1640; John Phipps witnessed a land grant in James
City Co., VA in 1640. A deed, Robert Holt to Richard Bell dated 10/20/1640,
Chichahominy parish. The name John Phipps appears in Surry and James City
Co., 1650-1661. In 1650 John Phipps or Phyps was granted 1200 acres in the
same county. The Papers of Sir
William Berkeley (1605-1677) Project show Feb. 23, 1656 John Phips (Phyps),
120 acs., James City Co., . . . p. 69, (101), (Patent Book No. 4). . . .
formerly granted unto Dr. Jno. Potts, Sept. 20, 1628 & by Capt. Potts,
heir of sd. Dr. Potts, assigned unto Robert Bristow and by Joane, the relict
of sd. Bristow, assigned unto Edward Prince, who assigned unto William Parry,
who assigned to Sir Wm. Berkeley, & by him assigned unto sd. Phips. .
. . (Nugent I, p. 340) and in 1657 conveyance to John Phips on February 23rd.

1654; Edward Phipps was in Northumberland Co.,
VA in 1654.
About 1677; Henry Phippes m. in St. Mary's Co.,
Maryland, Elizabeth Forrest as her 2nd husband. She was b. about 1654 to Patrick
Forrest and Helena Cheveral and m. 1st Dr. George Dundasse who d. Abt. 31
March 1676, St. Mary's Co., Maryland. Patrick Forrest was transported to
Maryland by Thomas Hatton who became Secretary of the Colony. Patrick was
a solicitor for the Hatton family. Patrick and his wife lived at "Forrest
Lodge", St. George Hundred in St. Mary's Co., Maryland. In 1678 Henry is found
on a jury in St. Mary's Co.
1693-1695; Benjamin Phipps and a Widow Phipps are found neighbors on a NYC, NY tax list. The same or another Benjamin Phipps m. Hannah Dean at Albany, NY in 1693 (not uncommon for early settlers to travel back and forth between Albany and Manhattan). The same or another Benjamin Phipps is involved in the French Indian War in NY and is identified as Captain.
