March
23, 1848; "Died in Essex, N.Y. on the morning of the 16th of March
1848, Col. Ezra Parkill aged 63 years. Col. Parkill was one
of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of this villlage. Originally
from Massachusetts, he became an inhabitant of Essex in the year 1808.
During his long residence here, he sustained the fair reputation
of an industrious, peaceable, and useful citizen.By a judicious and sucessful
prosecution of mechanical and agricultural labors, he supported
and educated a numerous and respectable family. The civil,
religous, and literary institutions of the Town found in Col. Parkill,
a firm and generous advocate and supporter. He leaves a competantestate,
the fruit of laborious years, uncontaminated by fraud or oppression, to
the use of his bereaved widow, and an inheritance to ten survivingchildren.During
the War of 1812, Col. Parkill commanded a company in our army at Plattsburgh,
and was distinguished as a judicious and energetic officer. His
ease and tact in directing public meetings, pointed him out as the mostsuitable
person to conduct funeral processions, - and for many a year did he
order the sad and solemn march of mourners to the grave; and the present
of a staff was long ago made to him by the principal citizens, as a token
of respect for these acceptable villages services. He
usually shared, and satisfactorily discharged the various important duties
of Town Officers. He was a communicant and Elder of the Presbyterian
Church, and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his Brethern, and the
religous community at large. His health had been gradually declining
for some years, occasioned by a latent disease of the heart. Though
his death was sudden and unexpected, it did not, we trust, find him
unprepared or afraid to die. His end was peace. Thus lived
and died a good parent, a useful citizen, and a devoted and consistent
christian.
