In 1504 he transferred land to his son John.  Land transfers in 1526 and 1550 name Gilbert as a son of John.  Gilbert is another fascinating individual.  A part of the coalition that brought down the government of King Charles, who was beheaded in a botched public ceremony, he refused to pay the stipend of the minister or curate of the chapel.  His dispute with the Church was born with the actions of King Henry VIII, and continued during the Cromwellian revolution that ultimately ended in 1560 with the re-establishment of the Kingdom with James II on the throne.  Gilbert was one of the so-called "Ranters", who, with the overthrow of  King Charles I, swore that no man would be their king, but God, and demanded the right to worship according to the dictates of their own conscience and to be guided by the Holy Ghost.  So deep was their mistrust of government that they even refused to appoint any man minister.  Out of this tradition came the Quakers of American history.  You can see a consistency of action coming out of the Fairbanks/Beaumont family, that would continue to this day.
That brings us to Jonathan Fairbanks who built the ancestral family home in Dedham, Massachusetts in 1636, crafted and signed the Dedham Covenant and covenanted his heirs thereunto.
The number of times that the royal Beaumont and Plantagenet lines cross is highlighted by the following information:  In the 14th Century, Eleanor Plantagenet, the granddaughter of Henry III married John de Beaumont, uniting formally the families of the Plantagenet and Norman Dynasties.  Eleanor's sister Joan married John de Mowbray, tying together the great Braose (Bruce) and Mowbray families.  These two lines (Eleanor's and Joan Plantagenet's) would be tied together again when the third generation Sir Robert Howard married Margaret de Mowbray."  (From a speech given by Joseph Neil Fairbanks to an LDS High Priest Group in Nampa, Idaho on Fathers' Day, 1997)

Died March 2 1758, aged about 84, according to the inscription on his tombstone, which would make his birth later than 1670. He was a very efficient soldier and officer in the Indian wars, and was no doubt incited to heroic exploits by the massacre of his father and brother, in 1676 and his only surviving brother in 1697.  During the raid upon the town in 1697, when his brother Jonathan and one of the latter's children were slain, he was the means of saving a garrison and perhaps many lives, including that of his "littlle son", probably Joseph.  In all, outside the garrison, twenty-one persons were killed, two wounded, and six were carried away as captives, of whom returned.  Among the captives returned was the wife of Jonathan.
He was a famous scouting officer, and traversed large sections of the country around Lancaster in search of prowling Indians. He reported directly to Gov. Drummer during this war with the Indians and the published correspondence between them furnishes many interesting chapters of history. See Mass. Archives and Marvins History of Lancaster.
